FAFNIR! You all have been waiting for this 100t gaint death machine, the GOD and birthright of the heavy gauss rifle.

But whats your first impression? Is it worth the pre-order? will it again be a gaint fiasco like the nightstar? (and every IS mech release since the past months, ofcourse clans have no issue here)

The good = It has high mounted slots
The bad= is that it feels starved in Energy slots. The maximum you can get, is 2 ballistics with 5E. Thats little....Very little. A kingcrab can do it with 2 + 4 E +4 M. Yet then again, its ballistics are rather low mounted.
Perhaps to not make the Annihalator obsolete? I can understand that.
Another dissapointment is, that no variant has 4 ballistics spread out over 4 sections. This means no Triple UAC10. Quad LB10's. Triple Rac5.. most likely, to safe the annihalator
My fear is, that PGI still thinks an ECM variant is to powerfull for quirks
Lets see=

FNR-5. 3 Energy, 4 Ballistic, 1 AMS, 1 ECM
H= 1 E
LA= 1 E
LT= 2 B 1 AMS
CT= 1 ECM
RT= 2 B
RA= 1 E
The standard HGR variant. Ofcourse this has to be your primary choise of HGR epicness. However...I was planning to go 5 ER ML's with my 5 model. On the otherhand, i learned that HGR's are just as dangerous at 320 m then at 180 M. So perhaps this variant recieves Ballistic range and cooldown slots. Especially for the HGR. They have to! This baby gotta shine!
Most likely gonna go 3 ER ML, with 2 HGR's and ECM. Priority will be 8ton of ammo.

FNR-5E 5 Energy, 2 ballistic, 1 AMS 1 ECM
H= 1E
LA= 2E
LT= 1 B 1 AMS
CT=1 ECM
RT= 1 B
RA= 2 E
When you dont have enough HGR, you go regular gauss. 2 B + 5 E is not enough for a proper ER med/gauss build. And most likely this variant will get the least quirks. I would love to go 2 HGR + 5 ER ML's, as this works well with my other HGR builds. Less endurance, more firepower.Or 2 Gauss + 2 LPL/PPC's and 2 ML with a LFE

FNR-6U 4 energy 4 Ballistic 1 AMS
H= 1 AMS
LA= 2 B
LT= 2 E
CT=
RT 2 E
RA 2 B

The UAC 20 variant. Sounds alot of fun. Do like the sound of making a LFE 325, 2 UAC 20(6 Ton ammo), 1 LL and 2 ML. Cooled by 16 DHS. This one can be build with KGC-0000 template
KGC-0000

FNR-5E 4 Ballistic 4 Missile 1 AMS
H= 1AMS
LA= 2 M
LT= 2 B
CT=
RT= 2 B
LA= 2M

I know...i know people dont think LB20's for IS are viable... But i wanna give it a go. Dual LB20's and 4 SRM4's. Otherwise i dont know what to do, TBH, This variant has left me without inspiration

FNR-6R 4 Energy, 2 Ballistic 2 Missile 1 AMS
H= 1 AMS
LA= 1 E 1 M
LT= 1 B 1 E
CT=
RT= 1B 1 E
RA= 1E 1 M

Here things get a bit speedier. I loved my Mauler ML90 brawler with STD 300, 2 ML, 2 AC 20 and 2 SRM 4's. Mighty copy that with the 6R and an STD 325. Or an Dual UAC-10, 4 ER ML, 2 SRM6 midrange brawler. This one is gonna be fun

FNR-WR 5 Energy, 1 ballistic 4 Missile 1 ECM
H= 1E
LA= 1 E 1M
LT= 2 E 2m
CT= 1 ECM
RT= 1 B
RA= 1 E 1 M

Hm.. This one is intresting. But a bit uneven. But i do like the sound of 2 LL, 3 ERML, 1 HGR and perhaps aided by an MRM launcher.
KAIJU Something like this, Exept it will be kinda hot.

I love it. The only thing I would alter, is the engine cap to 360, to match the Atlas & Kind Crab. Both of those go from 300 stock to 360 max, whereas the Fafnir goes from 300 stock to 325 max. It can't be the ECM, because not all Fafnirs have ECM and the Atlas AS7-D-DC with ECM has the same 360 cap.

Now, my opinion may change as more details are released around countdown week, but I will remain hopeful.

Yes, that is foolish, but oh well.

Hardpoint inflation, massive side torsos prone to being crit out easily, barely faster than current 100 tonners.

This is going to need even more love than the Atlas just to be viable.

Barely faster than current 100 tonners? You mean...not at all faster than most current 100 tonners? Only the DWF and ANH are hard-locked at slower speeds.

Yup....

Still I hope that everyone that wanted one, finds that it lives up to their expectations.... me, I'm going to love dismembering them.

Doesn't really matter, it's only going what? 52kph? Even the Cyclops will eat the Fafnir alive in a head to head fight.

Probably a misguided attempt to 'save' the Atlas, since dual big ballistics are generally preferable to the Atlas's ballistic/missile halfies approach.

As for the Fafnir, it will be fine. It'll be a heavier, slower Sleipnir. It's not going to displace anything, though it may push the Atlas into an even tighter, more useless corner. Not really a big accomplishment, that.

Unless they nerf the Cyclops. You know, for balance...

Somebody docked an orbital tug on top of some Thanatos legs. It has great hard points, sure, but no ascetics.

Thanatos, Hellspawn, Fafnir... I guess we’re going for the inner sphere ugly duckling collection. The Yeoman can’t be too far behind...

They are cockpit level.

The spread is pretty much akin to the Mad Cat Mk II.

It's bigger than the Mk II, slower than the Mk II, probably clumsier than the Mk II, the lasers are well below the cockpit, and HGauss have an optimum range of 180 meters to the lower bound of 400 on the Mk II's ERML.

Not comparable.

I'm not excited with it, mostly because of tech imbalance

Some variants have ECM so I have very low expectations for quirks/agility

Dakka will be better on annihilator simply due to hardpoint count and armor, selepnir has better geometry for the 4 UAC5s build (which is outclassed by the Mad Cat MKII B and KDK-3's 2xUAC10+2xUAC5 most of the time anyway)

IS gauss vomit in torsos is lol compared to arm gauss vomit clan mechs

It was about the placement of the hardpoints.

If the FNR-5 came with a nice general UAC jam quirk it might do the 2xuac5-2xuac10 thing effectively given the torso mounts locations. But armor might be a problem.

Placement is only important inasmuch as it lets you shoot with less of yourself exposed. Same relative placement + bigger, slower, less powerful alpha makes it not comparable.

I seem to lose my Gauss more when it's in the arm than when it's in the torso in my Nightstar 9FC. I much prefer the Mauler 2P.

I know nothing about the Fafnir so have no expectations, but it looks very cool to me, and I didn't want to shell out real money for the Sleipnir, so I'm looking forward to trying out a Heavy Gauss platform finally. And I'm a big fan of ECM, so that's great.

Ya, those side torso's are huge targets, but PGI will totally quirk them just like they did on the Thanatos. ;)

He wasnt saying it was as good as a MKII, he was saying that the weapon mounts are generally situated the same as a MKII.

Another slow 100 ton mech.
Hmm.
I get that this game is driven by nostalgia, but its mechanics are not going to be kind to this particular example of nostalgia bait.
Its the Thanatos squared.

Slow as hell with giant STs but will have no appreciable quirks given its hard point heights and number as well as the presence of ECM. Plus, for me personally: I play group queue with a consistently high number of people. That mode makes playing a 100 ton mech fairly impracticable. For that reason alone this is another skip.
