Strictly speaking, its entirely possible to 'direct' lightning/electrical discharges. It's just grossly impractical - The 'guiding' arrays that would create a path for the lightning would expend equal or greater stresses on the target as the PPC. But it is possible.
What isn't possible is a 'ball' of lightning that kind of just mozzies around the battlefield, taking its sweet *** time getting anywhere.
Of course, realism has its limits, and I'm not going to complain about old PPCs. But holding one up as realistic while the other stupid is not a valid criticism.
