Yeah I would like to reiterate that this is mostly fluff. Once they release more details on the "Role Warfare" this might change as well. I guess the different units would be more suited to roles than weight classes - Huscarls would be fire support and line troops, Drakdraparna would be the scouts and raiders, and Svinflyking would be the brawlers and line-breakers. But yes I would expect each unit to be mostly self-sufficient.

Example lance from the Svinfylking:
Victor (AC20 or Gauss)
Hunchback (again, AC20)
Hatamoto-Chi (2 PPC, 2 SRM6)
Urbanmech (AC10 or AC20 depending on variant)

Again, spread throughout the weight classes but all with the same basic design purpose - get in close and wreck somebody.

Exactly! Though, of course, that doesn't mean there WON'T be scouts/whatever-other-roles, because everyone needs scouts and whatevers. It will just be a smaller percentage, most likely. Or scouts/others that best support the "get in and wreck som'body".

Hmmmmm, so, where do we stand? It looks like our concept is getting to be pretty solid. Now it's just a matter of figuring out how the heck the system will work next week in the Q&A. Figure out whether it would need to be a merc unit or if it could be a custom faction unit. Also on the todo:
  • Get some more "professional" looking insignias, figure out a camo scheme, make some glorious concept art repaints for propaganda...
  • Come up with a combat ribbon and award system, draft some graphics for those as well. Figure out how we want to award this to people (sponsored by their immediate commander, voted up the chain?). I'm figuring... a ribbon for those initial founders (whoever is in the unit before the game starts, those that helped get things rolling), a ribbon for those involved in a planetary conquest, should we do ones for defense of a planet? I guess this will depend a lot on the contract system as well, we don't wanna have to give out 20 ribbons to a person a week. Figure out some sort of awards like the purple heart, bronze star, medal of honor... All this will give people an alternate "progression" feel since they won't constantly be gaining rank.
  • Mock up a unit dossier in a manner similar to what has been found in the past Merc sourcebooks, for the fun of fluff.
  • Recruit!
I dunno, that's all that comes to mind at the moment, anyone got anything else? :)

Grunt reporting in, if I get the hang of piloting/reading terrain/enemy tactics I may later apply for a Lance Lead spot. But for now just looking to get my feet wet on the line with my enemies blood. Oh and the C-Bills are great too. Merc for life!

Glad to have you flessar, hopefully we can bulk up some more and have a ready unit at game launch.

Dihm, I think until we find out more about how the in-game stuff will actually work I don't a whole lot else to get done. I have zero (0) graphical skills so I can't help much on the insignia or camo/paint schemes. I'll try to work on the awards and maybe some more unit background.

I'll do what I can on tweaking the graphics... too bad Hayden is taking a break from his work. ScrewCityChris' (our web/forum master) wife does graphic work, maybe she can do them for us. :)

It needs to be next Wednesday already.

Well, I'm definitely interested - sign me up! :)

Scouting is definitely a favorite assignment type of mine... after all, my favorite 'Mechs are the Raven and the Beowulf (post-Invasion) which are best-suited for scouting/recon.

I'm hoping the devs give more information on Information Warfare. It would be a big benefit in figuring out the details, and what 'mechs would be able to specialize in that type of role. While the Raven is, of course, ideal for this type of role, it's also almost exclusively a Capellan Confederation design and it would be hard to justify one operating so far from House Liao. Will other 'mech designs be available for this sort of role? That's a question I hope gets answered.

I think I'm going to go ahead and fix the forums to reflect the new name(s). :)

As far as the Raven... that's the part I don't really understand about the whole Scout/Role Warfare deal. In 3050, there weren't a lot of options, equipment-wise, that differentiated a "scout" from anything else. The Guardian ECM, Beagle Probe, etc, were almost non-existent on the available mechs, not to mention that there were "scouts" in every weight class and not all lights were scouts. But, who knows if they'll even limit mech ownership at this point. Maybe being a merc unit would help us in this instance if they do limit things based on faction. :)

I've always been a fan of the "scout" role and mech, but I should probably be in something more like a Cyclops doing "command junk." Woe is me! :)

Okay, so, launching aerospace strike and artillery DOES sound fun.

You could always go with besærkers or beserkers and have the unit made up of people who lost everything to invading forces.

Also I like ormejægerne/ormedræberne or ormjägerne/ormdräparne (wormhunters/wormkillers) better than drakdräberne since it's sort of an insult calling a dragon or anyone really a worm but it also refers to nordic mythology. (Swedish spelling might be wrong since I'm Danish)

Or you could call yourself Jætter/Jötunns/Jotunns/Jotuns who are the adversaries in norse mythology and is translated to giants. Basically representing the dislike of mercs in FRR and that you've become "evil"(mercs) in order to hurt the enemy. But also that mechs are giants.

