Eh you just have to find the appropriate stories, there are a lot more "waifu" stories because those are relatively easy to churn out, since you just need a cute/moe design for those (i.e. like american sitcoms just need one situation). Still there are a few mecha series that are somewhat ok.

I contest this. Mechwarrior stuff is higher tech and more ridiculous than most UC Gundam. In UC Gundam they only just invented the mech sized PPC and don't have 2 million ton space ships or FTL...

Whats teh biggets spaceship in gundam?

take the iSS it has 450t, and thats just a rather tiny space station for housign soem astronouts powering it and some research. 2million tons sound sjust "huge". some aircraft carriers are easily weighting 100.000 tons and ontop you need fuel and water for the crew and whatever you need in outer space for longer travels. So 2 million isn't even much. it is rather realistical.

you should go and buy a boat https://www.quora.co...ircraft-carrier
But don't forget your supply needed http://www.midway.or...-Statistics.pdf

so in the end you rack up tonnage quite quicklywith food and water supply to run that stuff + ammo and mechs you would store in your ship The 2M tonnage in BT usually inclused all you cna put in, so it is far from unrealistical, and I guess your gundam universe like crafts will surely hae similar tonnages. No one probably just ever give anything about figuring out their possible tonnage.

As neat as the tie fighter short film is, the art style leaves a bad taste in my mouth. If a mature BT 2D or 3D animation is a must, then let it be a western art style with western writing.

At this time, I cannot conjure up an example beyond what has already been mentioned.

I do have an issue with a lot of anime expressions, and over exaggerated movement. Nothing ruins an otherwise great Space Opera faster than the pilot suddenly doing a silly happy dance and with his face growing 2-3x it's normal size, Xs for eyes, etc.

Well...almost nothing. Sudden gender swaps, fluffy space mascots, etc, are all pretty dang good at killing the mood, too.

Give me an animated movie with the gritty feel of the rebooted BSG season 1, and I'm all in, regardless of it being western or eastern style animation.

yes this weird sudden out of style thrown "emotion spastics" is really what can kill an entire movie/series.

tried the Knights of Sidonia one... still couldn't get into it.

Will look at the other ones, though I admit, I really don't have a taste for the Giant Robo style, so the top one I don't anticipate being a fan of, though that is a matter of taste, and not necessarily quality.

The middle one though... might be of interest to me. (though the mecha are pretty blah, in the few pics I have perused so far)

I think the last new anime I saw (that wasn't like..one of the appleseed reboots) might have been Vexille.... and tbh, it left a lot to be desired, too.

Even Ranma 1/2 kept it reasonable for the most part. Something bad happened to the scene post 2002/2004ish or somewhere around there.

Something happened in the early eighties actually, and gradually a snowball turned into an avalanche. It has something to do actually with Ranma 1/2, because of its author.

This show happened, and anime was changed forever.

In one stroke, one show introduced just about every anime trope there is.

Maximum Insanity
Aliens invading your high school trope
The Strange Transfer Students
The Foreign Student
The Harem
The Freeboarders
The Tsundere
The Yandare
The Kuudere
The Trap
The Reverse Trap
The Pervert
The Childhood Friend love triangle
The Fiancees coming out of the woodwork
The overly Rich Guy/Girl who has everything but love
The Ugly Guy with the Hot Wife and Hot Daughter
The Ensemble of Eccentric Characters

Not to say the least
The first verifiable true Waifu in anime, and later also other Waifus.

Not to mention, the first ever use of Engrish in an anime. "Dahling!"

Also introduced the following to the anime world, the creators of the series.

Rumihiko Takahashi (Ranma 1/2, Inuyasha, Maison Ikkoku)
Studio Pierrot (Naruto, Bleach)
Studio Deen (Full Metal Alchemist)
Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell)

In the US,
Viz Studios

The whole idea of fansubs didn't exist until people started doing this show.

Hm, maybe, but the craft in gundam aren't meant for interstellar travel (because that's impossible in UC). They probably don't carry as much stuff.

AFAIK the largest MS Carrier is the General Reville, at 200x630 meters, which carries 48 mobile suits (at about 30 tons each). I don't have the full weight of it, but the supplies are maintained by supply ships in Gundam.

I think there biggests is the Jupitiris? It's not a warship, but a mining ship. At 2000 meters it meets the length of the Potemkim, but doesn't carry any armor or weapons, so no 3000 ton (spits out drink) naval PPCs.

I would recommend Aldnoah.Zero as well, however some people it didn't jive with. Those that liked it understood that the MC may have aspergers or suffering form of PTSD from the events that occurred that lead to the series liked the series. While everyone that hated it, really hated on the MC for being so unemotional and at times over powered as he seemed to be the only one to use his brain.
  • MC is 16 likely going on 17 in season 1, and 18/19 in season 2
  • No large chested females but MC does have 2 to 3 female chars fawning over him, The Life long friend, The one girl he saves, and the secretive bad ***
  • No Super Sayan Power ups just brain power and tactics, the closest thing to a power up is a ship and that doesn't really do much.
  • MC is the complete opposite of Shinji Hikari from the first Eva, not whinnie, will jump into the mecha (Mostly his sister will tell him to get out of the mech) (Infact this char would likely toss Shinji out of the EVA and do it himself and not screw it up.

