They could maybe work in the Battletech strategy video game that HBS is working on though.

I kinda doubt Stackpole was advised of which mechs were in HBS, he might've just looked up cheap mechs and figured it out.
The Stinger, Wasp and Whitworth are all in the new novella and all 3 are not in MWO.
As far as their viability, I think the Wasp and Stinger would be about the same as what the Spider was pre-rescale and with the new tech there are some decent variants. The WSP-3S has ECM, as does the STG-6L so those might be ok.
The Whitworth is kinda just a 10 ton heavier Javelin, but I still have a soft spot for the "Worthless" myself since it always seems like a lighter Trebuchet rather than a heavier Javelin.

...Just give them higher engine caps then...
I mean, they USED to follow some formula to calculate it, back in the day, but now?
Most mechs are completely arbitrary AS FAR AS I KNOW.

This is actually rather false statement... using the Light engine multiplier of 1.4 that most lights actually get for engine cap it takes the 120 series and gives a cap of 168 rounded to 170... lets say PGI is generous and gives them a 175 cap. A 170 would give them a speed tweek top of 148km/h while a 175 would give them a 152km/h, both of those are respectable speeds in a light. On top of that they would get up to 6 JJ's in the bulk of the variants, this gives an almost unparalleled level of mobility as far as mechs go in MWO. Now I know you are going to ask about hard points, well the WSP-1W Wasp packs 6 small lasers. While the Stinger has the STG-3G wich uses 3 medium lasers, now taking into account hard point inflation, something that PGI does on a regualr basis, we could expect a decent level of hard points for their light weight, I would suspect between 5-8 depending on the variants of these mechs.

Why do people think it's any closer to being a thing, than it was before the Backer novella update. ?

2 medium lasers, actually. On the 3G. One in each arm. And a skosh more armor.

Why do people think it's a Wasp on the cover?
Because it pretty plainly is, though it looks like the Primitive Wasp design used.
which frankly, looks silly, IMO.

Look way to bulky for my taste and I do like some bulky mech designs.

The new CGL redesign of the Wasp is the BEST Wasp design ever.
(I absolutely love pretty much all of the CGL redesigns... Except the Wolverine, because it lost the chin-turret).

Maybe if PGI had brain one in that huge, collective melon on top of their shoulders, they'd have devised a way for mechs like the Stinger and Wasp to have a place in the game.
Like, if the live server had options for a 3025 stock mode instead of relegating it to private lobbies where it's only used in purely "for funsies" matches so that people could use mechs in their stock config in order to get used to them, i.e. new players, or people who have been around for a long time and have the money to outfit their mechs to the Nth degree, but are also nostalgic grognards who want to take a break from the meta cheese BS.
PGI could rake in a lot more cash if they tried monetizing something OTHER than mechs. Like a server browser such as can be found in CoD or Battlefield. Where people can setup a game mode, or a series of game modes and maps. Problem is that would actually MAKE SENSE and we all know PGI is completely and utterly incapable of making logical, SENSIBLE decisions.
Because that would also reveal which maps and modes are the least popular and send a message to PGI saying "you got a big f***ing problem here, so maybe it's time to f***ing fix it~!"

Wasp in stock mode sucks. A lot.

Which version of the Wasp though? The WSP-1W used by the Wolf's Dragoons would be a lot like the SL/SPL Firestarter, and that thing was a mean little mech for a long time before that up sizing in the grand volumetric rescaling.

head doesn't wow me and I dislike that it grew a right hand. Very unWaspish. But it's decent. I do wonder how the Stinger looks..

I wasn't a big fan of the RA hand as well, but it sort of grew on me (kind of like it grew on the Wasp, ba dum tssss).
I feel it makes it a bit more visually distinct from the Valkyrie.
I too wonder how the Stinger looks. Hoping it retains the full-on gun.
