Not true. The matchmaker as it is currently set up allows a max tier difference of 2. That means that a T5 can be matched with T5, T4 and T3s. A T3 can be matched with all tiers. A T1 can be matched with T1, T2 and T3s. A T2 can be matched with T1, T2, T3 and T4s.

Ok I am Tier 4 now but when I was a T5 I have frequently been matched up with Tier 1 in off peak hours, even in peak hours in the US you can be matched up with higher tier player. Go look on the leader board, For this season there are only 16000 players that have played 10 games a few seasons ago it was no more than 27K. across the world.

I have even had matches where tier 1 players have actually complained about the fact that it can not be fair to do this as it is neither enjoyable for them or the player being stomped. Some high tier player actually take charge one guy did so in such a humorous manner i wish I had recorded it. but in the main people just grin and bear it.

So sorry to break it to you whilst the aim of the matchmaker is to make sure that you only play someone no more than 2 tiers if it cannot do it it will put you the next available game,

I am looking forward to the update. Would have preferred seeing the final fix in PTS first, just to tinker some more. But I imagine there will be further refinements after released in Live and more players really dive in.

It is amazing all the different views on it though. I for one tested most of my favored mechs and didn't see anything that really concerned me once they fixed the Deceleration issues. A lot of mechs felt like they came out better to me. Course, its all on how you build out the tree. And glad they are adding more to the UI to make the skills you chose to standout more.

I am also not worried too much about skilling all the mechs I have. I think I am around 150+. I will skill out the ones I run the most and deal with any others as needed. I mean, if you truly run through all your mechs still and you have a ton of them, more power to you. I have mechs I have probably not touched for over a year or 2...I really should sell a bunch off. Something just won't let me.

How else are we supposed to help? Several issues with the skill tree as presented on the PTS are being pointed out, over and over again, by different people. Some were addressed, most were not. What else can / should we do? Shut up and enjoy being screwed?

I'm not saying it will work the way PGI expects it to, I'm saying that every FTP game is designed to be very grindy to play on your impatience. This is to help motivate you to spend real money on the game. The module system was a cbill sink with this exact purpose in mind. If you thought PGI was going to replace this without instituting some form of cbill sink to replace it.... well welcome to the real world where things cost money and PGI needs to make money to stay in business. You can flame PGI for this all you want and stop spending money on MWO and walk away, what ever you choose to do, it's your money and your time. But that won't change the fact that as a business decision, this is in line with the FTP model.

I agree with this sentiment. My view is that the game should not be FTP. because it gives a false impression, I spend money on mechs and spend money on MC and I use that MC to avaoid grind since I play at the most 10 hours a week.

The problem I hear however is that the people whom they are hurting at the moment are the people that have basically paying by buy Mech packs every month. Now I understand both sides of the argument regarding those people with hundreds of mechs but in fairness, they have been paying for PGI salaries so I would have thought they would have had more consideration for them. For me I will still be playing it will take me ages to work out what will be best for the my top 5 mechs that I play now to find out a decent build and the those that I play less I most probably will play even less since there is no incentive to spend money in optimising only to find that this is not optimal and the cost of respecing is high or else we will all just do cookie cutter skill trees (so much for variety)

Now don't get me wrong I like the idea of the skill tree. i think that 330+ nodes and choosing 90 of them is not going to be easy for the vets let alone a beginner and there is no place to trial it out to make sure you spent you point wisely especially again for a beginner

Lastly I managed but 4 games on all the PTS iterations. I ended up playing in the academy battlezone for much of my testing
and in the main the reality is the gains over an unmastered mech is not earth shattering. Some would take a lot of work to notice and against the live server there is a clear cooldown nerf bat going on in some areas the skill tree is an enhancement but I believe they could have made many of the changes in the live server. it also surprises me that there is no reward for playing the PTS there was so little traffic there it is hard to say that we a wide selection of player views and skill levels

Out of genuine curiosity, could you please explain how you see them squeezing more money from players? I can't quite figure out what they would be spending money on.

especially given all you'd really need to spend on the skill tree is your time, and an easy-to-get ingame currency. not really that much of a biggy.

