Truthfully, when was the last time you saw a mech of tonnage 70+ loaded with LRM's actually close the distance to the 350-450 meter mark with the group while constantly firing?
Last weekend when I had my Tempest out. That's what I refer to as "Tactical LRMs." If I'm gonna LRM I'm going to do it up close and personal. It shortens trajectory, decreases flight time, increases damage done, and lets me employ secondary weapons.
I like having a LRM launcher even on an assault mech. A LRM15 is nice to have for those times when you can't get a shot woth direct fire weapons without shooting five teammates in the back who are jumping in front of you, or when you're stuck in a trench on Polar Highlands, or when someone is jumpsniping and you can hold the lock JUST long enough to toss a flight over the D4 plateau on Canyon at him, or when they core you out and you use cover to shield you and stay in the fight to support those who aren't cored out. One of my most favorite platforms happens to be a ridonkulous, comedic random gunbag packing a LRM15, an AC10, a PPC, two ML, and an LPL. It's the one designed by a person who couldn't decide what they wanted to bring so they brought everything. But oddly enough, it seems to work. In fact, it often works great in four groups: The AC10 and PPC on one (midrange brawling), the lasers on one (they get hot but excellent for snapshots and crowd control), the lasers and AC10 on one (for facehuggers), and the LRM on one (for shooting over terrain and teammates, or when closing the distance). Probably the most fun big mech I have. Always got something to shoot.