Age of mythology had Einherjars as a unit and also had a unit called Aesirs wich is the "racial" term for the good gods of norse mythology

Don't feel like you should confine yourself Dihm, I'm more of a fire support/heavy hitter so you can put me in the Cyclops while you run around and see what's what.

Here are some preliminary awards. All are subject to change and more will be added as more info is released:
Bloody Hand Award - for destroying 10 Federated Commonwealth mechs (picture of open hand covered with blood)
Headless Snake Award - for destroying 10 Draconis Combine mechs (picture of kuritan dragon missing head, bloody stump)
Falling Eagle Award – for destroying 10 Free Worlds League mechs (picture of marik eagle upside down)
Broken Katana Award – for destroying 10 Capellan Confederation mechs (picture of capellan crest with katana broken)
Empty Pockets Award - for destroying 10 opposing Mercenary mechs (picture of Atlas holding out empty pockets)
Founding Fathers Award - for unit membership at game launch (silhouette of three Vikings with horn helmets)
Eight-point Compass Award – for fighting battles on 8 different worlds (compass star with eight arrows for points)
Meadhorn Award – given to each lance leader (picture of horn brimming over with alcohol)

I also thought it would be cool to change the background colors on the kill awards based on number of kills (depending on our unit colors), say blue for 10, green for 25, black for 50. Somebody might have a blue Bloody Hand and a black Headless Snake if they fight more on the Kurita front.
Thoughts?

It's supposed to be an insult. :)

What with the bad blood between the FRR and the Draconis Combine and all.

I like where you're head's at, but I think those should be more along the lines of combat ribbons as opposed to "awards". Awards should be for crazy accomplishments. I hate to draw the parallel, but sort of like Battlefield 3 is my thinking on the difference between ribbons and awards and their ease of acquiring. We'll have to have some sort of Clan Invasion ribbons as well... We've got time to figure those out though.

Also... I never understood why the Capellans had a katana on their crest... they're Chinese, shouldn't it be a dao or something? I don't know my Eastern bladed weapons all that well though.

I haven't played BF3 so I didn't know how their stuff is set up. I'll work on ribbons tonite when I get home and see what I can come up with.

I really like the "unofficial" FRR color scheme that Hayden came up with for the Dragon, I'd be all for using that as our unit color pattern.

Something else to think about, since we don't know how contracts will work we may not always get a chance to fight for the FRR. If that's the case then we should just make a statement that'll we fight for anybody but never against the FRR. Gotta pay them bills somehow!

*nods at people reply to his last posts, and to everything that has been said after... mainly as a "I see, ok, interesting, aaah ok" kind of a way of nodding* :)

Dihm + Otheres: I was thinking it probably was a bit of a fluff, and easier to keep track of and all that. And also that in many cases, in the BT IP, Mechs almost never go at it alone, it is almost always combined arms to some extent.

I have this weired mix of both being a compleat "regelryttare" (rules-rider, someone who always follow the rules to the letter) in some cases, and compleatly opposit at other times with not following the rules but rather tampering with them to the way I like them. Which is why I went all "It needs to be this way, because this is what it actually is said to mean!"... to almost instantly switching to "Fair enough, works for me". :D

I don't really fully belive in that whole thing with "a person born under this sign/year/etc is this way" etc. But when it comes to my self... I often feel like the sign of the Gemini is compleatly fitting for me. Because I often feel like there are two "me's" in me. Where in some certain things I compleatly swing between two compleatly opposit ways of possitions. Maybe swinging between them is not the right word to use... it's more that I feel both options are "right" or "wrong" or what ever. Maybe it's the fact that I am pretty good at looking at things from different angles, and looking at things through other peoples eyes so to say. Don't know. :)

Anyway... to other stuff. I do have some skills in graphical stuff. So as such I could maybe help with that.

My problem though is that even though I seem to have an natural ability with the artistic stuff (not music though it seems, mainly hand-crafter/made/created artistic stuff)... I seem to lack a full "imagination" ability. I can't tell you how many times during the last 15+ years where I for example have sat down and felt this... urge... to for example draw something. I can litteraly feel my fingers (and arms to) sort of tingle somehow... but when I sit down and pick up a pen or what ever, looking at the paper... nothing... I am compleatly blank as to what I actually want to draw. Often it just leads to me putting down the pen not having done anything at all, or I start to just draw doodles and symetrical symbols (I love symetry) and lines and what ever else. More so then not, the times I have actually created something has been the few times where I suddenly got imspired to create a certain thing, which was combined with having the "tingly create sensation"... or this suddenly imspiration created the "tingly create sensation". Unfortunatly this has not happend that many times over the years, and it usualy only lasts for X amount of time. I have numbers up on numbers of stuff I started but never finished.

