What is the distribution of the various tiers? Does in follow a bell curve, or is it flat? Anyone got a feel/idea?

Quite a curve. Only lose with less than 200 (not for sure) Matchscore will let your tier fall.

A bell curve would be nice, but it is really just a progression bar, and any player will eventually make it to Tier 1 if they play long enough.

There isn't a distribution at all. Just an XP bar and with enough time everyone in the game will be in Teir 1.

Except players that can not keep a positive winning percentage when they move up in tier.

It is impossible to move down on a win, but it IS possible to move up, or stay the same on a loss.

Unless a player does VERY poorly, very consistently, they will still eventually move up. The MM tries to make matches even, so it really is just a matter of time, mathematically.

If a player is loosing 75% of the time and not doing much damage they will go down. Shoot even in wins they are probably not doing much damage and not going up much. And there are player like that who hit a ceiling when they hit tier 3 or something. Probably a lot more than people would think.

Tier system is nothing more than a distraction from the fact that MWO has absolutely no match making in place at all, its currently a f*cking joke.
There is no skill separation at all, low skill players are mixed with high skill players dis-proportionally, evident from the fact that i regularly have nights where getting a win is not even possible.
Having consistent teams made up of players who game after game can't scrape more than 50-60 damage, i'm outscoring them easily in deliberate crap mechs with crap loadouts.

I'll be bluntly honest here, noobs ruin this game for me, i don't want them in my games.

True, but the matchmaker is designed to keep W/L ratios as close to 50% as it can. Although it does not really work in the group queue, in the solo queue the average pilot will win enough matches, and do well enough in enough losses to eventually get to Tier 1. Really bad players who never improve are probably a lot fewer than you believe. It is just simple math.

You do not need to have a positive winning percentage to go up.

Watch enough player streams and you will quickly find out that players who deserved to have their PSR score go down, actually have it go up.
And this is exactly why more than 50% of the top 2 tiers actually belong in tier 5, this doesn't create or encourage a genuine competitive environment, it actually kills it stone dead.

While technically true, moving up with a W\L ratio below 1 is highly improbable.

Despite how easy it is to move up in tiers, there are still folks around here that can't and are stuck at t5 and t4. I'm glad they are.

I would like however a way to for players to move down in tier even on a win.

It is a lot easier then you would think. Win 35% of your games. Do enough damage in 50% of your loses not to drop and you will be tier 1 eventually. Having a higher W/L just get you there faster but it just is a matter of time.

This apparently assumes you are doing enough to move up in the wins and not just hanging on by your teeth.

You don't have to do much at all in wins to move up. I have had nights that I went under 50% on wins but I have never had a night where I did not go up in the tier. Made me stop playing in a bid to ration my time because I really have no desire to be a tier 1 pug.

You don't need to be good to be in Tier 1.

Seems to me that if you are doing so well in losses that it makes up for the fact that you lost more than you won that night, you probably don't belong in the tier you are in.

I have a pretty negative w/l that sometimes makes me feel I am the epitome of failure. Yet somehow I am in tier 2 lol.

But then, I'm rarely on the bottom half of causing damage and have more = signs than I think is statistically possible.
