It's because they put a gigantic mountain in the middle of the map which forces people to funnel down 1 ****** path or the other every time.

It's a complete joke of a map just because of that mountain and when they tried to improve the map a while ago they actually made it worse if anything.

I honestly like the old Forest Colony map more even though it was way too small.

I don't think we would be having this conversation to begin with if PGI just left all the old maps (Old Frozen City, Old Forest Colony, etc.) in the game.

This should be common sense, but common sense isn't exactly PGI's strong suit...

Except that the old maps were worse because they were way too small, and it's only really Forest Colony that was arguably made worse which was largely due to PGI blocking off a huge portion of the map.

The issue is PGI doesn't know how to make a variety of maps that are actually good.

Forrest Colony was to small - it was originally meant a 4 vs 4 beta-testmap that did stay ingame for 8 vs 8 combat and when 12 vs 12 came out it was impossible to move anywhere bcs you could pretty much shot from 1 end to the other end with gauss + erppc.
Yet they enlarged the map but did not achieve to spread out the fights over the map (many Areas to far off the way) and the foilage usually only hinders People that are to dumb or to decent not to tweak the **** out of some config files and with map voting it fell out of favour bcs long range ftw.

Conquest is the only good game mode anyway bcs at least sometimes the combat is spread and some objectives aside "Crash Boom Bang" make a difference - then Forrest Colony becomes somewhat better bcs most of the map finds a use.

Why isn't forest colony fun?

1) The visibility is atrocious, and alternative vision modes do not help

2) All battles happen at exactly the same spot - every time

3) It lacks an actual forest

4) it seems large, but it isn't.. there's alot of mountains and things in the way that take an awful lot of time to get around

5) Drop zones spread out too much

For me it's because of all the small trees. As we only have 2D vision through a single eye/camera in the game, objects are easily blocked or made difficult to make out among the terrain by relatively small objects such as trees.

A way to mitigate this problem would be to make small trees and other thin objects semi-translucent to simulate stereoscopic vision (as we humans have), that way larger objects could be seen "through" smaller objects as it should be.

Too many obstacles.
Trees block normal vision, heat and night vision don't have enough range to be of any use outside brawling/medium range.
Too much clutter on the ground (small rocks, tree stumps,...) which block your movement.

I think the most annoying thing are the invincible trees. They can tank more damage than any mech.
I've played with the idea of strapping trees on my mech instead of armor. Posted Image

it's because the gameflow is awful; as repetitive as most maps can be, they at least have 2-3 places where teams can go; this means combat happens naturally as the enemies find each other.

on forest colony there's really only one place that makes sense to fight: the archway in the center of the map. The water is too open to walk into willingly and the mountain tunnel is far too narrow for a whole team. Thus everyone sits at the archway and pokes.

Forest Colony is one of the more baffling maps.

Forest is fun period it's just that people these days young and middle aged are expecting things to be handed to them it's one of the negative effects of the digital age.

It's raining, I need an app so I can shop online, it's foggy, I need an app in my car to turn the head lights on, because I'm to lazy to flip a switch.

This is just the same kind of attitude gamers have.

Forest is according to many around here is a bad map, because there is brush and mist and all those things that they claim make it hard to use their l33t skillz.

Your lazy..

Bad eye sight..

I'm looking at three pairs of glasses as I type this.

Disabilities.

Without the drugs I'm taking daily, I can't get out a chair most days unaided, I can't use a keyboard and mouse it's to painful, only in the last year has my condition allowed me to use a mouse, for long enough periods to get any fine control.

Every map for me is difficult, and the more so, the better, because it's a challenge. the only thing you'll see me complaining about map wise is the lack of variety in playing them, because of the lazy people wanting everything optimal, layed out on a plate in easy mode.

People complain about there not being enough maps.
What is the point of P.G.I going to the expense of making them, if all you people are going to do is complain, unless they play, like all the dull boring ones like Canyon, H.P.G, Mining, with about two options, that funnel people into one spot.

You people won't be happy until they start making flat maps with childres building blocks for cover..so carry on complaining and reducing this game to dull tedium.

Forest doesn't suck because of mist, or bad sight lines, to too many trees, etc.
Forest sucks because of the layout combined with the stupid way they have the drop zones set up.

