Ready?
Manufacturer named components. (IS only)
Opens gates for not just engines (vlar 300 STD grants quirk of +10% dissapation for example)
No quirks for LFE or XL
Opens door for more IS named equipment (asking for named weapons FOREVER!)

FTA..
It seems as if changes which could improve gameplay and the new player experience are inversely opposed to old hardcore demographics who blindly oppose any attempt @ improvement.
PGI can try to improve things which would appeal to new and younger gamers or they can obstinately stick with catering to older stubborn demographics who want hard sanctioned TT rules and don't care if gameplay suffers because of it.
Can't blame PGI for adhering to what those who buy the most in-game content demand.
If @ some point in the future, money becomes a real issue for PGI. Maybe we will see more attempts at innovation and original content from PGI as they attempt to cater to newer and younger gamers. That would probably be the time to bring up these types of topics. Although it can't hurt to hold up a windsock & see which way the wind is blowing?

isxl gets st armor buffs, and agility buffs. st death remains. clan do not get them in favor of no st death.
std gets ct armor and structure buffs, maybe even zombie buffs (like boosting weapon stats when the sts are cleaved off). clan also gets them if they use std, including future mechs like the kingfisher.
lfes remain unchanged as they are already the dominant is engine right now, at least in my inventory.

Hey now, I'm only going off memory

I recall it being that PGI couldn't add another "engine type" which is why the LFE behaves exactly like the Clan XL. I don't think they mentioned other avenues, like increased agility or what-not.

point is if you are competent enough to do ui work you are competent enough to game logic. i know we all like the 'pgi doesnt have any programmers' meme, but they have a script kiddie at least. and thats all you need to do this kind of game logic.

atm, you take them mainly because lb20 and hvy-gauss; in some cases because the mechs just has enough tons to run it. but let's be honest:
on anything without those 2 weapons and lighter than hvy/assault, you WANT that xl/lfe, you don't even think about going std.
so.. something is needed to encourage at least thinking about them. called options, called balance. .. 2 words some guys in canada have problems with

Heavy gauss annies get to the action a bit faster and keep up with the rest of the team a bit better while xl engine mechs get to respond quicker to incoming fire and hide their squishy bits
This would give std engines legitimate value for their weight besides enabling some heavy torso weapon combos.
and it would give xl engines some more survivability by giving those mechs a bigger chance to move into cover
Hmm or maybe give std engines better acceleration and xls high speed becuz an annie with an ever worse acceleration might be too easy too pick apart, i dunno just throwing it out there

I'm not in favour of tying speed into engine type as that's what the ratings for. If anything you should tie torso movement to engine type, give;
IS XL's more torso speed to get their squishies out the way (lighter engine, faster movement)
Std's more Pitch/Yaw to better brawl with (smaller engine more room to move)
Use the LFE/Clan XL as the baseline.
Edit: That doesn't mean XL's get a range penalty or Std's get a speed penalty, these are incentives.

Maybe its written and optimised in 80x86 assembly, FORTRAN or some archaic lang that is not widely supported.

I would rather standard engines to be improved to close the gap between standard and XL.
Not have both be buffed to ensure the gap between them remains the same.
