You would like to think that
Which one? The "pay to compete" part?
Remember, this topic is about "pay to win", which is really not far removed from "pay to compete".
And yet, for an extremely niche video game, people talk as if that would mean the end of MWO, and with some displaying that high and mighty "I am a comp pro in MWO, what are you?" attitude. And so ...

but really you are just making an *** of yourself...
I just intentionally rudely interjected both "but in 'real' professional gaming ..." and "but in real life ..." perspectives -- and with a cold sharp dagger through the heart.

I have played competitive sports all my life, it started with soccer as a young buck, then i moved onto track and field and then once i got outta school i played paintball competitively and (Still do a little) would ride around the national circuit trying to make it to the World Cup in France.
MWO is no different then the rest of my life, just calmly shooting robutts doesnt do it for me. Killing random bads in solo doesnt make me feel better or even good.
However, going up against another ranked team, the thrill of knowing they are as good if not better then you but you job is to beat them is a thrill i get from nothing else. Even if it is just from a simple video game...
Because its not the setting or the sport, its the fire of competition. Even when im 80 year old i will be racing the guy next to me on his disability scooter.
Well, good for you then ... and me (whether that be video games, sports, and life).
And good luck with your World Cup pursuit, seriously.
