The skill tree can be compared to putting an arresting tail hook on an Air Force plane that will never land on a carrier flight deck. Even government people are smart enough to figure that out - but not PGI.

What does GXP even do anymore?.

GXP can be spent on ANY mech chassis you own or buy. EXP can only be spent on the specific chassis it was earned on.

So if you have a crap ton of GXP you can go to the store buy any new mech chassis variant that you want and immediately spend GXP and C-Bills to buy nodes for it without playing it first and earning EXP. Or you could use the GXP to fill the remaining nodes to 91 for any chassis you own if it was only basic'd or Elite'd before the patch.

In my mind keeping a bank of GXP is a good thing for when new mechs are released or whatever so you can immediately get skill nodes before taking them into the game.

Imagine if they put the effort on this junk into actually working on something worthwhile (new maps, optimization, bug fixes, etc.)

I agree 100% PGI could have had 50 to 100 maps by now. And more creative gameplay modes a long time ago. They did not listen to us. We are the ones in the community who have paid for this disservice. Maybe they can hear the sound of my money staying in my pocket. Then they can dry up and blow away like almost every game that has been out there. PGI you shot yourselves in the wallet with this screwed pooch! Do you guys even play the game?

Consider that some of the players have been so utterly disgusted by the Skill Tree to stop playing entirely and some of the others are still struggling with skilling out their first couple mechs.
I trust a venn diagram isn't needed to illustrate this?

While I will agree that the skill point/currency system is unintuitive (six different resource pools to buy skill points), I fail to understand how the people on this forum could possibly be confused by the skill tree itself. The new skill progression system amounts to nothing more than a simplistic flow chart; in fact, I'm not sure what's more sad: the Skill Tree (if you can call it that) or the fact that many you think it's complicated. If navigating the 'Skill Tree' hurts your head, I can only assume that you failed (won't complete) high school.
The tree's apparent complexity is fake, but the squishy human in front of the keyboard sees too many infinitestimally small change increments to pick from to commit to a single decision. Too many options = analysis paralysis.

That's exactly why many developers streamline the design of skill trees in their games as much as possible, and why this one could be streamlined in the same exact way (most likely removing 2/3rd of the nodes in the process)

Quote

Beyond that, it is highly likely that PGI will release recommended skill progression templates for new (and old) players to follow if they can’t be bothered to think...
You hope. No such thing has been promised or even hinted at, and the feedback on the need for such a feature dates back to the first PTS.

Besides...

Don't underestimate PGI's fondness of making unpopular decisions...

I think the new skill tree is fantastic...for nerds. Unfortunatly for PGI the major part of community are players not nerd, we prefere play matches not burn our brain to discover the best path in skill tree. Evidently in PGI the rate of nerds is more then players! :-)
I want be propositive, not all is lost, simply I ask to replace this skill tree with a new skill tree linear, where you can choose only node useful for you. I mean linear tree for specific weapon, for cooldown or range or damage etc.

As I have said before, it is essentially a new and different game now, under an old skin. All that cash value has been taken without consent. The decent thing to do PGI is give us all back our cash money as well. Not just fiat fake cash.

If they later want to spend it on this new game, they can.

Nah, it's a programmer's design: all numbers, UI that "does the job" but doesn't account for this pesky user experience stuff.

OMG! the trolling is insane. The drama!

I find the skill tree to be both fun and a nice change of pace. The game I have played for years is very different now. I have over 300 mastered mechs. Yes the amount of nodes is a bit large, but I found that after speccing about 3 mechs, I had the hang of it and speccing more is taking about 3-6 minutes once I have an idea of what I want to do with the mech.

I played 10 or so matches yesterday and the discussion on the tree was overwhelmingly positive.

Overwhelmingly positive by that you mean a measily 25 posts to over 200 posts that are negative. ROFL....just...ROFL...

Been Playing since the first game was released in 1990? or so. played through the hack that stole the code from microsoft and loved the new mechs. Now the game is ruined. I play Mech Warrior to play not spend all my time in configing the game. So it uninstalled for good after all this time CYA...

You all agreed to this and everything else they want to do when you signed on. I won't waste my breath (digital) on this ranting. Even these complaints you all love to do are OWNED by PGI and Microsoft.

From the moment you could talk, you are ordered to listen.

Here's some stats to put it into perspective:

You may the remember the Skill Tree Survey I posted here, as well as in General Discussion, the German section of the forums and on /r/OutreachHPG.

The Survey has been active for 30 hours, with almost 500 responses. Since activity has been winding down, I've decided to close the survey and publish the results.

Here are the visualisations auto-generated by Google (please be aware that the year 2016 was duplicated by mistake - this is only an issue in the diagram, not in the raw data):
https://docs.google....g/viewanalytics

And here, especially for our spreadsheet warriors, is the raw data. I am looking forward to any conclusions one might draw from it:
https://docs.google....t#gid=345765850

EDIT:
For some reason Google doesn't show the descriptions for the 1 to 5 scales:
Question 1 asked people to rate the Skill Tree from very bad to very good (1 to 5)
The Mech build question ranged from "casual, unconventional, fun- or lore-oriented" (1) to "optimized, min-maxed, competitive" (5)

So.. assuming that the two left columns would indicate that people play less / spend less, the two right columns indicate that people play more / spend more and the middle column being no noticeable change in playing or spending..
  • 53% polled will play less / spend less
  • 21.8% DGAF
  • 25.1% will play more / spend more

That seems to indicate that PGI would suffer a net loss.

There are 27.9% more players unhappy with the new system than there are players happy with it.

I feel that you should be able to test the skill trees without saving them (only in the test deck). I do feel that the trees are overly bloated (I am a new player) and could not possibly imagine what this would be like if I had 200 mechs vs the 7 or 8 I have.

I do also feel that there should have been some kind of disclaimer posted by the game that would have told me the Kodiak pack I spent real money on would be changed in less then a week and have its stats completely changed.

Most new players, I would imagine, don't take the time to read every single forum post an patch note from 6 months ago. I just wanted to play and I would not have spent the money I did had I known I literally would have the stats changed in a matter of days. ( all the quirks removed etc.)

I played mwo for years now the game wasnt fun all the time but it was even better as we played 8vs8 on 4 maps.
Guys dont work on the parts of the game that worked well.
No one needed a new loading screen or that new skilltree.
I do a break and wait for Battletech.
