Panther if you want to poptart with a couple PPCs, Wolfhound if you want to use 6 MPL with an XL or 6 ML with an STD engine.

That depends on what you're looking for.

Raw capability I believe would go to the wolfhound due to the number of hardpoints. However, it feels larger across the front, and lacks jumpjets. It has a few drawbacks that keep it from true greatness, but it's functional in most roles.

The Panther is a scrappy underdog, concentrating firepower in a single, removable arm. If you like the idea of long range poking with a heavier alpha, you might be able to make the panther work. As it has jumpjets, it can go places the Wolfhound can't, and some variants get really heavy quirks. It's capable of racking up some nasty numbers, but it's less of a general purpose machine. It also feels like it has slightly better hitboxes, at least across the front, but you've got to protect that arm.

I think the final point I can make is that you can build the wolfhound to do what the panther does, but not as well as the panther might do it. You can't build the panther to be like the wolfhound, but it's better at being itself. If you redo your build frequently and modify for different roles, the wolfhound will take you further.

Both they are cheap. I got the panther and it is good. It will be even better when I add st nodes to it.

Xavier from MS swears by the Wolfhound. Since he is a great player, I would endorse the hound as well.

Hmm, I've thought about getting a Panther for awhile now. How does she compare with a dual PPC Adder?

tough call. I do better (or at least more consistent) in a Wolfhound.
I actually have more fun in a Panther.

So for me the Panther wins. YMMV.

Neither of them are really all that good. They both suffered heavily from the Rescale(by heavily, I mean "mistake them for a large medium" kind of heavily), both rely on high-heat energy weapons, and both require Mobility nodes to be effective.

I've enjoyed both.

My PNT-10K[R] was my favorite 'Mech for a while, and I had very good success using the 9R and 8Z as micro-brawlers with MPL/SRM... but all that was before the rescale. I have run the 10K since then, but with considerably less success, and I suspect that I just need to make some build tweaks, but it just doesn't feel the same as it did before. I haven't touched my other PNTs in ages.

My WLF-2[R] I have been running a good bit since rescale (actually, most of my matches in it came after rescale- like all my R2 'Mechs besides the Crab, it got shelved for a fairly long while), and it's been fun but definitely didn't feel strong like some other 'Mechs have. The hitboxes are okay-ish, but the shoulder pads (which still count as RT/LT, I think) prevent effective shielding with the otherwise very large arms. Lots of folks seem to think they work well with STD engines, but I can't bring myself to sacrifice that much tonnage on a light 'Mech. I tried it, but got better mileage out of a big XL.

So... my take is that both are fairly weak right now, but I would still recommend them because they're fun (and neither one has ever really been meta anyway). I also maintain that suboptimal lights are the best way to get better at the game, because you can't get away with taking stupid chances and making stupid mistakes the way you can in any of the apex 'Mechs, and therefore you quickly learn how not to be stupid. They teach good habits.

So, buy 'em. One of each, whichever variants suit your fancy.

The Wolfhound with the heat gen quirks was on my to-buy list.. and this sale got me to finally pull the trigger.

6 MDLAS with 14DHS, heat gen quirks and armor quirks is pretty nice.

It is entirely too large, since the rescale.. (and PGI assuming that all mechs have the same density of internal components.. they obviously haven't seen how tightly packed a 1980's Subaru is, under the hood.. nor how much free space there is inside of a 70's Impala.. I could literally get in there and stand next to my engine..) .. but those armor quirks help to counter PGI's shortsighted rescale BS.

--edit--

..derp.. I meant to say 15 DHS.

Panther has that certain appeal.

I've always liked the idea of slow lights armored lights that can pack on the firepower, and those jumpjets allow you to get into and out of places that the wolfhound has to rely upon pure speed for.

I guess it really depends on what you plan on doing with it. I am a lone wolf that likes to flank, poke and in general annoy everyone.

but if you are a team player who likes to follow the pack, probably the hound.

I like the Wolfhound -2 a lot. I run mine with 4 MLs + LPL-- Without JJs I don't want to get into a knife-fight with other lights, so I try to keep some range.

I don't have the Panther, but I imagine it plays a bit like the Phoenix Hawk, which I like a lot. A fast peep harasser is a lot of fun.

Wolfhound is faster, but lacks jets. Panther has the option for a few SRMs in your CT, which is not something to be overlooked.

This isn't even a contest. The wolfhound is better by quite a large margin.

The panther is the best looking light in the game though, i'll give it that.

I've got both a WLF-2 and a PNT-9R, enjoy and recommend both. They can both pack a decent amount of firepower and be made quite tanky.

I've also got a PNT-10P tho, that one I do not really recommend. It _almost_ works if you put an lb10 on it, but not quite :P