Here below is my most recent example of when I got majorly inspired (I do get some minor inspirations every now and then as well) and did something in photoshop (which actually was a continuation of having been inspired some several years befor which lead me to drawn the original pen drawing that I at this recent time scanned into my computer and then went at it in photoshop). Or actually... this is the "2.0" version of the original paining I did. This one happend like a year later when I finally became sick of the fact that I felt the original painting I did was to... blocky in the colour changes, not smooth enough, and the colouring was not compleatly right either (a bit to red at places, and not pale enough for a vampire, etc). So I reworked it and reworked it and reworked it until I finaly got a result I was actually really happy with.

I guess I should say though that this is my best work so far, none of my previous "work" comes close really. And as such to get this kind of results takes me a long time. In general I am very slow, and extreamly meticulous, when I draw and paint (probably my biggest downfall with drawing and painting... ruined a large numbers of stuff due to constantly tampering with them wanting them to be "perfect")... or do anything for that matter... which my posts in general should indicate.

Posted Image

Here is the "1.0" version of the image above.

Here is the image of the original drawing that I had drawn several years earlier. One of the few times where I delibratly drew it somewhat "not perfect"... and managed to stay away from tampering with it to much.

All these images are not the original size of the images though, the originals are double the size. But photobucket has a file size limit... plus I feel it's probably best if I keep the originals to my self, for the purpose of "proff" that I am the one who painted them. Not that I think I would ever really need to "defend my work" or anything, from people using it without my knowledge or claiming it's theirs or something... there are other stuff out there that is much beter and proffessional and "life like" for anyone to do that to with my stuff. :)

My original inspiration for that drawing was Vampires, when I rewatched "Interview With The Vampire" some several years ago... I have actually liked Vampires much longer then I have Mech's, I saw "Bram Stokers: Dracula" (the 1992 movie) back in 93-94'ish which made me go "ooh... cool". And then I saw "Interview With The Vampire" (1994 movie) the first time in roughly 95. The first time I saw anything at all with MechWarrior was the "BattleTech: The Animated Series" that I saw in late 95 or early 96. And it was a year or two later that I found the connection between the cartoon and MW. And not untill very late 90's that I realizing that the BT figure game existed, and finally the MW PnP RPG one (which is probably the one I wanted to play the most, combined with a BT figures), but none of my RPG friends where really interested in it. Vampires are my favorit supernatural/unatural monsters/beings/creatures... atleast the iteration where they don't actually just becomes mindless/instinctual "monsters", but rather retain all that which is human... just enhancing it. In the stuff that I like a Vampires nails tend to change, grow thicker, and become more claw-like. So I held up my left hand, looked at it, started to make "claw-like" movements with it, to find what would look like the best angles for the fingers in the sence of the arm being lifted up and the fingers of the hand on it's way to curl out for an attack, started drawing it, and of course I added the "vampire nails" to it... I don't have nails like that... clearly... :)

On another note... I really liked what Skarr said... especialy the part about "Jägare" ("Hunter"). For a scout unit, quick moving, lightning strikes in and out and all that, "Hunter" seems more fitting then "Slayer". "Drakjägare" sounds like the people who try and find them, hunts them, really knows their behaviour and all that, and eventually possibly kill them. Granted, a "Drakdräpare" would probably also know the whole process... but name-wise it only really focus on the end part, not all the stuff that lead up to that part.

Maybe if the Merc unit was named "Drakdräpare", and each company in it had specific names based on their main work. So scout unit would be "Drakjägare"... and then something other "Drak*********" for the other types of units based on what they do. But, then of course this mer unit would be extreamly centered around just going at Kurita... and that might maybe be a bit to narrow.

As a final note, about the whole thing with what you said Dihm. About why the units where devided they are etc. Part of the reason why I really wondered about it, and what ever... is that gameplay wise with MW, I have never fully defined my role in it. I tend to play these games the way I at the time feel like playing them. I don't tend to stick to a defined role for a class... or stick with a class all together for that matter. With the example of the Hollander in MWLL I mentioned. That is clearly a mid-longranged to longranged mech, it's supposed to stay away from the enemy and sort of snipe at it. And I did do play that way... combined with rushing the enemy... running around it... sometimes standing still and you name it (parts of the reason I got close to enemies was due to easier to hit at times).

