Generally when you see the map has managed to be on Terra Therma, Caustic Valley, Bog, or some other god forsaken map you can tell that there's at least someone there who is a little off. If you also get it paired up with Escort then don't trust anyone, not even yourself.

Test firing assault hitting the leg of my light mech when I am like 200 meters in front of him.

1: A disco (usually the fault of MWO/ISP/modem gremlins rather than the player though).

2: "Hold locks plz".

Players holding right at the edge of their maximum range (ie "your weapon is doing 1 damage") kinda-sorta is one, but doesn't tend to be noticed until it's too late. Remember: optimum range is the range that matters! (Most of the time)

1. One of 'those' map/modes pop up. Grim Domination, Alpine Skirmish... automatically you know there's a bunch of lame people by how they're voting. Or...

2. More reliably, just look at the minimap. You can usually tell in the first 30-45 seconds if your team is going to go ultra-potato by looking at which direction they're going. People charging down the middle of Oasis, Assaults trying to go through the tunnel on Mining Collective, heavies posting at the first building they find on Frozen City/Incursion. You know right there you're about to have a bad time.

When someone on comms asks you to step over the threshold.

When you say hello at the start of the match and you're greeted with silence.
That's when you realize you're going to lose and people are going to start raging at each other on voice comms proving they DID have a mic and voice comms activated after all.

Lame map and modes that normally people hate is a good sign.

A team full of junk mechs can be bad, but not always since you can also have a team full of meta-chassis played by people who don't know how to use them.

The team scattering immediately in random directions is almost a sure sign of a loss.

Also, mechs simply parking in dopey locations and doing nothing is another "you lose" indicator. We all know the type - scrapping enemies at max range for piddly damage with lasers, the all LRM assault parked 800 meters from the edge of combat, firing random missiles at things, and so on.

You glance at your assault lance and count a concerning number of missile tubes.

1. Map and game mode: if hpg comes up guess what map you fight on next.
2. Which side you spawn on? The map and modes favor one team horribly esp dom and grim or crim and dom.
3. The types of mechs on your team on load screen. Snvs? How much you want to bet its a lrm boat snv?
4. When you ask if any one has atm/lrms since you have nac/tag and you get the silent treatment only to find the team did have a lrm-er but a very shity one who doesn't know how to lrm properly spectating it spam lrms at any thing it can while most of the team is dead.

I have observed that the side with the most people saying hello* and chatting in the pre-game lobby screen is the side that usually loses.

My theory is that noobs are generally friendlier/chattier, Vets less so. The side with the most noobs generally loses.

#GGMatchmakerClose.

* Exempt from the above rule are those players saying hello to specific other players they already know.
