It seams like if i am in the top 3 scores on the team, i win more often than not. Maybe because i am over performing my rating?
That is a good metric to use and if you are "producing" then the team has a good opportunity at winning.... What many fail to realize is that "support players" rarely get in the top three........we count success by assists and saves...... I work for 8 or more assists every game..... That can be 150 to 500 damage but, rarely more than 500... We have several support players on our team and we aren't the brawling killers that average 800 to 1200 per match. We exist behind the FLOT and do what we can. That is our role.
I wonder how many players fail to see that? We are the potato's because we don't brawl, don't produce large damage, don't produce kills and yet, consistently produce damage that allows the brawling killers an easier time.......
How would we brag? I've had several 12 assist matches.... Came close to 1000 damage once. Had seven kills as a support mech once...........
I agree with the author of the quote.......if I am the top in assists, that increases our liklihood of a win.......

Well certain mechs don't always bring in high scores.. for me Lights and AC20 mechs i tend to have a bit lower score, but if i am pulling kills in them, i call that a higher rating/score. 300 damage and 4 kills because you hit the right spot is often better than 500-600 damage you know?

As someone who's piloting a Supernova-A right now, I generally want to smack assaults like that. Odds are, hiding in the back made his accuracy so bad he likely cost his team a good chunk of the game, not to mention the whole "take some damage" bit.

You found what you work well with? Don't feel bad at all, mobility and a smaller profile may just be what you require.

At that point, I just sit back, chill, do my best while watching the fields get reaped.

High damage and low kills doesn't always mean inefficient, KMDD's and assists tell that tale. I often don't get to secure my KMDD's and that's ok, the win is more important to me. I just try to keep giving my teamates as favorable conditions, and as many opportunities to easily put baddies down as I can. It seems to help in Puglandia.

Don't feel bad over the on and off 3 + years I've been able to access MWO (from running at 15 FPS on a **** laptop, going without a PC for months on end from time to time etc: to finally having a beast comp and time to sink) I've logged about 500+ hours in the game and that's just on the steam client. So probably closer to 6-7. Anyway point being im still top of tier 3 in ranks and my matches go from "oh my god i did poorly" all the way up to " PIWT)*(&TYOI TYES!!!! YES!! THAT WAS AMAZING!"
ohh man I thought I was the only one suffering at 15fps these days. lol.

I would define "carry" as contributing the bulk of the actions contributing to the victory. And this is not limited to damage delt and kills made.
I have brought about the conditions that gained my team victory without making a single kill. But without my direct contribution the likely out come would not have been favorable.
IE. Match on Polar a few days back had the enemy with a pair of aggressive lights (one with NARC) and a Supernova LRM boat with 80 missile tubes.
No mater how much I tried to convince the team to push they would just stay in cover being picked apart by LRMs and getting NARCed. Nothing got them to believe me that a charge would end the missile stalemate.
So I took my little commando hero and shot the NARC off the enemy Raven legged him and scooted to cut into the rear lines and took out the left side of the Supernova and placed a UAV up over the enemy. My team's LRMs took the Supernova out and after I placed my second UAV up a second and third enemy succumbed to LRMs.
4 kills my team got that would not have happened if I didn't get the ball rolling triggered the tipping point to allow a win.
I carried that match and killed nothing.

If you position well within your team in a smaller 'mech -- don't offer yourself as the lone target -- I find you don't get focused as much.
Thinking about how I play myself -- if I see a barndoor assault where I can reliably hit a specific torso section, I'll shoot it instead of the Urbie next to it.

