Most of the salt comes from people getting Narced, then lurmed.

Or maybe it's because I could not possibly care less about the opinion of some overexcited anonymous internet denizen who's getting his frilly panties in a bunch because of my performance. So I just forget about those incidents before the next match starts. If nothing else spending a decade and a half in various positions in customer service _does_ teach you not to give a crap and tends to provide a person with skin of elephant-like thickness when it comes to being insulted.

As i stated earlier. not everyone are jerks all the time. A lot just get fed up and pop. But they don't do it all the time. There, I believe, are very few who are abusive all the time.

If the bad player is actually trying to improve and is listening, I don't think many people can rage at them. It's the consistent bads that refuse to improve that grinds everyone's gears, I think. Are you improving? If you are, then learn from your mistakes and move on. It's pretty sweet once you get past the 'bad x pilot' stage.
You will, however, run into plenty of references to a particularly starchy yellow tuber. Particularly in the forums. Direct insults are generally rare in this game.

Heavies and mediums are what people should play when learning the game. These can make a match easier or a little tougher, but they rarely sway the outcome like an assault.
The problem is a lot of new players get in an assault mech and then play however without doing any research or considering how well they are playing. Some start off by rushing into combat and dying quickly which results in low damage. Then they build long range sniper builds and get yelled at for not getting engaged. Assaults should really have the ability to do some damage at range and the bulk of their damage from 500m and closer. They need to be in the thick of the fight but with support and with some terrain they can use to shield as they cool down.
There is no perfect build, but there are a lot of bad builds. Was in a match yesterday with a Catapult that was pure LRMs. He hung back the entire fight, complained because people weren't providing him locks (in river city fighting around the citadel), and then wouldn't close in when he was one of three mechs left. He had the most armor but refused to help out. When called on his build he said he laughed at people who pointed out his stupidity and proceeded to call everyone who disagreed a noob.
Which leads to a lot of frustration when you can see where a few small changes turned a good match into a crappy loss. When you see people bragging about playing poorly. When someone is trying to learn the game but refuses to listen to advice.
All of which means there are times when people get harsh on coms because it's the fourth match in a row where the team player poorly. We all want to win, and when we can't win we want to at least lose in a good fight. Too many steam rolls, too many poor decisions, and the frustration slips out.
Usually at that point I try to switch to typing to help me calm down and so those still alive can coordinate on coms. I still get to vent but it's easy to ignore and I'm not making the situation worse.

Aside from the obvious, this is great example of why the PSR should probably be adhered to more closely. Usually, whenever I see people raging in game, it is typically a '1-2' tier player raging at a '5-3' tier player. The 'better' tiers get frustrated because they see the others doing something that is blatantly counterproductive to the team's success.
Unfortunately, much of the reward you receive in-game, post-match, is almost entirely dependent on you winning or losing the match. Because MWO is such a team-oriented game, other people will get pissed when they see a potato ruining their own chances at getting paid more in the form PSR, C-bills, and XP - i.e. one person cannot carry a team to victory, aside from maybe a light mech capping points in conquest, no matter how much a try-hard claims they are 'carrying'. Because of this dependence on other people, you should expect some flames & salt from time to time....
I have to say, while I don't think I've ever vocally raged at someone in-game, I do from time to time become a pretty critical backseat driver - i.e. spectating someone that happens to not be that good and then ******** on them for doing stupid stuff such as: 3x zoomed during a brawl, shooting the enemy's healthy arms instead on the cherry-red center torso, not seeing enemies that are right in front of their face, fighting with an enemy (or enemies) without painting the targets so that the rest of the team doesn't know where the targets are, etc. etc. etc. etc.
I have, however, been on the receiving end of backseat driving (WHY YOU CYCLING YOUR FIRE BRO? DAT PIN POINT!!!!ONE!!!!11!) - I usually just respond with "okay dead guy thanks for the advice". That usually shuts them up

Also, the play of the assault mechs has a HUGE effect on the likelihood of winning the match. I have been pretty pissed at assaults for sitting at spawn, for not reason other than potato, and definitely let them know about it. Unfortunately, there is a higher burden of responsibility that comes with being an assault pilot given your ability to dish out extreme firepower, and the monumental effect that can have on the outcome of the match. While lights & meds may have a low amount of armor, Assaults are far-and-away the hardest weight class to effectively pilot, in my opinion at least.

Summs it up pretty well.
I also make stupid mistakes sometimes, and I get mad at myself for these mistakes too.
But as Yanlowen said, it's people who try to play MWO like a single player game with NPC-teammates, players who obviously are overwhelmed by the number of things they should be doing and noticing at the same time, and the guys using advanced zoom in a short range engagement, who make you want to

The bottom line in QP is that Charlie lance needs to get shot at by the enemy. If you are in Charlie lance and are nearly fresh at the end (unless your team just stomps) you are doing it wrong. The pilots in alpha and bravo lance are much lighter and have less armor to spend for the team. When they die, you will die about 30 sec later...fresh or not. 5 on 1 battles only end one way when you are an assault...even at 100% health.
If you are the last alive in an assault, enough to get raged in more than a few occasions...it's probably your builds and/or play-style. We were all new once and each pilot here has done dumb things, etc. Learning from the better pilots calling you out can be helpful to better play. Not excusing abuse or anything...just sometimes the frustration expressed by other pilots is something to be learned from....assuming one wants to get better.

That doesn't excuse being an *** to someone though. I know when I'm salty I try to stay nice, or at least passive aggressive. Constructive criticism instead of insults.

I need to add onto this, that, at least from me, calling someone a potato is less an insult, and more a badge of "Yeah, you're just like me". Aka, you're not very good at the game, but hey, as long as you don't act like you're a god among men, or complain about something with multitudes of easy counters (LRMs), we'll get along.

In general, I hear raging at other people more often, say about once an hour or two so 1 out of 5-10 drops. still not too bad.
Note by 'raging' I am broadly taking in anything like "um.. dude you using a joystick, har har" all the way up to curse laden rants of 'uninstall, go play pokemon, noob!'
How I handle. In the early days I would take the bait and snipe back at them, even got into an argument on two occasions. Nowadays, I just chuckle and keep to my game and pretty much ignore the personal jabs. Best fun is when our group is on our private TS.. oh if only the rager could hear the laughs and fun we get at their expense.

The only time I'll tend to hit comms is if someone is griefing another player for no good reason.. example would be the old famous last mech is a light and they are actively trying to scratch out a win but those impatient 'but muh next drop is delayed!' types are yelling at them to just go die. I detest stuff like that and our group will usually tell them to stay calm, keep playing their game and have fun and basically ignore the griefer or talk over them.

This. Assaults tend to make or break games. Right now I am trying to gain XP for my CERPPC Mist Lynx in preparation for the new skill tree, and it is really frustrating when I put out 300-600+ damage in a game and we still lose, only to see on the score screen that no one in Charlie Lance scored higher damage than a Mist Lynx with a single CERPPC. I have been getting pretty good at keeping myself in check, though.
