PGI had been collecting data for the Tier system months before it released, so a lot of people started at Tier 1 with bar set to full.

Any multiplayer game is going to have some degree of competitiveness associated with it. Its human nature, this naturally leads to players stressing out when they lose or don't play well, or have to react faster than they want to. Its a real time multiplayer game, so people who react faster are, in general, going to have the upper hand. If you are really looking for a slower pace sim to relax and just 'mech out, you will have to wait for MechWarrior 5.

Keep the current stuff as T5-T4, then steadily and ruthlessly increase the requirements for 3,2,and 1. T1 should be a constant, extraordinary effort to maintain in an actual ranking system, vs. the exp bar we have now.

OR jump on board with HBS for the time being. Until MW5 come out....
Sounds like OP just dont like multiplayer games, no issue there. I play lots of single player stuff because i agree it is less stressful.

Not true. I started playing MWO since it was in Alpha. If this was true, I would myself seen me in Teir 1 or lowest in Teir 3. I thought Teir 5 was the highest best rank, then realize it is the start of all things.

I said months, not years. That is definitely true as I was fully maxed in Tier 1 when the PSR system dropped. They also explicitly announced that they had been collecting data. Someone can correct me but it was either at the start of 2015 or 2016 where they started taking the data and then PSR dropped about 6 months later or so.
You either weren't playing that much in those ~6 months where they were collecting data, or you weren't playing that well *shrugs*

Players started showing (posting images) their teirs after a week. "What teir are you now?". Thinking they prob photo-shopped those. I played every night, when I could. It is to bad I am employed. To go up rank, you have to play 12+ hours a day or night. Those who have jobs have no chance. I did play just to have fun, but ended up lower. Get me alone one on one, I kick butt. On a team, I try, and I suck. I never blame my team mates, like those who do a lot. I am trying now (for the last few months) my hardest, and I find very frustrating, unhealthy. That I end up yelling at family members "leave me alone!!" because I was on a losing team, I suck, and feeling annoyed and fustrated. Not good anymore like I thought I was. Any new player starts MWO today, will not last a day, and will uninstall right away.

I used to think that a lot, and I ended up going down. Although when on Teir 3, had Teir 5 players on my team. I was confused. But I never see Teir 1 players on lower teirs levels.

All that's missing.
PSR was decent for several months after it dropped. But then everyone levelled up. I swear, I see more teammates running from the fight than pushing against it. And I don't mean tactical retreats to get position. I mean literal cowering I to a tight ball just begging to get surrounded.
That's my que to exit stage left with a YOLO.

Lucky, because I see T4's in games with T1's all the time. They just don't tend to say much about it, knowing tier is just an exp bar.

no thanks it would take forever to find matches then
the only purpose of the tier system is to keep completely new players from having to play experienced players
thats the only reason it exists and it performs that task admirably. tier 5s will never play against tier 2 or tier 1 players.
its not a comp ladder, thats not the purpose of it. its just there to improve the new player experience so you ******* with LPL and AC5s and CGauss/CERPPC dont completely chase away every new player that joins the game.
thats what comp play is for, go play that if you need to grow your epeens, but dont !@#4 with my queue times by segregating the player base into more buckets that will take forever for matchmaker to fill.

Given how often the matchmaker bleeds T4's into matches with T1s, I'd say they could have had two tiers and made it work as well as it does now.
Especially considering that post-cadet bonus, getting seal clubbed is inevitable.

that shouldnt ever happen unless its like super late at night and theres no players on and it blows a release valve to allow that. but in that situation its better to just allow the T4 in the game because starting a game is better than waiting longer.
most of the time the tier system does what its supposed to. it keeps newer players from being trashed by experienced players. thats all it was ever really intended to do.
tier 1 wasnt ever supposed to mean anything other than you shouldnt be playing against tier 4s and 5s.
if you want to feel special about how good you are, go do comp play. but keep that crap out of quickplay.

The tier rating, however, needs to be relative to the performance of the player base. It needs to orient itself on e.g. the average match score of the best and on the worst player (in the most simple case). In this range, the tiers have to be set by dividing the range of scoring into brackets.
The tier rating should be calculated from 50% the performance in the current season a nd 50% of the season before. That would make the tier rating much more flexible.

No, I'm not a great pilot. I'm a French fry. But I sometimes have ketchup spiked with cayenne pepper.
By the way, those who claim T1s don't use LRMs aren't being honest. The cake is a LIE. There are more LRMs in QP now than ever before. And in FP too. Used by the Clans. Some of them are ATMs, I'm sure.

I'd say between the very bottom and very top, the tier separation in MM still works pretty well. It was a mostly different bunch of people in those low-tier games (with the current population, you start to remember lots of names). Also in my regular games I really don't see those distinct Tier 5 behaviours too much. However demented they might play, they generally can move and shoot at the same time etc.
I'm guessing tier doesn't matter much once you get to 3 and above. I doubt we have the population to set up strict Tier 1 games, so the "high level" games are likely ~always Tier 1-3.
