Rethinking Night Vision

Here's some footage of modern night vision. Should we rethink what they might have in 3067? Or keep it as is for aesthetics/nostalgia?

NV and HV used to be much better, to the point that using HV nearly 100% of the time was the way to play, so they nerfed both of them to what we have now.

Plus, you got to remember BattleTech is an 80s era universe. They're going to be using more 80s era "Extras".

Now it's down to only like 60% HV because PGI still likes to throw smog everywhere for no reason.

Its pretty annoying when people shoot you from beyond NV's visible range in the dark. We cant call hacks here, so I'll call it possible evidence of creative tweaking of the graphics pipeline instead.

Removing the limited range would probably help in that case anyway.

I just wish night vision actually worked like real night vision. Why would night vision have a 500m max range? Why would a starry night show up as pitch black?

Same with thermals. They shouldn't have a maximum range.

as usual the problem is conceptual

Keep in mind we don't have any need to have something like scouts. On maps with good visibility - polar, tourmaline, frozen - you can see black dots moving 2000 or more meters away. Scouts? Ok it could be better to get their grid while pointing at a location and hitting a hotkey but so be it.

With visibility good but ranges poor as they are current (things will get worse not better) you should not have such good visibility. But simple to have smoke nebular is not a good option.

As said you need a concept that can provide accurate fire at 2km or even more when you have eyes on target. No Ingame zoom but a separate screen with ITTS (ok thats was its name in Privateer) for TC because zoomed pictures doesn't scale the speed correctly.

You need also to differ between tools of communication and tools of targeting.
For example - the dorito and the minmap are tools of communication - and PGI and 99% of the customers mistake them for tools of targeting - so it could be clouded by ECM.

But the moment ECM hit the deck the team play in Solo drops went from adequate to unplayable and it still this way even worse thanks to Radar Derp

To be honest, I find this topic kinda pointless, since on most games I play, and die early, when I spectate, I see I am almost the only one who ever uses night vision, even on pitch-black night drops..

I simply don't get it why people would rather shoot at red squares and fumble about, than have clear vision and line of sight to their targets..

But that's just me?

Maybe I'm not noob enough?

once upon a time in the Closed Beta the River City map very small ..by start , with Night/Heatview the Blue team has firing perfect Shoots from the Startingpoint to the Startpoint of the Red Team over the full Map

i like the balance of vision modes now...regular for extreme range, and night/thermal have their uses in certain circumstances.

I personally think a searchlight that you can turn on/off should be standard equipment on all mechs

vision modes should have to be unlocked through the skill tree by spending skill points

that would allow for vision modes to be a little stronger since theyd cost skill points

although the searchlight should blind vision modes at short range

I prefer sharpness as the balancing mechanism.

I know that this resulted in blob-warrior online back when we had predator vision, but the REAL problem back then (and now) was that no environmental objects had comparable heat maps. Why wouldn't buildings, factories, etc. have siginificant heat output. Why wouldn't a tarmac in the sun have a significant heat output?

Why do mechs at different heat levels have the same heat output?

The problem was not the heat vision itself, but the lack of environmental detail.

Give other objects heat maps, and reduce the sharpness as necessary to "balance" heat vision. Adjust sharpness and reduce contrast as necessary to "balance" night vision.

Interesting ways of looking at things

(Communications and targeting)
For me low visabilty drops are a nightmare my eyes water
It is not a pleasant or fun experience if I could get away with it I would disconnect every time

(In real life driving at night can be a terrifying experience)

In this game heat vision and night vision is so poor that most people don't use the feature

They should be working on stuff like this instead of the skill tree
IMO

If you give night vision the real world capabilities then what would be the point of night drops. If there is no difference between the two with night vision engaged there is no point to them.

I'm a heavy user of the alternate vision modes, though I wish NV had more range on some maps
