So far, my hypothesis is that you should spend no more than 6 points in operations (get to the cool run directly on the right), and rather max out heat gen in the firepower tree for laser builds.
Reason, the operations tree is a very expensive tree with a lot of "dead" nodes.
Cool run would always be nice to have, 15% extra heat containment is kind of a "one time thing" though, while -10.5% heat generation applies to every shot you fire.
This leads me to believe that such a large amount of skill points is better spent elsewhere than the operations tree.

But, can anyone tell me what the baseline value for mech "heat capacity" is, if there is such a thing? That would enable me to get some hard facts behind or against my theory.

A few seconds of searching would show you this thread https://mwomercs.com...inment-testing/

and this thread https://mwomercs.com...pacity-formula/

and this thread https://mwomercs.com...runheat-quirks/

on the same topic. Unfortunately none of them contain the answer, although they do provide useful information.

'Sort of' answer is that each mech has a 'base' heat capacity of 30, and then +1.12 for each SHS or +1.5 for each DHS. And some portion of these are multiplied by your Heat Containment % and some are not. PGI dev response has indicated one thing (Heat containment applies to base + all heat sinks), testing seems to indicate otherwise.

If anyone has definitive answer that can be confirmed by testing, I would appreciate seeing it.

(Edit: Dev reply is on page 2 of thread https://mwomercs.com...n-whats-better/ )

Thanks, very kind.
So so far it looks like I'm correct in my assessment

Actually, "base" heat is 28. It goes to 40 with the mandatory 10 heatsinks (single). If you upgrade to DHS, the heat cap is based on how many of those 10 are in your engine. With all 10 in the engine it goes to 48. 47 for 8 engine DHS, 46.5 for 7, etc.
