The only real niche they could be used in is for mechs with anemic energy hp's with ton of spare tonnage laying around.

High damage per laser, variable damage and heat so you can drop down to another 'bracket' when heats tight but you still need to respond.
Lets do it, PGI. Are you brave enough to add the powerful, effective, smart, and handsome Bombast Laser?

Just change the canon of the cannon up to 18 damage

If PGI could do variable damage they'd have done ammo swapping for LBX, though, right? A neat idea, otherwise, though.

Has to be at least 2 on the GH group. Cannot be 1, or it's DoA. Even at 2, it's DoA unless the damage is at least 16.
Similarly, the damage being 18 is going to require something to offset it so you don't always take 1x BLC instead of 2x LL. Slightly longer beam duration (1.25 s?) or less heat efficiency or, gasp, longer cool-down. Something. Damage at 16, doesn't require anything to offset it since 2x LL does more damage than 1x BLC.
And really, GH group should be 3. The size and weight prevent it from becoming OP even if you take three and some ERML.
