This is extremely frustrating. I'm trying to get that warhorn and now being able to play means I probably won't be able to get it.
This really kind of sucks.

They removed penalties for breaking contracts in the last patch, so you could go IS for the event if you have the mechs and want to.

There is a lootbag event going on atm. That forces you to play in defined scenarios or not at all.
So at the moment you have to be either Freelancer, Merc, Davion or Steiner Loyalist.
The problem is that when you now break loyality to paricipate in the event you will be put on probation when you rejoin your faction beeing unable to gain Faction points during that period.
You even can loose RepPoints if you fight for an enemy faction or even worse against your old faction.
But since you did not even finish your 25 trial missions that shouldn't be a problem for you.
(shouldn't even think about FP at all, lootbag event or not)

Going by how new you are... I'd advise against trying to farm the FP event. Running a trial mech in FP is a sure way to getting rolled over and over again.

Personally, I feel it develops better habits to start with some idea of how teams play.

... as per the patch notes, penalties for breaking loyalty were removed. I told you this already.

There are no Desertion phases after breaking Contracts or Loyalty. However, the Loyalist Probationary period starting from the initial pledge remains in place.
The probationary period is still in place. That is a penalty for breaking loyalty. Also... as I said, it would require me to leave my unit (because my unit has no desire to break loyalty) in order to compete in Faction Play.
For mercs and freelancers this is great, but it still penalizes loyalists. And then to add insult to injury, they make it so people can't complete a faction play event unless their entire unit breaks loyalty which means that they are denying people the opportunity to complete a Faction Play event that started as open to everyone, now it's not.
Now maybe you're one of those people who jump from unit to unit on a daily basis or have your own one man unit so you can do what you want. But not everyone is a solo mechwarrior like you. Some people do play as teams and some units don't break loyalty. The fact that PGI is trying to force this on people is a shame.
PGI should have planned this better and did the loyalty event AFTER the Lucky Charms event so that people wouldn't be denied getting a warhorn just because they didn't want to leave a unit and that unit didn't want to break loyalty.
If nothing else, this who situation makes me hope PGI removes Faction Play completely from the game. You can get the same experience with less limitations from Quick Play at this point and your matches mean as much there as in Faction Play.

As I recall, scouting matches count for the 10-match requirement - making it stupidly easy to get past the probation in a single evening - and event rewards are unaffected by the probation in the first place (only faction loyalty points and contract payout are).

Still, it is a disadvantage – and one only the loyalists (new players are treated as EVERY new player since implementation of the probation period) suffer now. No, it is not the end of the world and i surely don't want so start shouting at PGI ...
But i still think beeing a loyalist should count or at least not penalized by the system. I am ok with not participating in the special Stein/Davion Event. Thats a path i choose with beeing a loyalist. It is just the lootbag event i want to complete.

People tend to react to this matter, because the loyalists seem to become a problem for FW/PGI, because the population in FW does not support it. So they do not encourage it anymore and with events like this, even give it slight disatvanteges.
The proper way would be to communicate the problem, the intentions and approaches to fixing it and, if they have to kill of the loyalist system, to replace it by sth similar fpr immersion/rpg purposes or at least compensate in some other way. But plz not change it small steps at a time to wean us from beeing loyalists.
But all this said – there is still no official reaction and PGI did react to criticism in the past, so i am not that worried. Only problem i see is communication. Cuz i like to know and things/intentions/fixes i understand, i can accept much easier.

Those two faction vs faction events should have happened AFTER the loot bag event, not during it. Either that, or, PGI should completely do away with Loyalists completely and just make all Units Mercenary Units or just get rid of Faction Play completely and remake it into whatever it is they're trying to make of it.

Now, I have my own one man Unit, and I don't have to worry about it any more. And since the in-game Unit system ends up costing players more than they'll ever benefit from it anyway, it's a win-win. I can still play with my old Unit mates if I want as well, since the in-game Unit system doesn't restrict you from joining players in Teamspeak, and playing in their groups.