I find it hilarious with the guys saying their mechs are "unusable" without a maxed tree, too. Weapons still do damage, and the skill tree doesn't have anything to do with fitting ability either (apart from that node that increases ammo per ton). hell, if anything, practice with a Mech that hasn't been fully maxed out will actually improve someone's piloting skill as well as helping pimp it out in the long run.

Yay, finally the all new skill tree mini game arrives! Everybody needs it, everybody wants it! Now we can click these nodes all night long! At Least, as long as we have XP or GXP, MXP, YXP or whatever and C-Bills or MC or whatever.

But I'm afraid a lot of customers will run out of patience.

And who knows, maybe it is more fun than actually playing the game? I'm gonna try it for sure. But I won't spend any more (real) bucks on your product.

But, TBH, I'm still baffled, how you guys managed it to come up with such a underwhelming piece of game-mechanics. KUDOS!

* I will, sensibly, start with mechs that I use the most, and slowly upgrade accordingly from there.
* There is a huge chunk of my garage that simply sits there.
* this isn't a pokemon game,
* if I ever feel the need to stick badges on the mechs collecting dust, I'll just play the mechs that I actually enjoy using to get the c-bills to upgrade those dust bunny collectors.
* cheap access to module abilities like radar deprivation and seismic senor (1.56 million to max out that tree, only 480 thousand to get 1 node of each compared to 12 million for the pair currently).
* Helping prevent a huge gap between advanced and green players alike is a huge benefit for the game as a whole
* gaining role customization,
* decreasing the c-bill gap for old module abilities,
* decrease mastery costs for players with small stables by removing the rule of 3, and
* PGI is examin(ing) mobility based on not only mech size but address those mechs who are known for mobility.

To sum it up briefly, there are growing pains here, but it looks to be for the better of the game and community as a whole.

Bullet pointed to make the point.
Well done, SuperFunkTron.

PGI: Thank you for giving us the chance to look into the system and provide feedback. Openness like that allows the reasonable voices provide input for adjustments to the system, and helps people be more prepared for the changes coming. I'm sure you're aware that for every enraged person out there, there's several more that are silently accepting whatever changes you make, because:
a. They recognize this is a game they play as a hobby.
b. They recognize they do not own PGI and do not have fan entitlement issues.
c. Lives do not actually depend on this.
d. They do not want to get attacked by the vocal minority
e. They just want to blow up giant robots

My own immediate circle of MWO players have not had time to review the system in detail. I've been lucky enough to share some of the details with them and answer questions (as best I can). Most folks seem open and upbeat to the changes and look forward to the refund and tuning their mechs more towards what they want.

I honestly think that the skill tree is an improvement for the game. I'm just more than a little angry that I will not have the cbills to spend the xp ive earned. My concerns have been ignored. Oh well, at least I'll save money not buying any mech bays or mech packs.

Honestly, from a business standpoint, this system is a game killer. I'm thinking mech sales can do nothing but drop as players spend more time on mechs they have instead of buying new mechs and mech bays. Perhaps they figure that they will make that up with increased consumable purchases...I'm thinking not....Most players don't spend their consumables every match and they are all available for cbills. I hope I'm wrong. I still like this game, but I won't be spending so much as another dollar on it.

It's a Free-to-play game anyways. vast majority of the cash they're getting is either from Mech Packs or MC bought to open supply caches or to nab Heroes, none of which really has anything to do with the Skill tree. The Game's not going to die, it's just going to weed out lazy impatient types who want an I-win button.

@Kem: the funny thing is how stupidly wrong and assuming that video is. it's not even clever like some of the other "Reacts" vids Posted Image mean, hell, the last one about MWO was at least 30 times better, because it wasn't specifically aimed at soothing the egos of Salty whiners.

