It has only lost any respectful meaning if that is how you choose to take it. What meaning it holds is the meaning you choose to give it. While I have never been a fan of abbreviated statements and all the other silly nonsense people have come up with to represent words due to character limits on things like twitter etc. it is still on me if I read too much or too little into what someone else has said.

On a similar note I will never forget the conversation I had one time discussing this symbol <3. I had someone ask why people kept calling him an @sshat and as such I was rather confused because I had always seen it as a heart.

you mean it's not a double scoop ice cream cone??????

That's a really terrible analogy. This is a video game, not life-and-death.

It's a great analogy actually...because it shows how out of touch with reality so many people's perspective on life is.

Sadly the people who need to understand that are the ones who won't.

Nah.

Anyone on the winning team that says GG before someone on the losing team does is completely crass. I'll throw a GG but only to reciprocate one from someone on the losing team.

It has nothing to do with other people getting mad over videogames, but rather the fact that if you really respect your opponent you should let them leave on their own terms rather than just spamming a meaningless acroynym- whether the people on the losing end actually had fun or not.

Even if you're ultra casual you should recognize that games often aren't "good", and suggesting they were is at best just a meaningless, empty gesture that devalues the sentiment shared on legitimately close, exciting games.

Your examples isn't the same thing and you know it. First, gestures or greetings face to face are very different than just seeing text in a chat, second, GG is hardly as well established as holding a door open.

Sigh!

For the last 7 pages (and counting) we have been telling people exactly what we mean when we say "gg". And yet, the impression I am getting is that a number are refusing to accept it. <smh>

Reading this I don't even know what to think...

After a game saying GG can mean many things sure, I said it all the time, even games 12-0 and 0-12 games so do others. GG can be taken anyway you want but when you reply FU, what does FU as a reply mean other than the obvious?

How does me saying GG in a game that I had a good time in comparable to walking through a hospital saying "good day" to everyone? NTM why would I do that, or say it to people who are visually distraught from the loss of a loved one or a injury. When I was in the hospital after I got a broken leg the doctor walked in and said "Good Morning, how are you feeling?" and I said good morning back because its not a sneer remark. When I walk down the street if I pass someone I always say "Good Afternoon" unless they're in a conversation and they say it back.

If you dislike someone saying GG after a game no matter how it goes maybe the internet isn't for you as every game I play no matter how bad a game goes for me and my team or the enemy team I almost always say GG and whether or not you think its a 'review' or not it is a symbol of good sportsmanship.

Funny thing, you can make a million phrases sound like sneer-ish remarks just by describing it differently.

I'm going to ask you the same thing. Maybe this time around someone actually gets the exact context:

Saying Good Game for those Stomps is at best disingenuous (was steamrolling the other team really a good game or a yawnfest made possible by Match Maker or if you really want to shine them on add "close"). It's so over used, dull and open to interpretation.

On the flip side it's tame compared to the vitriol spewed daily in game. I'd rather ignore a typed "GG" then a rant on comms about how everyone else sucks, etc.

I think everything that can be said about this has been said. :)

Probably people at work posting from their office computers/phones, or maybe due to the fact that it might be a current reflection of the game and the boredom of repetition that goes along with it? I agree it's kind of unusual that something like this is getting so much attention and responses.

Darn near any time one of the "/" or "\" versions is used, the "Is that a [Godwin's Law] salute?" pops up in chat. It would be funny, if it wasn't so... nah, it's still funny.

Truth be told, I make far worse faces to friends and generally mean it in a good manner (there are always exceptions).

It took me quite a while to learn that I shouldn't get butt-hurt over a bad match, instead I try to use it as a learning experience. For quite a few players this is not the case however. I will certainly yell at my team mates for doing really dumb things, or for putting LRMs on assaults, or generally blocking me in and shooting me more than the enemy team.

With that said, GG after a match is acknowledgement to the opposing team, they didn't play like Tier 6 floatsam and actually put me "On my game" as it were, even if it's a 12-0. If YOU had a terrible time then by all means don't give the GG, but at least try to take a loss as a learning experience and try to adapt your game play for the next match.

Usually only say gg when someone gets annoyed when someone else says it. But looking at some of these comments I'll have to ggez like half the player base in 12-0s for being safe space qq tweenies
