yeah thats not the problem. the fact people actually care that pewdiepie used the n-word is the problem. seriously who cares?
the problem isnt player toxicity. its all the f*cking whiny crybabies that get constantly triggered by every little thing and cant handle it when someone is mean to them.
theyre the ones constantly complaining to devs and wasting everyones time. and sadly its not just game culture theyve screwed up, its real life too.

In all seriousness though the salt in this game is mild in comparison to other multiplayer games. We tend to use the word potato as a catch all description for players that are less skilled. Compared to the other terms you see flying around on other games? Potato is pretty darn mild.
I agree - the salt in this game is minor compared to other games, although in my experience, World of Warships is *slightly* less toxic, but that's only my experience. I don't play "hard-core" modes in either game; just normal, mid-tier PvP. But, again, compared to utter cesspools of human behavior like Eve or Dota 2, this place (and WoWS) is paradise.

Of course the internet is a mean place. That doesn't excuse people for being mean.
And please, keep the strawmanning to a minimum. The Big Bad Government isn't coming for your internet insult range.

I think you're missing the point. If somebody threatens to "kill me" every game or some crap and I decide not to play with him anymore, it's not because I "can't handle it" or "am scared of him."
No, I walk away from morons like that because he's a pathetic loser, and why should I waste my time hanging out with losers? In most cases, internet nutjobs that fly off the handle about video games are, themselves, terrible players or otherwise no fun to be around in game (or often out of the game), so why bother? Even if you can "handle them," they simply aren't worth your time and generally diminish the fun in a game because of their malice and incompetence.
I've seen too much of this backlash against "political correctness" and civilized behavior in general these days, where people think being an arsehat is now some measure of one's "manhood" and that one should be guaranteed an audience and freedom from consequences when being an arseclown and spewing violence or bigotry. It doesn't work that way. "Real men" - whatever that even means - don't need to spew insults and violence, particularly over a game, to prove themselves, and nobody is guaranteed an audience or freedom of consequences for being a jerk.

Nice try, but no. There is NO justification for being an arseclown on the internet or anywhere else. Sorry that people are "wasting your time" if they moderate the idiots, but they deserve it. You are not guaranteed immunity to consequences for being a jerk - you just can't be put in prison for spewing stupidity, and that's it.

Who, exactly, is wasting your time? And why is it that only insults are allowed? Why are they special things that can be shrugged off, but criticisms of a persons behavior are suddenly a no-go, a 'waste of time,' something people should just shut up about?

There isn't. It IS pretty tame.
I wonder if thats because MWO people are just generally nicer, or if, for some reason, the amount of people willing to actually use comms is so low there's almost no reason TO be toxic.

The players of this game have matured over time and that makes the repetitive nature of the gameplay and various related frustrations much more bearable.
So despite the wildly varying skill levels and utter tactical incompetence I see on the battlefield that makes me want to scream sometimes, the actual character of most mechwarriors I play with is first rate, so I try to follow their example, stifle whatever rant is building in my chest and move on peacefully and happily to the next exciting PUG match.

Yes, there is a matches of try-hard which goes down in 8-12, but when you got a controlable situation when suddenly people decide to group-up on the "flank-map" and manage to die in 2-12/0-12 the "F-words" actually are the most polite measure to do instead.... Instead find those autists and r4p3 their hamster.

As someone who has been banned twice for 'toxic behaviour' or as it should be called 'swearing at cheaters' I'm in agreement with Khobai, a level of HTFU is required, we're all (at least 90%+ I guess) 30/40/50+ adult males and should be able to handle some profanity without breaking into tears.
This game doesn't have a profanity filter for the in game chat, a profanity filter is a really basic level of coding and something that pretty much _every_ other game has. Yet after 5 years PGI are wasting time chasing down people who call other people names rather than programming in a simple chat filter.
