I'm thinking I want to try and get into a Unit, how does one go about looking for a active unit that takes newcommers?

there are many recruitment threads in the Faction Play forum
I strongly recomend learning a bit about the unit before joining, you want to find out;
What faction they are (in your case you have a perminant contract with Clan Wolf, to change to another faction would cause a 1 week period in which you are unable to earn faction reputation, you will also loose 25% of the earned Clan Wolf reputation points).
when they drop (no use if you only join in the north americian evening time joining a unit active in the European or Australian evenings)
if they have a code of conduct is it acceptable
do they accept and train up newcomers.

Just to throw in a quick advert for my unit, we a mercinary coorporation and usualy go with the highest bidder, are mostly NA, with the Americian evening times being our buissiest times on comms with maybe a dozen each in UK/EU and AUS, we have a training program for new members to complete which make sure you have the basic skills and knowledge to do well, our code of conduct is PG comms (except for a few non PG rooms) and basic honourable conduct, if you are interested a link is in my signityre

Gotta say, new players are very lucky to have Koniving, Tesunie (not in this thread yet) and Rogue Jedi around to provide help. They are there, each time, every time, and what's more, they actually know what they are talking about. It's a bit heart warming to see them at it, when you've lost all faith in the community/pgi/mwo/santa claus.

I guess that just means I need to upgrade to double heat sinks for my heart.

I will be leaving the clan today, I saw that there is a hit if you leave which is fine, as I don't think I will be doing much of that just yet as I don't have the mechs, skills and know how of everything yet..I had just looked at the big map...and that was very scary just to say the least of the hundreds? of planets and the fact that looks like the clanners are getting pushed back? and the Inner Sphere is winning the war? I would like to join your unit Jedi, if possible.

it goes through phases, while many say it is because 1 has an advantage over the other my opinion is it is usualy when the bulk of the "elite" units in faction play end up on one side that the borders change significantly.
on paper Clan tech is better, it is usualy 2 of the following, lighter, does more damage per shot, longer range.
This is balenced by making Clan Tech hotter and longer duration.
I think balence is pretty close right now but that is likely to change with all the new weapons and equipment coming later today.

if you want to join the Praetorian Legion first I sugest reading the PL code (of conduct) to make sure that is acceptable to you, then visiting the Recrutment page and if you are still interested fill in an application.
if you send me a PM on the MWO forums when you have put in the application I am pretty sure I can approve the application (if it turns out I cannot I will message someone who I know can and ask them to put it through ASAP) then we can get you on teamspeak so you can start dropping with other members.

We do require people to finish training before sending them an ingame unit invite, mostly due to the 50,000 cbills for each current member recruitment fee (meaning 5 million cbills to invite someone if you already have have 100 members and I think we are at about 100 at current) and with you currently a Wolf Loyest who has not yet left it would be a week before you could accept an ingame invite anyway.

Alotta mercenaries've been going IS in preperation for the new tech dropping since the IS get alotta fun toys. My unit in fact switched to clans again in hopes of getting more matches against skilled opponents.

As for joining [PL], I respect that decision. I've alotta things to say about many a unit, but the only criticism I have for the Praetorian Legion is 'I haven't gotten to fight them enough'. A now we're on the same side...

You may want to just play for a while before jumping in a unit. There's a certain loss of freedom and gaming experience when you do.

Sounds actually like the OP's fine with that., as there's more gaming experience to be had in a unit as well, and if that's what they want, more power to 'em. Hope to see you on the battlefield Chulain. <o.

Correct while I am getting some experience first hand on my set up, I'd rather try to get info from ones that have and know what to do with the mech and go off that and tweak it if I don't like it. Plus running solo sometimes does get lonely! A lone wolf maybe a warrior, but it takes a pack of wolves to bring the enemy down faster, smarter and deadlier than one warrior could.

Might help if you shared how to get on the Comstar teamspeak; lots of new players undoubtedly would find public teamspeaks dedicated to MWO very useful.
