So, I can't believe nobody is thinking about this..

Come the new equipment, both sides are getting laser AMS... which means that just about any mech with an AMS slot, or even an energy slot (to be seen) will mount a LAMS.

This makes anything below LRM15 or even LRM20 non-viable..

Maybe it's time to completely redesign those LRMs.

I mean, it was time to do it 4 years ago, but... better late than never.

Not only can i drive mechs to cover with my lurms but is also can now shut em down (or at least cost them a potion of their heat reducing their DMG).

So lets wait for the impact of the LAMS before we change lurms.

No, they will not be made worse.. but countering them will become more common.. so yeah.. even harder to use them effectively..

LAMS will be uncommon if the heat it generates is significant enough.

You're forgetting the downside to the LAMS. If your LAMS equipped mech is constantly firing away the heat generation may be enough to put your mech over a threshold to where you can't fire your weapons as needed because the max heat has been reached. So... you'll need to power down the LAMS if your own arse isnt getting handed to you.

The concern is valid, but I think PGI has tested the LAMS enough to know the downside and I'm guessing that to be heat generation. If it is a no brainer that the AMS gets left behind time and time again for the LAMS... then let PGI adjust what they can.

The sky isn't falling... yet. ;)

@ OP

Send in a long stream of LRM 5's the entire enemy's LAMS begins to fire.... the LRM's keep coming as the enemies heat slowly rises until they are close to popping their corks. Your team walks in to the overheating enemy and roshambos the other team.

Aren't you missing more information about LAMS to make any claim? What is the range of LAMS vs AMS, what is the damage/missle kill rate, how much heat (will someone be able to overheat my mech by firing enough missles)?

The heat penalties need to be massive. For turning them on, give it a standing heat penalty, and then exponential heat when they are swatting missiles. Active heat should mean you cannot Lolpha with laservomit at all.

But since we know nothing, all this is massive conjecture.

I never got the Lurm-whining in either direction:

If the lurmer just hangs back, doing nothing but ignorantly clicking red target clamps (and most probably fire all his ammo into terrain), then LRMs suck.
If the target is a fool and gets lurmed to death in the open, then they "appear" to be OP like hell. But the error is on the fools's side, of course.

If you use them wisely, with terrain awareness, maybe even with teamplay and/or as a secondary weapon, proving additional fire support or at least pressing enemies into cover, then they are a TACTICALLY very useful weapon. They punish tactical mistakes like running out in the open.

If you know how to play, they are hardly a threat. With the occasional exception of "Damn, I deserved to get lurmed for my mistake" or "Damn, I'll have to cross that open terrain now against the lurmers. Well played, reds" situations.

Are they an easy mode one-click-win weapon for the lazy-*** noob? No.
Are they an uber-brawling weapon for the local wannabe hero? No.
They are a TACTICAL weapon and if you use them correctly, they are (like any weapon) both powerful and still balanced.

As far as LAMS is concerned:
We'll have to see how it will turn out.
- How fast and strong can it shoot down stuff?
- At which range?
- For which heat?

Depending on those variables, it can be anywhere between "lol, crap" and "RIP any and all missiles".

Anyone who doesn't have the exact stats and did some serious testing can't say anything about where it will end up.

Anything else is pure spite and nothing else.

It's the same tonnage, and 1 slot smaller, than taking AMS+ ammo right now...so I'm still not going to need it for a variety of reasons, unless ATMs are overwhelming

Assuming they both get 0.5H/s, they need just under 4 PoorDubs (0.6H/s) or 3 TrueDubs to eliminate their heat generation

Or, a quarter to a fifth of your average robots cooling capacity.
Enough for me to not consider it for that reason in itself.

I wouldn't worry about it. People will still rather take that one extra ton of ammo than fit ams.

By the way, I am assuming that L-AMS will not be a unique hard point. That is to say any mech with an AMS point can take L-AMS right?

Oh, that one made me laugh.. when has PGI EVER tested anything enough?

I could go on ranting about this, but.. back on topic..

Even with the increased heat, ballistic boats will not feel it much, and I don't think that the LAMS heat increase will make it non-viable.

For me, the reason why NONE of my mechs have ever fielded AMS is the extra weight needed for ammo.. I would rather take LRM or AC ammo than AMS ammo..

And then ammo runs out..

And you're stuck with uselessly spent tonnage..

LAMS does not use ammo.. and as a mech pilot who is always on the verge of overheating (and often does, but more and more by choice of blaze of glory), trust me.. even if it used as much heat as a small or even a medium laser.. it won't be that significant..

And more pilots will chose it in their loadouts.. which means more of them on the field.. which means.. something's gotta give.
