For me... It's the Battlemaster.

I know it's a beast in all tiers but I just can't get past how sad its visage makes me. Posted Image (Sorry Alex)

This is what the Battemaster should look like:

The old marauder art is terrible. That little spindly gun mount irks me so hard.

If my Battlemaster had that ridiculous cockpit, I'd be compelled to sell all of them.

I've always liked the original Centurion.

The MWO version took a lot of liberties with the original. It's to the point where people who know Battletech but not MWO look at it cockeyed and say "What is that thing"

And I've got to give them credit. The original is a much beefier mech with a workhorse feel to it. The MWO one feels spindly, not to mention sports a shield-arm - not something that shows up in Battletech outside of Solaris until about the Jihad period.

Heck, the Timby looks nothing short of fat and overweight. The overall shape may look more like the original artwork, but every limb has gotten fatter.
(although I'm more of a fan of the MW4 version)

But that's not the biggest letdown. The biggest letdown by far is the Warhammer, I mean, look at it!

For me I'm actually kinda disappointed with the Direwolf. Not even the model, the model is pretty alright, but more so because the 3D animation of it walking makes it skip around the battlefield as opposed to large, heavy feeling steps.

I feel the same in the atlas , it feels as if its gliding across the map.

Thunderbolt. The TRO thunderbolt looks like some sort of power lifter transformed into a robot god. With its shoulder missile can and huge arm gun, it just always struck me as something powerful, tough and lethal...even awe inspiring. That can looks like it weighs seven tons. That large laser looks like a 5 ton gun, etc.
The MWO tbolt is just...lesser...maybe "more subdued" is a better phrase... in all ways ( as lot of that is the fault of dynamics weapon geometry).

The Battlemaster. The MWO version looks so little like the TRO version that when I first started playing I didn't even recognize it as one. Nothing against the MWO version, but I just don't think it looks remotely like the TRO version, so no point in comparing the two.

Top is ok but MWO version is way better than the bottom set.

I always thought the Battlemaster was a big fat round guy with 20 little guns sticking out of it in all directions. Cactus? Dalek? But I do like the one in MWO anyway.

I liked MW4's versions of a few of the mechs, mostly the Cougar, but I also prefer the Vulture MK2 over the real deal Vulture.

Yeah I like the Vulture / Mk 2 also, as much as the original with no chin hardpoints.

The Cougar by Alex is great, but yeah. I find some differences which slowly grow on me. Like the roof on the cockpit for Alex version is glass, the past ones have armor there. And the shoulders are lower on past Cougars.

Jesus that looks absolutely awful.

What's with the torso-leg connection? Why does it have little wings? Why does its arm have six individual and weak\thin joints? Looking at it's legs, it shouldn't even be able to stand under it's own weight. I think the Marauder was one of the better changes they've done.

The biggest offender for me is the Battlemaster - Not because we've got an ugly recreation - I actually don't mind the modern one. It's just that it looks nothing like the Battlemaster to me. Where are the tall corrugated-look shoulder guards? Where is the vertical missile pod? Why did they take away the iconic rounded glass cockpit (But then leave it on the Marauder IIC?)

The Battlemaster we have now is not ugly. But it hardly looks like a Battlemaster at all.

Are there any mechs in MWO now (or in the pipeline) that you believe were partially or generally cooler looking in the original artwork from the Battletech books, or other Mechwarrior games, or even in Robotech, for example?
  • Trebuchet. Alex' concept art is great, but it ended up looking really bad in the game. I know this is heresy (insert Warhammer 40,000 meme), but I actually thought the Trebuchet looked better in... MWO tactics. <runs for cover>

LoL you should burn for that !! but I agree with you, MWT captured the essence of the trebby far better

I just think that both the in game model and Alex's artwork fall very short, the 3025TRO is superior to all

Others that are complete pigs

Battlemaster the Griffin looks so cool, and is in effect a dinky sized Battlemaster in looks so why does it look so Terrible and so ungundam..

The Javelin runs on the same level of fail as the Trebuchet, why I haven't cancelled this monster is beyond rational thought, maybe it's because its a light mech.

Can't say it's terrible, but the Victor is very underwhelming in looks, though Alex's art work isn't as bad as the 3D model both fall far short of the TRO's line drawings.

Banshee It's never been a classy looking mech, and it performs well in game but it just doesn't sit right with me, it's the worse and I think it, the Treb, and the Victor are fails because they don't define the head correctly just flare it into the shoulders with no 'neck'.

Warhammer heads not beaky enough and the arms are far to square and I don't like the flare, I could understand the nervousness to a degree if they hadn't then gone and made the rifleman and the archer, virtual copies of the Gundams, they're based on.

Just to even the score

I think Alex and the 3D team have made the best versions of the

Hunchback

Raven

Cataphract

Catapult

Cicada

Jenner

There are a few others, that I can't name without looked through books

Most of the clan mechs

Now that's what I call a proper Battlemaster, so glad all mine are mastered and I will never have to pilot one again.

Wow that Trebuchet does look good. Which is pretty surprising for that game.

I'll first moderate what follows by acknowledging that MWO 'mechs are by and large fantastic. There's a near-endless list of Alex making total stinkers look great, for the first time ever.

But a couple standout misses:

First, BattleMaster for me too. I don't recognize it as one. It's just a bland, boxy thing, the original has grace.

Wolverine has a bit of the same syndrome going on, too shapeless and boxy -- though it preserves the essentials of the original design OK. It's supposed to be an ugly 'mech, but the MWO WVR is ugly in a forgettable way.

This is accurate, considering hardly anyone uses the arms because they're "too low".
