Well, I get 400+ points every now and then in T3, but I guess I can kiss the MC for 500+ good bye. Even with my mastered Mechs I don't get there right now. I used the current sale to buy an IS Assault and a Clan Light Mech. I can already tell it will be painful to skill them up. ;-) I had an even win/loss ratio before I started playing them. ;-)
I can adapt, role wise.

I just like to feel I participated and did not drag down the average too much.

I tend to assume I did something wrong. ;-) And I probably did. too. ;-)
The little secret I have was about this time last year I was tier 5. Why, computer. It is hard playing sub 10 frames per second, and that is with LRMs forget trying to hit things with AC's. Now when I started to use the new computer, well, well , well. 700, 800, 900 match scores. Then many matches with 1000 - 1600 damage It was interesting, like I should not be there. It just felt dirty until I hit tier 2.
I got good at playing on sub standard machines, but practiced the basics in the training grounds. Then when I got to play on a good computer wow. So I started from the P of pilot in tier 5, playing aggressively I ended up vaulting out of tier 5, blowing through tier 4 and slowing down a bit in tier 3 and landing into tier 2 where the grind began about halfway through. This took me just a few months, but the same amount of time to get through tier 2. I got into tier 1 I think in December or January. So now it has been 13 months from low tier 5 to 3/4 or so into tier 1 and still rising.
I hit a wall and had to stop being so aggressive and made a decision to play a little bit more conservatively. But that was about halfway through tier 2. Now at tier 1 all bets are off and I get my unit members charging behind me or I get to play the spotter or NARCer for LRM runs. (who better to put in a spotting or NARCing roll than the resident LRM boat pilot)
The best thing to say, how do you like to play. Then do it. Will you figure out doing certain things will cause you to die, how some people move on the maps again and again.
There are players that have played this game since 2012 or early 2013 that are still in tier 3 or 4 or 5. they are still having fun or they would have quit by now. Then even at tier 1 you will have some PUG groups that just disperse for no purpose and the assault that runs off on his own gets jumped by 1 to 3 lights and dies while calling for help that never comes. Then complains about it.
Just remember, it's a game to have fun with. OMG did I just say have fun, not go hard core each match with optimized builds!
