IIRC, the Lyran Commonwealth combined the skill of the Lyran soldier with the superior tactics of Davion command, and after the Commonwealth dissolved, the Lyrans continued to employ better tacticians. I guess I'll have to go reading again.
I'm by no means well read on lore. The truth of the matter is that no house is appealing to me.
FRR:
Space Vikings + Republic = lol gross. If I see the words "mead" "wench" or "beard" or see a link to some horrible metal band one more time I swear Im succeeding.
Davion:
Not interested in helping them Brits maintain their space Empire.
Laio:
Psychopathic Chinese with that irritating "Sqwawking"
Kurita:
Weeabos
Marik:
Not a single redeeming quality about the Free Worlds League. Although I gather that the MWO house Marik has a pretty good community what with the civil war campaign and so on.

Need I remind you the political system in the Confederation was created by Davions themselves?

And that's what the Clans are there for.

Space NATO? Davion gave his bride the fourth Succession War as a wedding gift...last I checked, NATO tried not to do that.

And you do know that marik was destroyed by those they thought they where protecting?
Well House Marik separated and fought themselves for the leadership and reformed in 3139. However, the Free Worlds League did play a hand setting up the Jihad by providing the WOB with a haven and the equipment, along with the fact that "The Master" who perpetrated the whole event was marik blood. Regardless, part of the Jihad was their fault so they got what they deserved.

I believe there will, however, come a time when cleansing fire shall sweep across the inner sphere. The wicked will turn to ash and be plowed into the fields, renewing what was selfishly exploited and left barren. When that time comes I intend to not sell my services to their defense; false kings and tyrants shall fall, surrounded by the ill-gotten gains that could not save them. Rather I shall watch in awe as the righteous reclaim what is rightfully theirs.
(Yep, I really do get a kick out of my call sign sometimes.)

As far as the Clans, I dislike the Smoke Jaguars, they were the most brutal of the clans, and the were unbelievably cruel, for cruelty's sake, rather than for any real purpose. (I did like Trent though, as he was one of the few jaguars who realized how corrupt his clan had become.) Aside from the Jaguars, I dislike the Steel Vipers, mostly for instigating the wars of reaving.

Davion:
Western Europe / Americas.
Usually portrayed as the goodguys in the game series and given a heaping helping of morality and so much {Noble MechWarrior} paintjob it hurts the eyes , when portrayed as a "villian" it is not because of true villainy but someone else pulling the strings...
Steiner:
Eastern Europe/ Western Europe.
Portrayed as a "good guy" until Melissa Stiener walks into the room. When portrayed as good it normally gets the {Noble MechWarrior} treatment, but when portrayed as bad... this faction gets a double gloss coat of N.A.Z.I. with Communist detailing
Liao:
Western/Lower Eastern Asia
portrayed as the cunning/foxy underdog when good, portrayed as shifty-eyed scum of the earth when villianized. Gets a double dose of "cheating B*stard" in videogames
Kurita:
East Asia/ Middle Eastern
portrayed like Liao with a little bit less B*stard, when held as good it gets a heaping of Honorable Bloodknight, when held in the villain spotlight they quickly get a helping of "scheming B*stard"
Marik:
Americas
A-Marik-A... usually isolationist. When portrayed as good it gets the Extreme Morality treatment, usually does not get the villain side unless you count Blakists, then it gets a small dose of "side scheming B*stard"
Rasalhague:
Northern Europe
if portrayed as good it gets a metric ton helping of Honorable Bloodknight, scratch that, when portrayed as ANYTHING, it gets a metric ton helping of Honorable Bloodknight.
anything else except the Clanners is practically called AFRICA.