I'd totally recommend Fafner in the Azure. Fair warning though, it's one of the most brutal shows I have seen, Not quite Ideon levels of brutal, but definitely Attack on Titan or MuvLuv. (Have a favorite character? they'll probably be dead or worse before the series is over.) I also liked Gundam Unicorn.

Make it go away. Someone please make this all go away. My eyes are bleeding from the blasphemy.

Westernized, adult oriented with light tinge of humor, and plenty of death, gore with functional looking robits - that I could totally dig.

It's all the other drivel that get's thrown in with anime, that I cannot.

they did butcher the story quite a bit to condense it so much, but the animation was first class, especially since it was all by hand still, back then. Turth be told, I can overall deal with the animation for Macross II and Macross Plus, even though both were rather weak, story-wise. (Though I did like the Valkyries and Destroids in both of those, and I most liked the Mecha in Macross Zero, though it started getting too mystic mumbo jumbo for my tastes.)

And say what one will, and as much as I hate HG, when they built the Robotech mythos, it was groundbreaking, and while it is showing it's age, it's still pretty impressive (though a lot of the Southern Cross is a bit painful to watch).

Kind of curious who it can be blasphemy to debate anime on an IP that literally was created from anime, as the original mechs were ALL from Macross, Crusher Joe and Dougram (as well as vehicles and even some of the uniforms).

The real blasphemy is the people who try to bury and hide the truth.

PowerPuff Girls?

IDK...what kills me is how you can watch something that is generally...maybe stage 3? like the new Voltron Series? And then it has random moments of stage 9, that completely ruin it (though in fairness, it's really not very good to begin with.....but then...watching the original Voltron over.......*shudders* so formulaic. Whether it's "Form blazing sword!!!" or "Power level over 9000!" all these dang braindead anime are some simplistic and stupid it's ridiculous.

Ok ok...ugh.
I'm just saying anime is fine, beautiful art, in it's own right. I also understand the Btech has it's roots in there with macross etc.
I was just ragging on Neopop Bubblegum Moonstar type anime without a coherent story line anime. That crap drives me nuts. Not a huge manga guy either, tho. Sorry I like my comics, colored Posted Image My fault for coming off that way.

You kind of had me til the "Envangelion great, GitS/Akira crap" Anime hipster rant.

Mazinger Z gets pass because of it's era, was well before the "realism" animes like Dougram or Votoms came around. It, Chogokin, Getter Robo, and later the whole "Voltron" stuff, are also largely a different genre.

But evangelion (which also more accurately fits into the Giant Robot Mecha class)? You call Akira overrated? Convoluted and metaphysical aspirations aren't the same as great storytelling. And Evangelion is pretty infamous for not being the most coherent of stories on the best day. As for the Mecha... ? I blame Evangelion and anime?manga like it for ushering in the odd, anorexic mecha aesthetic that has plagued Macross Frontier, 7, Delta, etc..... and too many other modern anime.

If it wasn't for the decent QA on the overall animation compared to many, and the decent amount of character building in spite of the terrible nonsensical "plot" that gives it legs.

Well, and the fact that if anime kids these days can sit through Dragonball (and somehow consider it high art.... ) they'll sit through ANYTHING.

Eva is deep man. It oozes philosophical undertones, and the character development and writing is top notch for an anime, especially the dialogue. They did an extremely good job putting the series together and presenting the progression, despite the convoluted and mysterious nature of the story.

Guess what?

Not all stories are supposed to be corn syrup. Eva is one of them. It is easy to watch but hard to digest because the flavor is so complex you have to spend some time with contemplation to figure out what it is all about. It isn't a series you watch one time.

As a novelist, I look at stories quite differently from the average person. I've written mysterious convoluted stuff that dive deep into dreams and psyche, and it is very hard to pull off. I've been watching through Eva again over the past year (episode here or there) and I can see when, where and what writing mechanisms they are using the pull off the plot. It isn't bad, nor is it trash, it is anything but--the series is a masterpiece. I have four episodes left (saw it over a decade ago) so I'm not sure if I'll go to tears like I did when (spoiler alert) Spike dies in Cowboy Bebop, but we'll see.

If characters can elicit strong emotions then the series is special. Very few can do this.

Akira did not. About the only thing that movie has ever done for me is put me to sleep about 2/3 through in one particular spot. Every. Damn. Time. And I've seen it several times--tried to, but then I fall asleep. Sometimes this is okay--Meet the Feebles does this (not an anime), but the movie overall is fantastic. Akira is not.

GiTS... cardboard characters? Need I say more? Some of the worst voiceover work for a main I have ever seen. Awful, awful dialogue and plot. Want something good along the same vein? Read Gibson, or any of the other cyberpunk authors that came before the movie. Or hell, play System Shock--the game's plot, story, dialogue and progression is loads better than GiTS.

Lastly, I take being called a "hipster" as an insult. I'm anything but. If you ask folks who know me locally how they'd classify me, my bet is they'd say...

I'm an eccentric ******* with a big heart... if that's possible.

Anyways, since you had to resort to insults, I consider your post null and void. Have a nice day!
