Haven't played since... whenever the heck the Rifleman dropped, but I'm thinking of reinstalling and dropping a few times a day.

Anything I need to know? Meta builds to play/avoid? Are ya'll in another lurmocalypse?

If I remember correctly I was working on xping my Riflemans, suck sandwitch or OK?

Dropping solo, PUG, stilla suicidal lesson in frustration?

Etc etc

Thanks all!

EDIT: apparently it is necessary to stipluate that I went on hiatus due to moving across the country, shaky internet and fatherhood. Not gameplay. Gameplay comments are meant in jest.

Balance is better than before, but still leaves a lot to be desired. From the tone of your post, I think you will not be sticking around for long this time as well.

Well, I played from closed beta to that point, some fun and dark times alternatively. Life and internet were the primary reasons for stopping.

My internet is still shaky, so that may cut me off if I have terrible latency.

Been doing a bunch of reading with new tech and skills, sounds neat!

Glad to hear balance is at least decent, seems with the new skill trees you can personalize your mechs better, which seems pretty cool. Looking through the mech forum it seems my beloved rifleman will be a challenge, but I lile challenges and tinkering.

Lools like the RAC is implemented? That makes me happy, always loved me dakka.

your Suicidal frustrations seems to come from a lack of understand in how single respawn games work but i may be wrong with that...

i imagine you wont stay long this time either because this wont change and it has nothing to do with mechs, balance, etc. The game is decent but i dont think its what you are looking for if you didnt like it before your wont like it now.

I too just recently came back from a long hiatus. The game is different and yet it's still the same, if that makes sense. Some cool new tech, but the same old BS as before. You early love the game enough to deal with it, or you get frustrated, complain, and quit again.

As far are current trends? A lot of lights boating MGs now to tear you to shreds after about halfway through the match. Might want to run a streak boat to start out. Feed on those f'ing little SOB vultures.

I see the boards aren't any friendlier than years back.

I only started this game in closed beta, so I've played a game or two, and I noted above my hiatus was life and internet related, not gameplay.

The suicidal frustration comment was tounge in cheek and mostly referencing the issues thr game used to have wherein solo puggers ran against 12 (or 8 moons ago) premades and stood no chance, similar to lurmocaplyse references (cause those were real, briefly).

I can already see the community seems to have taken a step down, pity that.

The biggest changes are the skill tree and new tech. You don't need 3 variants to get master anymore. most new tech is mediocre outside of some niche builds. The LFE engines are great and will be your new best friend if you play IS.

machine guns are now very good, particularly on lights.

your rifleman is still decent, not top teir but plenty good for quick play. weapon balance is better than it ever has been before but still not perfect.

no lurmpocalypse right now. they are pretty terrible at the moment.

And solo Pugs gonna Pug. no change there.

More detailed info can be found if search around the forums for something specific. Welcome back and good luck.

Faction warfare as you knew it is gone, you'll have to spend a lot of time learning and setting up the skill tree for each mech (modules are gone). The population is a lot lower now. The weapons are completely different, and so are the quirks from when you stopped.

You'll have a lot of new mechs to go through, the Bushwackers are good.

Mercstar is half the size it was. The maps are bigger and have changed. Terra Therma is better, Frozen City is worse.

The game engine is very slow, you'll need a new PC to get any normal frame rates. Don't expect to get the same FPS you use to.

I've solo pugged up from tier 5, I enjoy it immensely to be honest. I try to keep the mindset of learning from every loss and not shying away from challenging/observing better players than myself. Keeping that attitude has allowed me to grow into a fairly competent solo player today and I can now refer to many of my past "betters" as my current peers, which is cool.

About the only thing that keeps this game fresh is NOT playing it for an extended period like you have done. Therefore you might get some enjoyment out of it.

There are couple of new maps, but not nearly what you were told to expect. Remember Russ Bullocks "A new map every 2 months" statement? Well that hasn't happened but the apologists for PGIs constant verbal production skills will find a way to defend anything.

The biggest change is that they removed the 3 mech mastery "pillar". Now you only have to master one mech through a relatively convoluted, 91 point skill "web". Can't call it a tree....well maybe a skill bush or skill shubbery would be a better description.

