I don't like the Portal.

In fact, I despise the Portal.

In particular because the Portal does not have an installer repair tool, or if it does, it is very clunky to use last I checked.

I prefer the original launcher program.

I'd hoped PGI wouldn't have forced people to adopt the Portal, but it looks like that's coming.

This does not make me happy and I do not approve of this.

The portal works fine for me, and launches the game in good order. Never had a portal crash or failure.

Well, that, and I never had to run a system repair since I started playing in closed beta; this game has been exceptionally stable and reliable on my personal computer

If you click the triple line icon above the Mechwarrior online icon in the portal, you can launch repair tool from there.

I won't touch that Portal. I tried it and uninstalled it within two minutes. I revile the Portal.

..but, hey, at least Steam users aren't affected.. and you can use the Steam client to update the game, while still running the game with the standalone launcher with Steam turned off.

1.) Download MWO from Steam

http://store.steampo...Warrior_Online/

2.) Go to your MWO folder inside of Steam

Most installations put it into C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\MechWarrior Online\Bin32 or Bin64 (depending on your OS.)

3.) Import your current game settings into Steam's MWO.

Just a simple copy and paste override.

4.) Create a shortcut to the MWOClient.exe file in the appropriate Bin folder.

5.) Turn off Steam and double click the standalone shortcut that you made.

There you go. You can keep MWO up to date, automatically, by running Steam on patch day.. while still playing MWO on the standalone client that is inside of Steam and doesn't require Steam to be running to execute.

This is ^

It's pretty much what I do. And Steam updates the game faster and smoother. Where as the old client would try to strangle my computer.

I haven't see this Portal thingy (except for when I played on the WC client.)

I'm not using Steam.

Is it only getting rolled out to certain people or something?

They're going to entirely disable the old patcher, to force everyone that isn't a Steam user to use the new Portal.

I don't remember when the estimated cutoff date for disabling the patcher is.. other than SOON™.

Humm this version will not run on its own.

I am not sure that is the case for me. Soon as I started using the portal I have had weird things going on in game like the screen going black or lock ups. Never once had it with the normal launcher and nothing else changed on my PC. Now I have no clue why the portal would cause issues once I was already in the game but it is a pretty big coincidence that I developed the problems only after I started using the portal.

In Portal, you need to right click on the MWO icon in it to provide MWO Repair Tool options.

MWO Repair Tool does not function on its own these days.

Speaking of the devil, it's patching right now...

Was just going to point this out. Had to use it yesterday to get rid of some graphical abnormalities I was getting. I've personally never had an issue with Live or PTS so far with it.

And what if Portal will need repairs itself?

1) use steam

2) it's not as though there's anything redeeming about the old launcher

fire it up, click play, same old same old

I don't think Portal needs repairing, but in that case, you would have to uninstall it (it doesn't prompt to uninstall MWO or the PTS) and then download Portal installer itself and it will install the latest version at that point (and install/update your .NET version as needed).

I've just tested it just because I had nothing better to do.

It's not the ideal route, but it's there.

It's just easier going straight to Steam if you don't want to deal with Portal related issues.
