Dearest Mechwarriors,

There is just something that irks me greatly about players who do not know the proper phonetics for calling targets. Below are the proper pronunciations for all twenty six letters in the English alphabet:

Posted Image

In our universe we also have callsigns for certain targets indicated by Greek letters: Alpha and Beta are points on Domination; Epsilon, Gamma, Kappa, Sigma and Theta are points in Conquest. From what I've observed targets are called by their letter callsign and grid locations are the callsign plus grid number. Educate yourselves fellas because knowing is half the battle!

All my hatred for whomever says Indigo instead of India,

Your best pal Milkshakes <o<^-._.-^>

Who cares - the point of phonetics is to be understood. In my opinion any non ambiguous words are fine, and i dont think there is a word that rhythms with Indigo.

Yes, i do know the actual phonetic alphabet because i work in remote support and use it constantly, but i dont mind as long as its not ambiguous (though, Americans going "N as in Nike" are idiots)

exactly. it's pretty much the first thing that come to my mind.

Yesterday, I couldn't think of anything except xylophone for X, lol.

I have used Jesus for J... zebra for Z (i think that's a common one too)... Nancy for N (another common one)

Should make a funny dictionary...

Since this topic and the original OP is boring, I'm hijacking this thread and making it fun (And to troll him)

Everyone, post your funny alphabet that you will call out in game. And next time you see him, make sure you throw something like "T for T-Rex"

I'll start:

A: Alabama
B: B7tch
C: Camel
D: Danger
E: Elephant
F: Fish
G: Goldfish
H: Hero Razen the God of North Wind
I: Indigo
J: Jesus
K: Kangaroo
L: Llama
M: Montgomery
N: Nipple
O: Ozzy
P: Pen...
Q: Queen
R: Ratatouille
S: Spatula
T: Terrorist
U: USA
V: Vermont
W: W@nker
X: Xylophone
Y: Yogi
Z: Zion

Goo!

Goldfish is too easily confused with Fish, I'd recommend Giraffe or Gargamel.

I learned the nato phonetic alphabet in the air cadets (UK) when I was a teen doing radio, I always assumed the other things people use in games/mwo like indigo were the US phonetics. So they also use nato?

Why wouldn't we? I mean, we're only the most militarily relevant member of NATO. Don't let current events distract you from that.

Kangaroo
Other Guy
No the Other guy
Not that one the OTHER other guy

The problem with that list is none of them are curse words or sexual innuendos.

What's the point of even plugging your mic in if you aren't going to be using one of those two groups to call targets?

Best thing about that ? You *KNOW* that your base sexual innuendo *WILL* be understood by everyone.

Humans are a lot of things, some good even, but they are also mostly perverts ...

I once blurted "kodiak in boobs two !" on VOIP, got a couple of laughs *AND* some help !

Awful things I assume?

Not even sure. The way these people talk, I either don't catch it at all, or they could mean pretty much anything.

'Grouse mate, noworries (that's one word I think), 's a slab inna esky, gonna be tuckah before ya ... <intelligible>.'

Just smile, nod and grab that beer that's being handed to you in 2... 1... there ya go.

Does it really matter if they use the proper word or not as long as it gets the target across?

No.

Ham Radio (Amateur Radio) operator here.

We too are to use the NATO phonetics. But often you run into people around the world where they were either...
A. not in the military
B. or if they were, they had different phonetics (Most of the world does not use NATO)
C. English is not their primary language.
(or some combination of all three)

So often you end up having to use something different to get folks to understand you. For example, my previous call sign had the letter J in it. Most of the world has trouble understanding "Juliet" for some reason, but say "Japan" and they would get it every single time.

Where I'm going with this... is that his is a video game. As long as people are using something mildly intuitive I don't really care, and neither should anyone else. (IE don't use "gnome" for G or N.... I've seen that done before)

I love how childish everyone is about this. Let's review some basic points:

1. All the players I play with are from NATO countries
2. No one uses these stupid and childish terms people suggest
3. This boy's club mentality only wrecks the game
4. No one is making y'all do anything
5. This is less trivial than the constant THESE MECHS ARE NERFED AND IM MAD posts I always see
6. I'm happy to say that the only reason I read this thread again past yesterday's boredom was because it popped up in my Google news feed and I was quite proud of that

TLDR: If you all don't care so much, why reply?

Sincerely,

Someone who wants players to get better instead of ***** but realizes that these forums are half trolls and half people who ***** about changes to game dynamics.

People saying they don't care what term someone uses as long as they understand the meaning are trolls?

I feel like you don't know what that word means.

You're missing the point entirely, it doesn't matter if all players you play with are from NATO countries (for as long as that organisation will exist seen the current political trens btw) There is an entire other part of the world that also plays this game and uses other alphabets. Being flexible is also a very important part in getting better odds for victory.

On the childish replies and posts,... welcome to the interwebs.

I'm in Belgium, the country where the NATO HQ is actually located.

And in our military we don't use the codes you've given ... because our national languages are French, Dutch and German.

And none of those english pronounciations make sense in our three languages.

So I'll continue to TRY to use the standardized vocabulary, but if no one understands me I'll switch to more colourful, easily understood terms.

You complain about people being childish while harping about how everyone should do things for your comfort? Yeah, not buying it. There's a bulge in the back of your pants, either you've got a generously sized stick up there or you're so full of it that you're overflowing.
