Yes top units certainly train, just not always in or for FW. I can tell you from the units I was in, training is serious business. Will this training carryover and help with FW, most certainly.
Now for FW dedicated units, while I am not sure if they train per se, they for certain organize like they were performing competitive drops. This includes known strats, prepared builds, complimentary drop decks. I can say for certain though prep work does play a role in some FW dedicated units success.
I can say as a member of BCMC that we have info on builds and some basic guidelines in our TS channel on Comstar.
We don't actually practice. Like at all. We just group up and drop.
Saying this though, most of us have been playing with each other as a unit for years now. So while not practiced or in any way comp, we tend to know each other pretty well and playing off of each other is like second nature.
Also some other units with very similar playstyles, habits, and CW experience are very easy to play with as you can expect the same. EVIL for instance can mix in with our guys or ours with theirs, and as a player the experience is pretty much the same. Ash and the guys from 54MR as well.
Our players do spend time prepping so to speak. When you said this about prep it got me thinking about it. Comp guys have their deck and a specialty. This is of course at a much different level than those of us who are CW guys but drop decks being ready and prepared as well as generally being complementary is a big deal.
In that prep you'd also see stuff regular or less invested players may not actually be doing. For instance most of our guys could all field three waves of Hellbringer's or Whammy's. Three 6R's for instance (I own four 6R's on my main account and two on my top f2p IS account). Unless you are a die hard such as myself, you'd likely not have so many duplicate chassis with identical builds or slight variances for different maps or situations. If your focus is on being effective in CW the idea of have three 6R's with dual gauss/ four ermeds makes perfect sense. I generally see players that will have a ballistics deck with a bunch of different mechs in it. I also don't know anybody outside of my little CW circle that has multiple hero mechs like the Slepnir or Black Widow. Even the naming and colouring of my mechs is organised and prepped in a manner that lets me swap ready mechs in and out of my deck when needed. I could picture a lot of guys taking a look around my mech bay and drop decks and thinking it was a very boring and unimaginative place.
