To Survive, Battletech Franchise Should Go Back To It's Roots. Anime-Roots!

Honestly, I'm no fan of anime. It seems to consist mostly of stupid, repetitive harem pieces and other nutty drek that makes no sense or is utterly depressing (and makes no sense.) Most of the anime fans I know basically sum up most of the series like that - endless harem pieces, or a few ones that were decent at one time, but which eventually went off the deep end.
I see no benefit to adding that to Battltech, and I honestly don't think the game needs mechs doing ballet or stupidly forgoing real weapons in favor of rock'em sock'em robot action. God, I hate crap like that. Yes, it was tolerable when I was a kid and watching Voltron was fun, but seriously, WHY?! Why in an age that should have real ranged weapons does everything have to devolve into melee combat? It's just cheesy. Yes, yes - it's a sci-fi trope (Jedi and Sith, for example), but for me, it just doesn't work for giant robots.
Same idea with giant robots that are normally aerospace fighters with guns and missiles feeling a sudden need to transform into big, slow, stupid, and much easier to hit humanoid forms... just so they can slug it out at point-blank range with the equally stupid enemy. That stuff is straight out of some of the Battletech source material (Robotech), and it makes me sick to watch it.
No, the game needs things like: sane licensing - this nonsense where each company can only produce one type of BT product, and a dozen companies are involve basically ensures the IP will die off. Imagine if Marvel worked that way? You'd be lucky to get a Marvel TV show or movie once every few years at best with no merchandising. BT also probably needs some freshening up to appeal to newer generations, and just general quality writing, games, etc. Anime - while it can be quality - is not some sure-fire way to fix Battletech, especially given the horrible quality of a lot of anime out there.

A video I clipped together from that and other Votoms battles. Set to one of my favorite newer metal bands.
Not sure if you've had the chance to hear Animals As Leaders, but they are insaaanely talented, that is if you follow the Djent scene at all (think heavy metal meets jazz). Just saw them on Friday. Before them, Veil of Maya (not super popular but very good) played, and I was impressed.

Familiar with all of the above. And Meshuggah, Born of Osiris, etc. Good stuff, all.

I wouldn't even consider anything in that one a mech, more like stupid pseudo-science-fiction armor, that provides minimal body protection,no under arm protection, no inner thigh protection, and no structural support for the added weight on the arms and legs.
The reason you want thigh protection is due to the major artery and veins in that area that could lead to a bleed out. NFSW, Scene from Black Hawk down, View Discretion is Advised.

but if you want to sell your product (like fantasy games) you better go
So in the end lets not complain about the direction aniem went, lets better complain about the general direction of nonsense and stupidity many other genres went as well.
Some say over overstimulation of sense caused to go more extremes, but I kinda don't know, most people cosnuming this stuff or getting into it are those having the least relation to reality and RL experience. While we grow up on nude beaches and no one of us freaked out so much. Maybe because we had a proper and better relation to being naked is just normal and nothing feraking crazy or sexuality related only. But something in the newer generations seriously goes horribly wrong somehow and the effect on anime is just one of it's symbtoms amongst many others non anime related ones.

Gundam is hit or miss, depending on one's tastes, but there is enough of it that something is bound to resonate with just about any fan of these kinds of giant robots. Short list off the top of my head:
08th MS Team
0080 War in the Pocket
0083 Stardust Memory
Thunderbolt
MS IGLOO
There are other ones that are good as well, but I suspect those are the ones that would mostly appeal to this crowd.

To be fair, while Inaho is very low key, he does show emotions. One just has to pay closer attention in his case.
Aldnoah.Zero is pretty good, IMO. I really enjoyed it. Also has a fantastic soundtrack that TheB33f seems to appreciate. In fact, I may start rewatching it today.
There are a lot of different kinds of anime out there. Saying that anime wouldn't work for BattleTech because of certain well known tropes is akin to saying a movie wouldn't work because you don't like The Fast and the Furious or Mission Impossible.

I normally separate Fantasy, Sci-Fi, and alt Reality far more then most. In fantasy I let things go to the absurd, were in Sci-fi and alt Reality I favor more grounded and more realistic approach.

Gundam Unicorn is fantastic. Robot Fights! Space Physics! Politics! Would recommend to Battletech Fans!
The TV version is freely available on youtube
The 08th MS is great for people who like hard robot stuff. The battles are almost ground based slugfests, battletech style. It has one of my favorite fights of all time.
Just watch that fight scene. It's ten minutes and it's great.

I love Unicorn, but I don't think it would appeal that much to BattleTech fanatics. Too much newtype space magic. Thunderbolt, though...
...might be gritty and brutal enough for their tastes.
Thunderbolt is currently being released, and has none of the tropes many seem so afraid of. I don't think the sweeping generalizations about anime (even modern anime) are really very accurate.
And yeah, 08th was great. Still, I don't get the lack of love for 0083...

I'd say the tropes and generalizations are very accurate...just not all encompassing.
Also, while that one looks better than average, has a lot of the slightly overblown feel of things like Macross Plus..... if that is indicative of the entire series, while I'd watch it, it probably wouldn't get repeat viewings.

fantasy isn't necessarily the one going crazy, fantasy usually means featuring supernatural elements (like magic) but it does not necessarily go crazy.
@Product9 yes at some parts that all went already a bit too "crazy"

War in the Pocket should be just about right. It's got some damn good fights and the climax is good space politics.

Oh yes, entirely. A lot of anime is pure ****, but so is most of the stuff you see pumped out of Hollywood or on TV, so it doesn't bother me.

True
THough you don't see too many people on here trying to convince anyone that Hawaii Five 0, Keeping up with the Kardasidiots, Survivor or the Voice, is high brow entertainment. Sadly you see plenty passing off One Piece, Dragonball, etc as some form of enlightened higher entertainment. So when the dregs of the genre are constantly touted as though they are the highlights..... well.....
Ya got issues.
As for any stories about a War in the Pocket....I'd tell ya a little more about that, but it would probably get me banned..... but yeah, plenty of great climax!
