You know, i see this all the time. People say they want to increase the player pop, or say the player base is dropping, or there is not enough advertising ect..

Ive been watching steam numbers for a while now and right now for example, there are around 1750 people playing on steam alone.. If what they say is about right, that MWO client has at least as many if not more, that is 3-4k players at prime time.

Now, i also watch steam top 100's, and you know what.. games that have peaks around 3-4k, and dips to about 2-2.5k make the top 100 all the time.

What do many players think of as good games? If you said steam top 100 then you would be right. I know i often check that to see what games people are playing, and often put them on my radar to try. There are millions of players out there, If they saw this game popping up all the time, or on weekend i'd have to think more players wouldn't be so worried about player pops, and maybe it would bring in more folks.

Steam is super easy to use, and it's free, and does not slow down the performance at all. So why not get more people using that platform. Communities, and word of mouth often are what makes games grow. Why not try to be part of the solution?

some people like to use the Portal, i do,

also MWO isnt that far down on Steams list,
1) go to Steam Store,
2) mouse over Games, click Free to Play,
3) click Top Sellers,
4) go to the Bottom, click Browse All Top Sellers,
5) on the Right, side click Games(this will hide DLCs)
6) go to the Bottom, click Page2,
7) you will notice MWO on the Bottom of Page2,

their are 25Games per Page,
so MWO is the 50th Most Popular, Top Selling Free to Play Game on Steam,

So... Steam and portal players are segregated?... I thought it wad just a launch param or perhaps pricing point differentiation.

I do use Steam. I hear some people look down on it though for whatever reason. Only had 2 problems with it during the last decade of using it.

Steam and portal players play on the same servers but portal players don't show on the steam who's playing. I commonly check the steam top 100 to find games that look interesting and aren't dead.

Just like I thought. So it doesn't matter which client you play on in terms of access to population, it's just different launcher with inbuilt store and friend system.

Am I missing point of OP then because other than speculating on total player numbers then???

Targato once estimated about 70% of total players use steam. The ones who are still using separated launcher are now minority.

Not sure what that means though. It could mean it sells or it could be like the recent leaderboard event For the Kin Wolf. #1 scored 3245 and #50 scored 198. #50 isn't really that hot in that perspective, pretty much just showing up and participating.

Now if you have actual sales numbers or a measure for comparison then the numbers would have perspective.

Maybe.. the whole idea is to keep the game in the top 100 more, meaning more peoples eyes see it.. Top 100 over all, and top 50 FTP are two different things.

It was just a thought..

That Russ's saying was really, really a long time ago.

Plus : And the fact that...

- A couple of years ago more people used the game launcher rather than Steam, not currently it is reversed.
- The population has been steady decline, with recent sharp decline after Civil War Tech.

It means a lot of people who used the game launcher have quit the game, and they never returned to the game via steam. Which also means.... the player retention rate of this game is dismal.

Wasn't that long ago. Russ said on his Twitter on Aug-18/19-2017 the Steam portion is a minority.

After switching to Steam I had much less launch issues, or disconnects. Steam only, for me.

well the top 6 games are,
1) Path of Exile,
2) Warframe,
3) Team Fortress 2,
4) Smite,
5) Warthunder, &
6) Dota,
so it seems like a mix of most popular and higher grossing,
i cant imagin TF2 & Dota are making as much as Warframe and Warthunder,

also (at the time of this post) MWO is higher on the list than,
EVE, MapleStory, RIFT, theOrangeBox, Defiance, Duelist,

That's very interesting actually. (Kind of painful that we just cannot believe Russ's words as it is...) If Russ is not lying to us, then the population that playing FW is far smaller than we anticipated.... If FW is gone tomorrow, no one may notice that.

why would Russ lie to us? what benefit would it be to him?

how would you figure that the FW pop would have to be smaller if their are less Steam players then Portal Players?

The point is if everyone only used STEAM for their MWO launcher the number of active players STEAM could report as playing MWo would be accurate and higher than they list currently because MWo portal does not log active users with steam.

So if 1780 players are using steam and another 1500 players are using the portal launcher there would (obviously) be 3280 users online. But since steam can't log portal users it can not report nearly half the actual players so MWo's player numbers appear to be significantly lower to steam reports.

One thing that troubles me is there is no way to buy MC on Steam. I have money in my Steam wallet I'd gladly spend on this game, but ohwell.

PTS access is another reason (when it's open). While I have a fairly large Steam library, I've had good success through the launcher (patching, repair, stability) and just don't feel compelled to swap over.
