Yeah I don't get it either. The entire game is based on a TURN BASED table top game played with miniatures similar to Warhammer 40k. What this new version of the game represents is a return to that legacy, basically classic battletech translated from the table top to the computer screen.

We're already at 2018. Implementing a turn-based board game into an RTS computer game is nowhere close to being rocket science. But whether or not a developer chooses to do so is on them.

My only disappointment is that they stopped at lance based combat. I was really hoping the game would scale to maybe battalion sized elements. Yeah that would be one long game but anyone who has actually played a real war game even on the computer knows that you could be playing a single battle for days and days moving around entire corps and divisions of troops one regiment at a time. That is the scale I want to see come out of the new Battletech game eventually.

I can imagine controlling and watching 100+ units in a turn-based game getting extremely tedious real quickly. Having it as an RTS becomes more manageable with judicious use of "pause", among other things.

But I'm not sure why they SHOULD adapt it to an RTS. Turn-based has a charm of its own, and if anything X-COM's demonstrated that there's a large market for it.

I'm not sure this game would scale too well for a company-scale game anyway, I guess there'd be a lot of balancing and game design issues if both forces were up to a company in size. And it'd just be really slow to play.

Seems like they've gone for pretty much the scale used in against-the-bot MegaMek -- you have about a company-sized unit, but only a lance in the field at any time + maybe a handful of allied combined-arms assets. I think it's good.

OK, i changed my mind and tried it out. First 2 missions.

TL;DR: Technically unfinished, Tutorial fails to explain most of the GUI, developers could not decide between making a computer game or writing a novel, i'm pretty dissapointed. Could have been developed by PGI, everything is so familiar...

But that's just me, as usual i'm a potato bag full of criticism.
If you want to know anything specific, just ask - i'll be on for at least another hour.

EDIT
No questions so i'm off. Happy hunting!

I have more than enough stuff to play atm so I'm holding off, but bud of mine got this game. Says story is great but game runs like 3 legged dog and have other technical issues, but he says gameplay is pretty good and story is amazing. Hopefull they'll patch it soon.
Buying games on day one... hell, in 3 months or so is pretty risky, will have tons of crap to deal with before (if) devs fix it.

its worth buying, just not for $40

id wait till it goes on sale

I only paid $20 for it from the kickstarter, and I feel good about it at that price

To each their own, but for me it was worth what I spent to kickstart it... though my Spider tends to kill any pilot I put in it....

I think the only turn based online game I've played is VGA planets, a play by email game. Not really fan of turn based things unless it fits the game well. I hope MW5 is successful enough when and if it comes out.

I've never understood any of peoples complaints that revolve around using SJW things. What difference it is to anyone if your character can be "they", not that I don't even understand what it would refer to.

As long as they're not shoving PC down my throat throughout the campaign, I'm fine with having "they" as a pronoun.

However, I wouldn't know since I can't even get the game to run. It constantly crashes on startup. Trying to re-install now. Posted Image

By the same token. I find it silly that people care so much about the inclusion of 'they'.

If you lived in a country where incorrectly addressing someone by their wanted pronoun can land you a fine or worse, it would bother you. The sad fact is, it also becomes their word against yours, just like what's happening in the UK right now where hundreds of people have been prosecuted for 'being offensive' on social media.

It's not that I mind people want to be addressed in a certain way, or that they have a different choice of life...it's that identity politics are cancerous to society.

I've seen lots of people on Steam complaining about crashes and a myriad of other issues. I got mine on GoG and have yet to have a single crash or anything of the sort. Not sure if it has anything to do with it , but if you do have it on Steam and can still refund it..do so.

You and me both.

As for the pronoun in question, "they" is used as an identifying pronoun when someone does not wish to be considered either male or female. A more thorough explanation can be found here: http://www.dictionary.com/browse/they Whether you agree with that or not is your prerogative. Not an issue for me, that's for sure.

As for the game, I'm hoping to get into it soon. RL is holding me back a bit. Because luck likes to laugh in my face, I have a suspicious feeling I'm going to experience more than a few lucky crits on my mechs and pilots....

People shouldn't be fined for unintentionally hurting's someones feelings. That's just so beyond ridiculous.

First, Turn based is not dead, not by a long shot. The success of the XCOM series shows that very clearly. Second, Battletech is a game that should have been converted to the PC a long, long time ago and many of us have been waiting years and years for it. For us fans, this is just what the doctor ordered.

As far as controlling 100+ units getting tedious, yeah I get that but some of us like those very complex scenarios where your in control of the invasion of an entire planet. Its very niche but it is still something fans want. The problem with RTS is all the real time micro management you have to deal with. The AI just isn't good enough to make its own decisions on the spot. You can't just tell the AI to take its company over to objective A and defend it in a strategic manner and expect it to make its own decision as to how to go about doing that or when to cut and run before you take too many loses or hell even lure the enemy into an ambush. Turn based allows you to do all those things. RTS can be fun sure, but I find it to feel much less realistic.

To be honest, what I would ideally like to see is for HBS to make the base game extremely mod-able including allowing for the player base to expand the game to epic proportions, add maps, edit and modify campaigns, add mechs, add custom rules, etc. If they were to do that, the player base would take care of the rest and I have no doubt that the vast majority of us could find the game we really want to play.

I was into turn based mech action ever since Front Mission, in SNES. Thus BT scratches that particular itch for me. :)

It does indeed load slow between battles. And it does hang up at times. But the battles run smooth enough, except for when the artillery destroys the buildings, minor slowing. I think with some optimization passes it'll be just fine in both regards, hopefully.

I've had some minor FPS hiccups as well. All fine at 60+fps until certain things happen and it just tanks. Even opening a new part of the map sometimes makes it drop and I'm running it on my SSD.

Overall, it's a great game. Not as complicated as I would have liked but it scratches the itch for now.

Anyone else disappointed in the character creator?
