You know.. we used to have random maps...

I don't believe we ever had random map selections. I'm pretty sure I once read that the matchmaker's job was to have you drop on all maps an even number of times. It seemed to pan out at the time. All my drops on all maps were close to even. Maps that had two versions were treated as one. Map stats were skewed once voting started.

Change voting to banning and you'll see more map diversity.

Well, that is what unweighted random distribution of Maps will result in - you play all Maps an even amount if you play enough games to recieve the full random range of Maps.

On 1 day though it can be 8 times Colony, 2 times Bog and 5 times HPG.

Don't you like playing the voting meta game;P Were you vote for maps that you know will most likely lose vs one that will most likely win to build your multiplier.
