So I am Wondering if anything is having success with JJs and Assault mechs while using the new JJ tree.

I have a Heavy Metal and Dragon Slayer that have been literally grounded in the mech bay when the nerfed JJs. Both were bought specifically for their jump capability so lots of money down the toilet when PGI nerfed JJs so I am wondering if investing heavily in the JJ tree brings the magic back or if they are still lackluster.

Also I would be curious about impression on the new JJ tree on any mech. Is anyone finding it worthwhile to invest SP there?

I play dual ppc light/med pop rart mechs a lot. Skilled up three differant chassis, took the left 2 columns of jj nodes, and had a blast.
I enjoy jump from roof top to roof top in river city way to much and the nodes made a easier. Also, my phoenix hawk can now jump up to hpg wall. Pre skill tree it would not make it.

You can feel the difference the tree makes for any JJ mech, including assaults. Highlander and DS poptarts arent coming back though, because a 30 damage alpha doesn't cut it anymore for an assault.

With the structure tree, armor quirks, and the missile tube fix, CQC Victors are definitely a thing now. Havent tried the Highlander yet, but you can get 150 CT armor on it with the right set up.

I tried to fill up about 80% of the jump jet tree on my Executioner, let's just say I unspec'd them all because I couldn't even tell that I was doing enough better that I would rather have seismic and radar dep instead since they give real, noticeable benefits.

My 732b I think got up to 161 CT armour. It was actually the first thing I speced because I wanted to check out the jj tree.

The jj tree does definitely make a difference. Mostly for duration, very little for lift velocity. So poptarting probably won't make a comeback. For someone like me that always feels compelled to jump on top of everything the tree is a godsend.

Why does everyone always assume that if you mention Assault Mech and JJs in the same sentence you intend to Pop Tart??

I don't like Poptarting, I do like agile, jump capable mechs, especially Assault Mechs. I think this is what pissed me off the most about the JJ nerfs, they totally killed my style of play just because people used PPC/Gauss and poptarted. PGI ruined all the good things about having actual usable JJs just to fix the stupid PPC/Gauss meta...blah.

Anyway, thanks for the info. Guess it is not worth it then because what I was hoping was for my Heavy Metal mounting 10 tons of JJs to be able to actually jump to the top of the ridges in Canyon Network and actually do so with some sort of haste, kind of like it did when I spend 6000 MC worth of real $$$ on it to buy it. It just isn't worth 15-20 points investment if it can't give me that kind of mobility. Guess I will keep the Heavy Metal and Dragon Slayer on the scrap heap <big sigh>.

The JJ tree is awesome for any JJ enthusiast. As you might expect it gets better the smaller your mech. I put that tree in my Heavy Metal and it is noticable. You really get up in the air quickly and get a bit more height. Even so it is still an Assault mech and you aren't going to be leaping from building to building very quickly nor are you going to jump anything much taller than your mech.


Now the tree on javelins or Phoenix hawks...that's a thing of beauty.

Well I actually decided to say screw it and speced out my Dragon Slayer for JJs and Mobility and I am pleasantly surprised. It isn't pre-nerf JJs but they did become actually useful. First of all I can actually jump to the top of the ridges in Canyon Network which finally makes the JJs useful again. Second, the velocity, while still a bit sluggish was at least OK. Third, I love the new forward vectoring because it is extremely nice not to have to be running full bore in order to actually jump forward.

On the subject of Poptarting though I think they should redesign the tree a bit. They should make it so you had to take vectoring to get lift, that way it would be very hard to jump straight up and down behind cover. Instead your mech would always want to float forward over the cover you were trying to use. Hell maybe that is the secret behind fixing Poptarting all together. Just give all JJs forward thrust all the time.

You know I am very tempted to max the JJ tree on my Vipers. I mean the Viper's defining feature in my book anyway is its extreme jump capability and being able to add to that just seems almost too tempting to pass up.

the thing is the viper jumps good enough that it doesnt really need to jump better

and the mechs that do need to jump better arnt helped enough by the jumpjet tree for it to be worth it


so what is the jump jet tree really for? its not for mechs that jump fine without it. and its not for mechs that jump so badly that the extra skills dont help them? so what mechs are really benefitting from this skill tree?

Jump Jets are only useable on mediums, not even viable on lights beyond the single JJ for maneuvability. Mediums can get some jumps in though.

they need to completely rework jumpjets again

because a light mech shouldnt be able to jump around on 1 jumpjet better than an assault can jump with 4 jumpjets.

theres just something very wrong with having diminishing returns on jumpjets you should be rewarded for having MORE tonnage in jumpjets not punished for it.

Well I don't know about Assaults with jump jets, but I know my Shadow Cat can now jump up on the walls on HPG from a standstill at the lowest point, with ease..

Get ready for wall snipers yall!

First thing I did was max out the JJ tree for my MLX. That little mech can fly now.

I tried max JJs on SDR 5V because well that mech is only good for jumping after all. So I dropped on Tourmaline and the enemy team went to the caldera in E5. I went there and jumped from E4 to E6 all over the enemy team, that was like 600 m long jump Posted Image , of course with just 2 MPLs you can't do much in terms of offensive but well I planted them an improved UAV over their heads while overflying them and the lurmers on my PUG team promptly terminated the enemy team. I have already renamed that mech to LAM (Land Air Mech)

It was very fun, but it's not worth the point it costs unless you are just trying to troll around.

Hmm, I've heard stories from back before the grand JJ nerfs. Stories about berserker SDR-5V pilots, who would leap fearlessly into enemy formations, and attack them while performing the most amazing aerial manoeuvres. Perhaps, it would be worth my time to skill up the 5V, and then recapture even just a fragment of that glory.....
