Could we get an open desolate moon map sometime. Perhaps with plenty of deep craters perhaps, but no buildings.

With low gravity/no atmosphere that would make lurms less effective than usual?

Otherwise it would be a pure lurm map.

A low low gravity map would be fun either way though

I fail to see why missiles would be less effective.

I can however see a reason why ballistics with exception of gauss would be.

Really cool idea, I think thats what they were doing when they made vitric forge. Definitely not my favorite map as it doesn't really have that "whoa I'm in space" feel to it.

Not sure if it was because I was really young, but when I played this level I felt like I was legit in outer space. I agree though, It would be cool to have something like this in MWO.

(starts at 1:00 min)

No, you will get no new maps.... now go play HPG again, and again, and again....etc, etc....

Maneuvering fins need atmosphere to function at all, else the missiles will just fly up, forever.
Ballistics of all kinds would benefit as there is no air to slow the projectiles via friction and lower gravity means the rounds travel further before dropping.
Lasers would even benefit as there would be no air to diffuse the beam.
Basic physics.

If it had craters big enough to be a proper lrm cover and the like, a map like this would be awesome.

EDIT: I actually like polar highlands in general, it's just the voting that turns it into one-trick-pony lrm fest all the time.

I would actually buy a mechpack again if PGI brought us a no kidding Mech factory map that was almost all indoors with a moving assembly line, pouring metal, sparks to include partially completed mechs to completed mechs standing ready.

I'd like this. You could use some massive boulders (think crater ejecta, if you want to get scientific) for LRM cover.

A good thing would be that it should be relatively quick to do. I wouldn't mind at all if it used lots of old HPG art assets.

As far as gravity -- in the last town hall, Russ was adamant that they wouldn't explore variable gravity effects. IIRC would be hell to make it work with the engine.

static fins, maneuvers with engine.

Now as for ballistics, sure theyll fire just fine, but mech firing them will be sent flying as theres no gravity to keep it stable.
They would need to fire gyrojets and im not sure even that would keep some mechs stable.

As others have said, there's a risk of a Polar style map with a lunar surface, but daaaamn I'd love to see another vacuum map.

Vitric Forge and HPG are my favourite maps. Vitric in particular as with that star so prominent in the sky it really reinforces that you are in space in some futuristic environment.

well i guess they could take the attacker Side of Vitric Forge and double the size and have that as a moon map?
(and that area is defenantly not a LRM hot Zone, that Area has loads of Cover you can hide behind)

Every time I play Vitric, I keep silently wondering if that planet could even exist, with that blue giant so close. Some resident astrophysicist could probably do the math based on the apparent size and colour of the star.

Peak daytime surface temperatures on the actual moon approach 200 degrees Celsius. Its wrong to assume that a open lunarscape would mirror polar. I would expect more gauss and dakka.

Go tweet Neil dregrass tyson with the photo.. He LOVES to blow up stuff with Sci-facts. Sounds like he would know, and could very likely address it. (PS he is working on a space game too!)

OP,, and yea a lunar map has been my top want.. A cross between Polar and canyon would be fantastic, with a sprinkle of tourmaline for elevation changes.

last town hall russ talked about two... We had one less than a year ago, and the map updates for the two new modes was more likely more work than most people think..
