SPL and SL are both in need of buffs.
PGI nerfed both IS-SPL and IS-SL for god knows what reason.
C-SPL case is more extreme, since there is no alternative laser that can replace it effectively. PGI heavily nerfed the C-ERSLs in september
I don't know that I'd agree with the implication that there was a laser to replace SPL and SL, especially since it seems like neither was ever much of a thing to begin with. And while I agree the change to cSPL was more extreme, the lack of performance on the SPL and SL is more extreme still.
I honestly find it hard to talk about the cSPL alone because it was the performance of the cSPL over those other two that got it over-nerfed in the first place, and it was the under-performance of the SL that got the SPL a nerf it didn't deserve even a little bit.

IS mechs have the same base armor values as their clan counterparts... eg. both the Rifleman and Mad Dog have a max armor of 402.
And yes, IS mechs do indeed need armor quirks to survive. They have less range, heavier weapons and less alpha potential, heavier engines and bulkier heat sinks. Heck even their armor is heavier.

Spider
• All Structure Quirks have been converted into Armor Quirks.
• Spider SDR-5D: Armor Bonus has been increased to match other variants.
Spider Design Notes: With some of the recent Light changes we feel the Spider has been sidelined a bit in favor of newer 'Mechs with more Hardpoints. We want to ensure that the Spider retains its own unique style compared to the other 'Mechs within its Weight Class, given its Hardpoint restrictions. A heavy focus on top-of-the-line Mobility, coupled with high durability, means that while the Spider doesn't carry the largest degree of firepower, it does boast unrivaled sustainability among the range of 'Mechs that can exceed 100 KPH.
nice to see the spider gets some love, but the problems are deeper than just a change from structure to armor quirks can fix.
first of, they need more armor to begin with. times have changed and the newer weapons just hit like a container of bricks.
5K needs the energy cooldown on a similar level than it had before the skill tree, because as it is now, its absolutely worse than its locust counterpart with similar hardpoints.
giving the 5D the same quirks as the other variants is nice, but makes it even more of an obvious choice, further reducing any reason to choose another variant and thus reducing even more of variety on the battlefield.
actually, you can scratch that last part with the battlefield variety, since there are no spiders on the battlefield to begin with.

I've seen like three of them in the past two weeks, so yeah I'd say that statement is about correct as it can be.

not sure if that is sarcasm or not ^^'
the only people even considering to pilot spiders are either nostaliga fans looking for a challenge or maniacs like myself (which, if i think about it, is the same thing because i love the spider 5K and anansi, being my first played mech and first hero mech bought respectively)

It wasn't sarcasm.
Tbh I love my 5k but there are just better mechs for earning cbills for my never ending mechlab hobby.