Many of us will have that feeling. And if you effort to carry a team, you are doing it right.
However, carrying doesn't mean having the high score. How often have I not kept 4 enemies busy so my team could roll over the rest, how often did I not die with minimal score but again lured half the enemy team away. And of course, sometimes you just rule over all other 23 puglets and end with godly match scores. The lurm-cowards (distinct from lurmers that join in fights), the bad-snipers (distinct from those that actually contribute to anything else but their matchscore) and other similar players might end up with super scores and feel they carried but will essentially have done just the opposite. In the end however, it doesn't matter, as long as you play to the best of your ability and contributed wisely you can feel good about a match. It is still an online shooter. The randomness defines the experience. With or without MM.
TL;DR
Don't look at top X scores and feel bad that you lost while carrying. Just carry and enjoy the game.

I mean heck, a few games before I was the one carrying:
And sometimes I even just try to carry but you're just not fast enough to catch up with the guys playing "stand on the square":
But that's OK. At least I know the other team had to flee me rather than fight (sensibly, I kept murdering them) to win. That's a consolation prize. But there's usually only so many under-200s you can compensate for.
1100 damage only 1 solo kill 3 KMDD, sorry but all you did was spreading damage thats not the way how one "carries" The raven, wahrammer and mad mostly did a similar effective "carry" as you did except they didn't spread damage so much. Also, you even lost so thats just not even carried hard enough.

Seriously? Some of us are retired old horse soldiers wipper-snapper.... New players we want to keep....eh?!
That was the most fun I've ever had....
It's a game......enjoy it and be silly............
the reason it was fun is because when everyone si potatoe it is simply a proper and fair matchup. But with one or 2 guys not beeing potates there goes the fun because potatoes pop without having fun and these guys probably don't have much fun as well (unless they like bragging about lolly stealing nujmbers on the win screen)
The most fun games are those where equal people meet thats why havign a proepr rating and MM is important and used or tried to be used properly across many games.

Personally, I more often than not, consistently pull 800dmg / 4+ kills when I am in my best mechs. My best builds. So if I try to play anything else, I just can't pull those kind of numbers.
Unfortunately, this is just how MM works. I don't think a per mech MMR rating would really be appropriate, theres just too much variation. Even with different builds on the same mech. If a player is that good, MM should expect them to carry, its only logical.
IMO, the real problem here is balance. The fact that my best builds/mechs so outperform all my other mechs. MM will never be able to balance anything when there is such variation in build strength. In a perfect world, the mechs/builds I have lots of experience with, should definitely allow me to preform better by taking them. But, by like 10-20%, not the 50-100% I am seeing on my stats screen, and on the data that I gathered for the Mech Stats excel sheet project I did a few weeks ago.

I take it that's over 2 games or CW, since you can't get an assist on someone you kill...For the OP, don't know about carry, but I definitely feel as if I don't perform at a level consistent with my best mechs, my chances drop noticeably.
Perhaps that's what the MM looks for though. You gain tiers based on your play in your 'best' mechs, but it never gets adjusted when you're in a different class.

In FW however I have to really hustle just to get some kills. I'm getting carries in FW, no question.

Two different games, by the way. Two of the kills on the first one were finishing shots- I ended up with one solo kill + KMDD, a second killshot + KMDD, two straight up KMDDs without the killshot, and two finishing hits. (Mostly on targets that were already mauling someone else, thus the 6 savior kills). Figure about 200 damage per KMDD, so that was about 800 damage right there. I'd have had 5-6 kills for not much more damage, but I was too busy clearing turrets at the end because the last few decided to hide in their base.
Turrets still killed two of our team. Turrets OP,we still won.
The second game, the enemy Marauder was a stick early on and hid, the Urbie just had a higher ground speed and ran...and yes, hid one salvo away from being crippled or dead. Otherwise, it'd have been an easy six-kill game. Standing in squares and running away FTW is OP, too, beats my best carrypower in a 61kph assault.

So Chances are nine out of ten players feel like they have to carry everyone up Mt. Tryhard, because they're sooooo elite at the game. :Dc
Most of the time your winning or loosing depends on how many of the opposing team compared to your team thinks they can carry harder and decide to rush in. Critical mass of poor decisions on either side.
