Not sure about other countries, but in the US, you do NOT have any right not to be offended.
Offensive language that doesn't rise to the level of threat or hate speech is just that, offensive language.
You can only be hurt or offended by that which you give the power to hurt or offend.

This is a Canadian game not saying "hi" when you enter the game can get you banned from the office xmas i mean "holiday" party.

I think there is a fine line between using strong words and trying to hurt other people with words.

Just swearing because you got oneshot is just some emotions breaking out. Most people can understand that and won't be hurt, even if the reaction is over the top.
Beeing agressive against someone for no obviouse reason is what makes the problems. Like when I get yelled at for using "strange" builds.

Some people go with "Gosh thats just stupid"..I can except that, no problem.
People that start to talk me down in chat or VoiP on how I should play and then get unfriendly when I don't react, thats where it first starts to become annoying till the point is reached that I feel like shooting that person....what I do sometimes...even teammates.

That is what language can do. Its not the words used but the context that can "hurt peoples feelings".

So should people watch what they say ingame? Yes. Nothing against swearing a little from time to time but don't preach your godlike wisdome to people and then get agressive about it.

Racism is one thing, but to try and censor every little thing that people find offensive is ridiculous. If you are that sensitive maybe turn off voip and disable chat.

Devil's advocate time.
A fair number of players Stream this game on Twitch and Youtube, and often have to tag their stream as mature / adult language. Why? The streamers themselves might have a pristine reputation and keep things clean, but if they engage in the game's VOIP to coordinate with team mates, that ends up on the stream as well - meaning that's the 'Adult' portion that has to be tagged.

GG.

Several times this weekend I've had enemies type homophobic and homosexual-related insults over chat. I've also heard two racial comments over voip during my time playing MWO. I reported all these people for chat abuse and voip abuse, and will report any comment that sounds racist or discriminatory.

I honestly hope PGI bans these players from the game. It is, after all, 2017. Still thinking its acceptable or funny to call someone ''f*****' or to use 'gay' as a suitable synonym for 'inadequate' or 'disappointing' is ridiculous. We need to evolve past this kind of ''I was just making a joke so its okay to say these things'' mentality. People who insist on using these terms are (at minimum) 20 years behind the times.

On a more positive note, 5 incidents in the 13 months I've been playing isn't that bad. Thank you to the 99.99% of you who keep this game clean and classy. I'm grateful our community is mature enough to make these kinds of immature behaviors a rarity.

Thanks for reading! I look forward to playing with any and all respectful players, regardless of age, self-identified gender, sexual orientation, nationality, religion, culture, etc.

You forget that the entire internet is a safe space for bigoted man-children who cry the moment someone tells them they are being an offensive a**hat.

But good luck on your crusade. I wish you well :)

Another lame brain, fallacy. "You are incapable of empathy because my experiences are special." No, they are in fact not. You have no idea at all what I am capable of understanding and not understanding. You vastly underestimate what people are capable of understanding. You also have no idea of what I've actually experienced or haven't experienced. I happily mute people who I don't wish to listen to on VOIP and chat. Learn to do the same, or don't. But don't ever pretend anything you've experienced will somehow determine what I can or can not say.

Perhaps you are the only one being lame. I never said those instances are special. Suffering is suffering. An example of what I meant is that I've never been *****. So while it disgust me and I feel for those who have been, I'll never understand it's true harm. I certainly wouldn't joke about it or expect people to put up with **** jokes in game either.

Simple eh?

Get it?

EDIT: Urg. Censored. I give up.

I gotta say, people are pretty civil in game in MWO in my experience.

Now XBOX Live, on the other hand, is an absolute cesspool of foul language, bigotry, and racism.

Discussion about swearing stopped by swearing filters...well done.
Maybe that should be implemented in the gamechat and VoiP.

Instead of "You are an A_____" you would get "You are so pretty"...including VoiP ^_^
That could actualy lead to some missunderstanding....anyway would be funny.

So no, try again. We'll say whatever we like in chat. If it bothers you, turn chat off. No one has any obligations what-so-ever to even consider your feelings, let alone capitulate to them.

you ARE aware you're anonymously playing video games on the internet, right?

Like, is this a joke?:

"Thanks for reading! I look forward to playing with any and all respectful players, regardless of age, self-identified gender, sexual orientation, nationality, religion, culture, etc."

If you get too triggered by the things people say. then turn off chat.

I can't tell if I'm being trolled right now, but given the egg-shell-headed nature of people in 2016/2017, it would not surprise me if this was real.

In my experience, mwo is one of the most decent gaming communities. Mostly older guys having fun after work.

I wouldn't want people calling out my ethnicity. It's fair to call out shitbags for going on voip to say the n-word.

In real life I'm an ethnic mongrel. Part of my family came to the US escaping genocide. I love the united states and think I won the lottery to be born here. I've been playing this game for 4 years and don't think I've ever heard a N-word or anything like it. As far as the internet or the world goes, mwo might be as good as it gets.

Only once have i had to deal with a very racist bigot in the game in four years of play. The guy was straight up n a zi stereotype to the max typing it all up in chat long before voip was in game as well as firing at team mates at the start of the match. I promptly pulled out my best sgt rock and easy company routine on him.

For the rest just use the options pgi finally put in the game to mute and block people.

There is always 2 camps in this fight...

One thinks if you NEVER say hateful words they go away. This however doesnt work because most problems like this just fester when left to rot.

Then there is the camp that thinks if we just use them like they are everyday words they wont be offensive anymore and just become part of vocabulary.

I cannot tell you which one is winning.

I'd put it in six categories:

1) People who are simply unaware that a word is a slur.
2) People who know it is a slur and us it as such.
3) People who know it is a slur and avoid using it.
4) People who know it is a slur and avoid using it and ask others not to.
5) People who know it is a slur but use it to piss category 4 off.
6) People who were recently in category 1, were told by 4 that it was a slur, but were told in an unhelpful manner (no room for debate, explanation, etc.), and therefore are offended.

It sounds like most of the debate proper is among (4) v (5 and 6), but I think it's worth remembering that 1 and 2 definitely still exist.

(EDIT: This taxonomy ignores for the moment any people directly referred to by a particular slur)

Last night an individual opened up with, "listen all you (the N word)". I promptly muted him and reported him. Unfortunately, I've heard PGI doesn't actually ha e a way to monitor VoIP (no recordings) so unless someone was recording the match themselves, I doubt anything will come of the reports.

Text chat they can actually check though.

View PostDex Spero, on 19 March 2017 - 04:49 PM, said:

haha that was actually one of the racial comments I reported months ago (exact same guy i'm sure cuz that's exactly what happened).

PGI doesn't really care about the n-word (referring to blacks, not Germans). I've sent in screenshots to support or whatever while reporting the guy in game at the same time and nothing. I know the guy still plays because I saw him post on here months later (unless he got a temp ban or something) and it wasn't the first game I'd seen him engaging in that type of behavior.

Funny thing is, I could post the screenshots here and I'd probably get a ban myself for it.

This type of behavior will all end once there are services you can order online to assault or eliminate people from the safety of your own home. As it currently stands, it is too scary for the average person trying to use racial slurs and whatnot in public because of possible physical violence/retribution (hence why they do it on the internet) and also too difficult to order assaults or terminations on those aforementioned people because of legal sanctions against vigilante justice. I think with the right amount of money in the future, people will be able to have access to a wider variety of services than just a ride from Uber when you're drunk or whatever.

Couldnt the same services be hired to deal with the violent ethnic group you appear to have sterotyped?
