I actually found that using the new config save feature was a decent workaround.
1. Save your current config just in case
2. Export your config to get teh code.
3. use strip mech function to remove equip and armor.
4. import config by pasting in the code you just exported.
5. save mech and play normally without issue
worked on three mechs in a row. so yeah IF you need a fix before the hotfix there ya go.

I hope so... There's some UI-related issues in the MechLab...
- The counters over in "WareHouse > Consumables" are not updating immediately when changing around what Consumables are equipped on a Mech. One must change WareHouse tabs in order to get it to display what the current counts are.
- Also, when you come back from a Match and get a New Supply Cache, the "Unopened Supply Caches" counter is failing to immediately update. One must access their Inventory area, or re-login to MWO just to get that to show the right number.
EDIT :: By the way, I get that PGI's Staff is other humans. But, at least one of those two bugs above has been ongoing since before the 'Solaris 7' Update. It's kind of bad that it's been allowed to persist.

We didnt get an expected downtime; Is it supposed to only take a couple of minutes, an Hour, or more?

Looks like they may be back up and running already, and faster than the normal estimate.
On the bright side, at least there's no HotFix Patch to be done... It was all Server-Side.
