The Ready Button Prior to a Match launching is a lie... Posted Image

(Also, old river city nostalgia)

I never understood the ready button, the countdown automatically goes to 10 seconds when everyone is connected. Doesn't matter how many ready up or not. For the most part i just ignore it.

Throwback to the days before the timer clicked to 10s when everyone connected. Used to have to wait for everyone to press ready instead.

It's rare for a game feature to make you feel jet black hate towards teammates before a match has even started :)

I don't understand? So how does it work currently? It's irrelevant to press it, or not? Most people seem to press it anyway so I wonder how could anyone think most people would know it has no effect.

Pretty much irrelevant. You can have every single person but one person who hasn't connected yet (zero ping) "ready up" and it'll still go down from that long timer. If that person connects and it hasn't gotten to 10 seconds left then it'll automatically go down from where ever it's at to 10 despite that one person not pressing it.

Honestly, it's hard to tell whether you need a certain number of the 24 to press it when everyone is connected because people like pressing buttons. Only an official response or 12v12 private match testing can really answer it and we're 100% not getting an answer from PGI staff.

The ready button is totally meaningless however it does provide a good glimpse on how the match will turn out.

I find the more people on your team that press ready = the worse that team is. Anecdotal evidence for sure but that has been my experience.

Pressing ready does not speed up the battle countdown, the battle countdown is dependant on everyone being loaded into the game. Even if 99% of the players are "ready", if one person is still connecting then you still have to wait.

Once everyone has connected and is loaded up, the battle countdown shoots down to I think 10 seconds. Irrespective of if people have pressed ready or not - thus the ready button is meaningless.

Once EVERYONE readies it will prematurely end the 10 sec timer we get once everyone is connected and launch the match. I've only seen it a couple times since closed beta.

Yep, it's pointless now. I quit pressing it a few years ago after they added the automatic 10 second counter (once everyone is actually connected).

They really should just take the ready button back out. But, PGI being PGI. When they first implemented the "Ready" button, you could not start the match until everyone clicked "ready" (think it would default time out after 90 seconds?). For those zombies that started a match, and then sat and picked lint out of their belly button hairs for 10 minutes, it fueled fellow team mates into rage induced TK's, in game chat flame wars, dumpster fires on the forums, and various negative consequences. Because time is money when you're a mechwarrior, and nobody has time for that shizzle (I guess).

So PGI finally changed it to basically meaninglessness by having the game auto start as soon as each player successfully joined the match server. But PGI, never one to admit defeat, or "wrongness", steadfastly refuses to just eliminate the "Ready" button.

My old unit at least had fun with it, turning it into a mini-game. If we got a ghost drop match in FW, the last unit mate on our team to "ready up" got TK'd by the rest of us before we went on to "auto-win" the ghost drop.

Conversely, I've found that the more people don't hit it the higher the probability that you have one or more AFKs at the start of the match.

If everyone hits the ready button it skips the 10 second countdown, not really a lie...

Haha good point, hence why my point was anecdotal and pretty much meaningless then really.

I do. Thought it would be some forum material to discuss considering how long this mechanic has been in the game.

Honestly, I've seen people with such widely different experiences in this game that it makes me wonder if people even are playing the same game.

By the time that everyone had a chance to hit it, the counter has already dropped to 10 seconds automatically ... and since some have said that it was different in earlier days: when was that exactly? Because I joined when the game entered open beta and I simply can't remember the button every behaving other than now.

Well, what can you have it do? Launch the match before people can connect? Just think of it as the elevator close button, it often does nothing than make you feel better.
