Seems like the Imperium banished the Tau from their Universe and sent them to BT.

Yeah, I see those more often.

I think the reason for it's rarity is just that it didn't sell well, it had neither the nostalgia factor of the classic designs or any expected impact on the metagame, also the hero isn't very good. So I think most people just thought it was one of those mechs that could wait until cbill release even if they liked everything about it. That's the way it is for me anyways.

I think it'll be a fairly common mech after cbill release, especially since the civil war tech will make single high mounted ballistic much more interesting than before with UAC20/10 and RAC5(if it's fixed to be useful). With that and great hitboxes it might be a sleeper that'll turn out really good.

I fully Agree with this.

The hero is not the best. They should have put the the ballistics on each shoulder and the lasers in the arms. That would have made it awesome and unique. As it is the main selling point is the UACs and they are to low to use.

I am seeing more and more not that they are in game for MC and I expect a big increases once C-Bill launch. I will miss the days of never facing one while I am piloting them.

Were people salty about the Hellspawn in MW4? Wasnt the Mad Cat Mk 2 also a MW4 design?

Now the Mad Cat 2 is a fan favorite.

I like the roughneck, will buy with cbucks

Also it is 100% canon now.

Apocryphal. Until the end of MWO-time. I highly doubt anyone plays those Mechs "stock" anyways in this game, let alone care about TT, so why do people put so much faith about 'canon' around here it's a MechBag to put weapons on.

PGI made it up, and Catalyst honorarily cannonized it as official BattleTech Universe content

It's honorarily Apocryphal according to those of us that contribute to Sarna regardless of what Catalyst or Randall Bill say. Like are we going to back and 'canonize' Mechs from other MW games? No, and MWO doesn't have any sort of magical special status compared to any other game.

So at what point is it canonized? If it appears in a TRO? The master unit list?

If the line developer comes out and clearly says it's a canonized mech (which Catalyst and the other line developers have not explicitly 100% stated at this point and time), to me, that makes it canon.

Why is everyone so uptight about mechs being customized. It makes complete since. These mechs are blown apart and scraped back together with salvage all the time. Do you really think they wouldn't strap an AC5 on a mech that had a AC20 on it to get it back in the fight? Do you really think they had a pile of exact spare parts laying around.

From a game play point of view lack of customization kills games. One of the main draws to MWO is that you can customize your mech. So get over it stop throwing lore books around that 90% of the rest of the player based dont care about. Lore is cool and all but guess what it can change and its not a bible to live by. Gameplay trumps lore or the the game goes under. Its been seen time and time again.

THe Imperium ripped off Shirow Masamune originally anyway.... from both his landmates and his artwork for Briareos.

So the fan-project Sarna now dictates canonicity regardless of the official developers statements?
While the canonicty of the Roughneck is a vexed question, that's certainly not how it's decided. For now I'll take Bills's statement that his fluff written for MWO is canonic, which includes the Roughneck.

They are canon by Sarna's own definition.

This.

Basically when PGI introduced it, everyone and their brothers, sisters, cousins, friend grabbed a pitch fork and a torch while their cousins, aunts, uncles, neighbor grabbed tar and feathers and all of them starting looking for Russ with haste. In order to prevent PGI from being burnt to the ground, the creator of the Battletech universe hastily canonized it in interest of world peace.

You know, this is why i find the BT community so grumpy some time. This thread made me take all of 5 mins to do a tiny bit of searching to find first appearances of mechs.

Guess what i found.. Many mechs had their first appearance in mech warrior games. Even more mechs had their first appearance in a novel.

I don't have a complete list, but i found 6 in just a few mins of searching so i'll go out on a limb that lots more were started this way. I'd guess novels might be the basis for so much of it, especially the classics and classic load outs that people are so found of, and those were written by writers, not the game makers.

So all these canonized/lore mechs were made up by someone, often not having anything to do with the table top, and many of them are mechs people have been asking for years for PGI to make/add to the game. But like all things, its' all good, but the line is drawn with PGI.

I've been holding off on a Roughneck until the new tech drops. I have plans for the 2A and the 3A. =)

This. The Roughneck is good and all, but now that I've played with it on the PTS, It's just not the same.

Btw, I consider myself a proud lorehead, so I get where you're coming from, but need I remind you that the Mad Cat MK2, which everyone seems to drooling about, is from a video game too? Fun Fact: It was being described as "clearly a Clan Omnimech"... Oh Karl. So new Mechs are not a new thing, they've all been at some point fabricated from someones mecha fantasy.

I just saw it was in today. I'm awaiting it to come up for cbills as well. I heavily debated buying it when it first came out, but my play amount is erratic. If they would do as I've seen suggested with the new skill system, and making just solo mechs available for purchase since we don't need 3 anymore, I probably would have bought one of the variants.