If your Assault lance is consistently dropped in the middle of the water farther away from all the other members of the team and your choices are go left all the way around to engage the inland water way after a 7 minute jaunt, go further around to the right and take 9 minutes to come up the beach and then move into the forest and the pass opening, or go to the closest combine point which just happens to be where your base, or the closest cap point is after a 4 minute hike?

People are naturally going to do the latter. Its the same thing on the other side, just easier: Go far right down the I9 river gorge then cut left, go around the mountain and cut right.

Either way, you end up in the same damn area with a mountain and the lake on one side and the stupid overhang and mountain pass on the other.

The map as designed, plus the stupid always the same drop points plop us down every time guarantees we all meet in the same place.

That then leave the whole battle to: try an use the skinny pass to try and flank around, try and use the water and islands to flank around or just push through and over that stupid overhang. Every battle ends up being a combination of these three very limited things.

THAT is why Forest sucks.
Its a big beautiful, varied map that guarantees the same damn match every f***ing time.
It isn't about visibility or people being whinny snowflakes. It is about predictability and boredom. It hurts more on this map because it is so big and varied and yet you cannot use or appreciate its potential because of where and how you are dropped.

Edit: I forgot another thing...it also sucks because fire proof trees being tougher than mechs and all of their weapons is stupid. Also no ewoks to squish.

I tend to agree here. Not all places IRL are optimal, not even in pretend shows or movies with battles do you see them in optimal situations always. Most often they MAKE FOR THEMSELVES the optimal situation, aka work as a team, find a good strategy, communicate. Those who complain they can't play their solo way, this is the wrong game for that.

I Personally enjoy different maps with different settings and different situations. We got a jungle, a forest, a moon base, a canyon, a factory, a desert, a crystalised location, a volcanic planet, a space port, a city, a cold place, and high mountains (that one is tedious because of its size though). Learn the maps, try new things.

Forest colony sucks because engagements mostly occur around the center stone hill/pillar which turns into repetitive nascar races in 8 out of 10 games.

Apart from that vision in that are of the map is terrible. You cant see anything. Instead of daily or weekly changing cap points or bases to completly other parts of the huge map, you continuously fight the nascar game among the damn bushes with no vision. Its pretty boring on that map. Pug teams need a solid tangible incentive to not run straight to the middle.

If thats not the case and center map is as boringly designed as eg old mordor or caustic or forest colony, games will always be meh on those mechs. Very repetitive. Nascar train. Sniping pretty much impossible in a lot of or most scenarios on forest not because map is tiny but because vision is terrible.major drawback is also that you are almost forced to use thermal vision on forest which lets my rig struggel and stutter even though my system is supposed to be more than strong enough and massively exceeds optimal system requirements.

Same with night maps. If i engage thermal vision and lots of lrms fly around (which happens all the time) my fps dies. Never without thermal. But with thermal it gets bad. And i hate bad fps more than anything. It kills the fun when game doesnt run completly smoothly.

Those are the major reasons most ppl wont vote for forest colony. Beyond reason to not bring back old forest colony which was a great map. But thats typical for pgi. They mostly disagree or if they want to change something it literally takes years. Like many years

I agreed with everything untill you called canyon, hpg and mining boring maps...

Seriously, just don't be a sheep and blindly follow the herd. Keep your eyes open and take advantage of the moments where you can get the upper hand on the enemy by doing something out of the ordinary and unexpected.

People are so stuck in their ways that any small change totally catches them off balance sometimes.

I enjoy forrest colony, think it brings a sence of a real enviroment to mwo that the other maps lack. Fighting is usually centralized in one area because it is some of the best terrain to fight on in the whole map.. its natural for people to go there first.

It isn't conditioning if a majority of the game modes including conquest center pretty much around a central point.

No they actually don't, only Domination (fixed point) and Escort (moving point) do.
Domination, I am actually thankful for Forest Dom since people from both team will actually GET IN THE CIRCLE due to cover compared to Grim or Frozen where you get dropped on teams that refuse to enter leaving 1-2 poor souls holding the point to die from a bum rush.

They need to put a string of hills in the middle area instead of just one. This would give cover to both teams and allow for smaller fights separated from each other.

I would say take all that new high unclimbable / unjumpable terrain and lower it.