They will have refunded a bunch of HSP (historical skill points) which you can use to skill up your mechs along with GXP and SP and maybe DDT, ADD and OCD. God help me I can't recall it all. If you are patient enough to slog through that and re-skill a few mechs, then the game hasn't changed much at all.

Oh, except that there are several new game modes, which when distilled to their essence, are still "deathball up and kill the other team". The sole standout mode being ESCORT mode, which most people despise, a few masochists excepted. In this mode your team either attacks or defends a braindead AI intelligence VIP Atlas as it wanders the map looking for a place to die.

Hopefully they have improved the AI for the new Mechwarrior stand alone game that they have announced, which if you are experienced in dealing with PGI you will not believe word one of their promises and not drop a dime on UNTIL it's released.

Therein lies our sole salvation; that somehow PGI actually makes a good stand alone game, that they deliver on everything they promise, and that it's better than anything they've done in the past.

Should be easy, right?

Thanks folks, that was a good overview. Pretty much what I expected.

plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose, neh?

The 3060ish tech kinda excites me as I was always a Snubbie PPC fan. I am concerned with the FPS comments thougj, my rig ain't exactly a potatoe but it ain't new. Guess I'll jist have to see if it runs well enough to play or this thread is moot.

Bushwacker also makes me happy, suggestions on variant?

I was also unaware of the standalone, been getting my mechwarrior fix from the Battletech turn based, I'll have to check out MW... 5? Won't hold my breath (and will hold my cash) for a while though.

Again, thanks all!

First thing - welcome back!

Second thing - SELL NOTHING!

The new skill tree changed how XP works, so if you sell a 'mech with unspent XP or spent SP (the new currency), you also lose them, as they are now tied to that specific 'mech, not just the variant.

Here is a good resource for Skill Tree info.

Rifleman is still a solid chassis, with the RFL-3N being my favourite.

If you want a Bushwacker, I have to recommend the BSW-P1 for the 6M potential it brings.

[Edit]
Someone in another thread reminded me!

One more point ... play on December 27th ... only one match required ... and you will earn some serious rewards including two free hero mechs when they are released in the spring. So if you are considering starting or restarting ... then playing a match on the 27th would be well worth your time.

There are also a number of other holiday events going on at the moment including stocking stuffers and such ... which can reward free MC/cbills/xp and other items.

I find myself also in this boat. An old noob having played almost 6 k hours in the first few years or so. I jumped right in and tried to just fiddle thru it, but I find I need to do a lot of work just to get up to noob status. Even tho I am a Legendary Founder and was part of the top secret squirrel closed beta team with the silly gold cockpit squirrel statue to prove it.

I just want to be upto speed for MW5. I have no interest in Solaris and the combat sim of MWO just never got to where I was hoping it was going. I watched the mech con team championship 8 v 8 and it still looks exactly the same. Alpha strike spam, arty strike spam and aero strike spam. He who spams the most wins. Only in a few of the matches did I see actual strategy overcome alpha spam and aero/arty spam.

I am happy to see mg's are better as I played lots and lots of light mechs and probably have more hours in lights than any other mech. I especially enjoyed seeing commandos played well. I am also mostly an IS pilot but have most of the clan mechs up until I stopped playing. As I stopped for personal reasons that were not at all game related, merely related to a specific person.

I watched all of the mech con live stream just to see what I am missing as I still have friends playing MWO. All of them I talked into the game or bought the game for :)

So it looks like I have to bite the bullet and just retrain all my muscle memory and relearn the mech lab. Sounds like fun. Plus I need some stompy robot porn goodness in my life.

So you like Bushwackers and Snubs... CT Snub, ST AC20, preferably on the X1 for quirks, but others will do just fine. The one to get is the P1, for all the missiles. SRM-bombing Wackers are a terror in scout mode. You should study up on weapon synergies. With the new tech and different cooldowns on lasers... Well, if you haven't seen those yet, hold your jaw. It might drop.

Yeah, seems there will be a learning curve. But thats fun as its almost (almost) lile a new games, different maps, new skills, different tech, possibly new mechs (seems the bushwacker is the only new chassis that really interests me since I left).

New tech might make me take an old custom TT Zeus I ran in the civil war/jihad. LFE, UAC/10, can't recall the laser/missle loadout but I seem to recall MRM were involved.

Wonder if I have that build laying around somewhere