So when I look at the 3 current proposed company's, and their fluff parts and what not, I don't actually see one that I could actually fit into. Maybe it would technicly not matter gameplay wise really, that I could play a light mech in the brawler company and what not. But fluffwise I would not fit the molds (I think, I might be wrong)... and to me, fluff is very importent, I want the fluff to be just right.

I think I am a little bit too unpredictable gameplay wise with how I play at any given time in MW games. Especialy in the sence of being part of a unit like so many of you probably have with MW online gaming. Usualy you need to act a certin way, follow orders, teamwork and all that. And I can do all that... it's just that I am SO used to being a solo gamer, it probably more so an natural instinct to be a solo gamer. And as such my natural instinct is to do what at the moment feels right... which could mean taking my light mech right into the middle of 5 heavy and assaults mechs where I clearly am outgunned (multiple times over), especialy since it's almost impossible to outmanuver 5 other mechs at the same time, even if they are slow. :P It's hard to break almost 20 years of natural (solo-centric) instincts you know. :D

To follow that up you may find that with the way the game plays your tactics or preferred role may change as well so it might be worth waiting until you've played the game for a while before you try to fit yourself into a role. Remember also, the Huscarls are a more "generic" unit that would have more flexibility and less specialization so that might be somewhere to start at least until you find the niche you like in the game. Personally I like to stand off a bit and snipe or add fire support but I also like to wade in even when I might be outgunned (like the classic saying, if you don't know what you're supposed to do then charge!). I would probably fit in with the Svinfylking, helping cover the brawlers while they close in for the kill. But again depending on the game mechanics and controls I might want to be the guy with the AC20 that runs right up in there and busts heads.

I love the idea of campaign ribbons. One issue I can see though, is how to represent Light 'Mechs that are better-geared toward recon (like the Raven) - Recon 'Mechs don't usually carry enough firepower to bring down another 'Mech by itself. I'm hesitant to make any suggestions until we know more about Information Warfare. One suggestion I'd like to make is to add a ribbon for action against Periphery forces. Maybe a skull speared on a knife. Another suggestion is to keep the background the same for all commendations, but add bars or some identifier showing grades of achievement - a bronze star added for 10 'Mechs, a silver star added for 20, a gold star added for 30, and diamond star added for all kills above 40.

Indeed. I did think about the Huscarls there a bit, that they did seem like the more flexibal part. As for Svinfylking, I thought they where the brawlers.... or wait... a portion of it is the brawlers, and the rest are ranged that cover their bakcs and what not... right yeah, I seem to recal that now. So... never mind... :P None the less, what ever I play in MWO, or any other game of any other genre for that matter, the type of weapondry I use, out of that type I tend to always go for the heavy hitting type. So I have no problem with ripping out all the small or medium lasers (or other smaller weapons) in a, for example, light mech, and dump an ERPPC on it or something.

In games where there is for example a choice between AoE (exploding stuff for example), DoT (t.ex fire), or single hit high damage weaponry (like a rifle shot)... I will always go for the single hit heavy damage type of weapons (even if it takes longer to use, or does less damage over time then other types). Simply put, I LOVE seeing the big numbers. I would rather see one big massive "100" text from one enemy, then "20+20+20+20+20+20" of a DoT on the same one (yes that's 120, DoT's usualy do more combined damage), or a big sea of "25's" pop up having hit multiple enemies with an AoE (although this is my second favorit, especialy if it's combined with a semi big number).

I like these suggestions. Being called a "Drakjägare" for being a scout is definitely cool.

*nods* In Sweden, two of our main "elite" units in the military are called "Kustjägarna" ("The Coast/Coastal Hunters", simmilar to USA's Navy SEAL's), and "Fallskärmsjägarna" ("The Parachute Hunters", simmilar to the British SAS). Mostly though, the "Jägarna" part is translated to "Ranger" in English... so my translations are just the litteral versions, because normaly it would be "Coustal Rangers" and "Parachute Rangers" in English.

Anyway, these units do sort of the same type of work, the only difference I guess being how they are mostly deployed (by sea/water, or by air). They are both supposed to be highly mobile and flexible units operating behind enemy lines, often for extended periods of time. Their work is basicly a combination of reconnaissance and general intelligence gathering. But are also ment to be able to perform raids, sabotage, and whet ever else is needed.

So in that sence, using "Jägare" would make sence for a company who's main work is scouting and behind the line work.