Really? That is your take on all of this? So for those of us that have years of game play in and large stables of mechs are the lazy impatient types? There is no way I will be able to spec out even half my mech stable b/c of the cost of upgrades. 1/2 of my mech will instantly be rendered un-mastered and unplayable. I'm not module rich, so no big refund there. Now I will have to grind for months to earn enough to get back to where I started from and in the mean time, not be able to buy new mechs.

The cost is too still too high.

And all they should have done is for every mastered mech to reimburse the XP and C-Bills cost of those 91 points. or at least, I don't know, 60 points. Just for people not to lose what they already had.

Quintus, I've been playing since Closed Beta, So has most of my unit, and we adapt. we don't cry about change. You only consider your mechs "unplayable" because you assume apparently that an Unskilled mech's weapons don't deal damage, or that it couldn't dodge weapons fire, or, you know.. have armor.

Also... honestly... how many of those mechs do you actually USE? I own over a hundred myself, but there's really only about a fifth of that i actually use semi-constantly, and I'm already storing up xp on them, so it's not really gonna be a problem. i mean, hell, due to the amount of time i've spent in a Centurion, i've been racking up some decent play in a Basiced Victor, and it's competing just fine against mechs i KNOW the enemy pilot has mastered.

@David: You do know the new Skill Tree is essentially a mix of both Modules and the old skills too, right... and honestly.. the Modules were really where you got nailed, given most cost more than some IS Heavies.

I think the iterations on the test server did help to correct the biggest concerns of the community. Tuning and honing of the skill tree has yet to happen. If PGI decides to do this on the live servers instead on the test servers - where they would need to put some incentive to play on it more excessively - I am okay with it. Just think of the live servers as test servers where you get C-Bills and XP! Posted Image

The new skill tree allready is more awesome as the old tree/module system because we no longer will be looking for modules! Posted Image To all people who have bought new modules for every mech live will become way cheaper!

Also I rejoice we got rid of the terror rule of three which was borked beyond repair even within itself concerning chassis-/weightclass tripplet mechs to get elite/master! Posted Image

I do also have a ton of mechs but never would or will use all of them. To be honest the old skill system did impede new players AND gave to little long time motivation/goals for hardcore fans of one chassis. (In world of tanks I always enjoyed getting my tank crews that extra 1% better in the 5th skill after sometimes dozens and dozens of battles it kind of felt like an achievement.) So I really dont mind that we can sink some more time in one mech now. Posted Image

I also wholeheartly welcome PGIs initiative to counterbalance weaponboating. I could even imagine a weapon-synergy system where there will bonuses for combining long range and short range weapon systems. Posted Image

Have a look at this informative video about the cost comparison from Kanajashi:

So all in all I think PGI is moving in the right direction and I am looking forward to see how the new system will play and develop on the live servers.

@Ryoken: honestly, losing the rule of three is a biggy for me too, since it'll let PGI add in those mechs that only ever had one or two variants.. hell, said mechs would probably also get cheaper mechpacks because of that too.

Rest in Peace Mechwarrrior Online. Go to hell ClannerCareBear Online.

PGI why not simply remove all the IS mechs since your nerfing them INTO THE GROUND. IS lose most of thier quirks while the clanners keep theirs, that's unfair and completely destroys the fragile IS-Clan balance we had. Once this goes live you should reimburse all players with IS mechs so we can buy the mechs your forcing us to, the uninspired Clan mechs with the same load out for all of them.

P.S. To read someone post that they actually still somehow believe that their "Mastered" Mechs will not get a XP refund is just so f'ing brutal... I really feel for the lads at PGI. Dude, do you even play the game? You're not even testing out the changes yourself, and you expect other people to take you seriously?

Stop preaching about things you aren't even involved with and stop being a complete hypocrite.
