You'll notice that they rarely say what kind of damage they're doing. Perhaps they're doing 400 damage to the enemy, and 200 team damage.

I've long suspected that most "I do X average damage!" people aren't actually using the proper calculation. They just remember a handful of good matches they had and call that "average."

Hint: The real way to do it is to go to your profile, add up all your damage on a variant, divide it by total matches played.

I have a theory. In fact, I'm 99% sure I'm correct.

They don't stick around in matches where they die, instead ditching the match and starting another game. As such, they never see they're bad game scoreboards, only the good ones where they lived. And then they just forget about the games they never finished.

One can see how that could twists someones perception of how things are going.

people only remember their good games. those 12 damage games on the other hand tend to be forgotten rather quickly.

i dont think i own a single mech that can consistently get 600. i did 1300 in my ultraviolet a few times, but usually im pulling in 300-400 with it, and ive had several '12 damage' games. 1200 damge is a good score in fp dispite the players who say you need to break 2k every match before you belong there. the players who can actually do that are somewhat rare.

I have a spreadsheet that does it by you just pasting in your stats. And then it gives it pretty colours, and allows you to sort, gives you extra stats, and allows you to compare one set of stats against another (so you can track your performance over time) ... also gives you a couple of charts...

But I keep having to update it with new mech releases and that's pissed me off so much that I quit using it. And every time I tell myself, "I'm going to set this up so that it automatically updates", I then think "but by the time I'm finish it, the game will be dead. And it takes several months for people to start tracking their stats over time, and we just had a big balance change, so I should have done it months ago, but I didn't... "

... and yeah. That's been going on for the past couple years and I haven't made any headway because lazy. =3

I do like to at least do my mechs armor in damage. That's always been my goal. Anything after is just icing on the cake,

Let's not forget that the average MWO player has, if memory serves, a surprisingly high ~0.8 WLR.

It's actually kinda interesting how actual average performance compares vs our perceived performance based on a few outlier cases.

Just for fun I checked my main LRM boat's average damage per game.
247,522 damage divided by 325 games equals 761.6 damage per game.

By comparison my favorite laser vomit mech is doing 645.7 damage a game.

There is also this hype about what average damage is or should be, when in reality the average damage in a match can't be more than the average damage it took to do the kills in that match. That's going to be between 2-400 depending on how much spreading there was.

No matter how good the players in a match is, they can't do more damage than it takes to kill the enemy.

I've seen people on the forums say things along the line that everything below 400 damage is bad etc, but the truth is that even damage spread across the team along with winning is the best sign of good teamwork, and in that case no one will have above 400 damage even though they played at their absolute peak, since everyone else also did and there is only so much damage the team can do.

If someone scored super high damage, someone else had little choice but to deal very little. Even under the best of circumstances. As you say, there's only so much damage needed to kill the enemy. Or as I say, "you can only beat so much candy out of a pinata."

...

Wait, when did I ever say that...?