On sea, a certain class of military ships are called "Jagare" (note that the A is supposed to be without the two dots here. The base word for "Jägare", and "Jagare" etc, is "Jakt" ("Hunt", as in "it's a hunt" or "to hunt" or "hunting" or "chase" and simmilar), and depending on what you refer to, it can change between either A or Ä, most nomral is Ä, and "jakt" it's self is never writen with an Ä though). Anyway, this ship class in english is refered to as a "Destroyer". This type is supposed to be fast, mobile, and have a long endurence. So in MW sence it guess it would be the upper level of Mech tonnage for Scouts, maybe medium and some heavy mechs.

In the Swedish airforce, there is a certain saying of something being a "Jakt, Attack, Spaning". Which means "Hunt, Attack, Reconnaissance/Surveillance". This is partly to indicate that something has a multiroled purpous. Like the "Saab JAS 39 Gripen" ("Gripen" means "Griffin" or "The Griffin". Also, Saab is not always said when refering to it... and yes... Saab is also a aircraft manufacurer... in fact, they started as an aircraft manufacturer, still are. They build, as far as I know, almost all of Swedens military aircrafts). "JAS" in this case is the abbreviation of "Jakt, Attack, Spaning". Gripen, together with Draken ("the Dragon"... actually, I have forgoten, "Drake" is also what in Sweden we use as the name for a "Kite"), and Viggen (means "the Thunderbolt") are my three favorit Swedish military aircrafts. Draken a lot more then the others though, it looks cooler. Actually, Draken is one of my favorit aircrafts/fighters ever, if not the favorit. It's look is so, striking, and unique, compared to most things out there. I think that's sort of why I also like the F-14 (another one of my most favorit), especialy when it's wings are layed back. Draken is one of the aircrafts that can do the "Pugachev's Cobra" manouver, which in it's self is impressive seeing as it's from the mid 50's (compared to the others I know of, which are usualy no older then the 70's and forward).

Anyway. So yeah... to get back on track... consider using "Jägare/Jägarna" somewhere. :)

Edit: Here is a really old image of a pair of Drakar. Not often you see something looking that cool in original black and white photos. ;)

Okay, I'm convinced on changing it from Drakdraparna to Drakjägare. It fits much better and sounds just as/more awesome. :D

And don't worry Grimm, no matter your playstyle (even if it changes from day to day), they'll be a place for you to fit in. I wouldn't expect people to only play one way ALL the time. They'd burn out and lose interest. People need to have the freedom to mess about and try new things, we don't want to do anything to stifle that. Oh, and damn nice job on the shading btw! If you wanna give a shot at making the unit insignias look better, go for it! You don't have to start from scratch! My problem with art is that I have all these amazing ideas in my head, and I can picture them perfectly, but my hands can never make it happen the way I see it so I get pissed off and give up. :)

As far as camo/parade colors: The only issue I have with using what Hayden did is that that was a conjectural scheme for an official FRR unit. Which, technically, we aren't any more, even if we are fanatically loyal. ;) Not that we CAN'T, but should we? Maybe we could do some derivation of it? Use it as a template, but change it enough so we are distinct?

Hiring for others than the FRR: I'd say, fluff-wise, hiring on with Steiner would be the alternative. Being ex-pats prior to the liberation, I figure we would have hired on with them to do border raids into the Rasalhague Military District. Never attacking anything but military targets of course. Or Davion, if we still wanted to attack the Combine but not run the risk of hurting any true Rasalhagians back in the day. Or hell, both are an option. Game-wise they'll probably have enough people, they're always overplayed. :D

I've gone ahead and gotten the forums rejiggered, mostly. Working on putting up a temporary unit graphic for the header. For those of you that haven't, if you're interested, go over and sign up/apply so I can give you member access and you can tell me all the things to fix with the site/layout. :P

With regards to colors you can always do it the easy way and simply search for danish/swedish/norwegian military uniforms and pick one of them.

I'm a big fan of the Norway air force roundel. ;)

Oh, and Grimm! We got another person from Sweden who applied, Aspius! You should put in an "application" too. :)

Ok I found a list of the BF3 ribbons with pictures so I'll work on those as I get time.

Colors: I like a dark blue with grey or gunmetal, or maybe a dark blue and white. We can make up a template later on for the pattern but I'd like to be able to use unit colors for some of the ribbons so that's why I'm wanting to get those figured out.

Contracts: Again, I was thinking mostly about what we would be doing if there weren't FRR contracts available. Since we don't know how the contract system works yet it may be a moot point. I agree that Steiner would be 2nd on the hire list and Davion 3rd.

I'll get set up on the other forum shortly. For some reason my internet here at work has been f'd up but now I'm back on track.
