I heard this phrase often in context with MWO during the last time.
Can anyone explain me what this is/ will be?
Thanks

MWO was recently rebranded to MWO Solaris 7.
Bolt ons are the primary feature of this new rebrand, and are assorted decorative crap that you can slap on to certain chassis which allow you to try and make your mech look as ridiculous as a 1v1 and 2v2 mode with 14 buckets.

They are available as prizes in the goodie boxes with more and better bolt ons being present in the better rewards that one gains as they advance in Solaris. I believe they are also present to a lesser extent in the normal goodie boxes you may gain through regular play but I am not certain as I have not yet opened any of mine.

heres a less salty answer:

Boltons is a new cosmetic option in the same vein as camo and decals. It was added along with Solaris 7 1v1 and 2v2 game mode and that is primarily where you can get them. You gain a Solaris supply cache every time you rank up, with higher ranks giving you better caches. Not every rank will give you a bolt on but most will. You can rank up in each of the 7 divisions separately. Boltons are not unlocks like decals but rather seperate items specific to a mech chassis and bolt on spot on that mech. You can also buy specific boltons with MC if you want specific ones or do not like the random nature of the caches. Boltons include thongs like non-functional melee weapons, wings, horns, metal scrap and even bushes. Many can be painted/coloured. Boltons fall off when they are shot but do not count as part of the mech geometry. You do not lose the Bolton if it is shot. They can be used in any game mode but are primarily intended for Solaris 7.

Bah!
My response was nicely concise and answered the question, with but a tad bit of attempted humor at the expense of the known aspect of the mode that is limiting it and player participation therein.

And now I just feel terrible saying they are to make your mech look ridiculous. ;)

They are useless vanity items - a waste of time and resources.

The one thing I haven't figured out from bolts on is do they fall off instantly from even a simple thing as a team mate raming you at start of match or do they have an hp of sorts to stay on your mech after a few hits? Seems like a waste if it just goes poof brushing up against a team mate.

Ok, those wings are bolt ons, yes?
So nothing of practical use just cosmetical upgrades.
That's ok because I don't care for skins or cosmetics.
Thank you guys.

However,
Something like boltons (custom mech geometry) has always existed and an idea like it--to have custom Atlas heads, for example--was floated a long time ago. Not what we got, but I think that was part of the inspiration. I honestly like the idea of custom mech geometry and wish they did more with it, but with so many mech chassis, it creates more work for the artists and inflates file sizes for textures. We did get modular weaponry pretty much across the board so there's that.

Oh don't get me wrong.
I like the idea of individualising my mech and spend hours in the mechlab and smurfys.
But I concentrate on weapons, armour and battle power and not so much on deacals and cosmetics.
If possible I would give al my skins, warhorns, coulors etc. to the next who asks.
But not allowed.
But ai understand every guy who pimps his mech.
Have fun.

I think it's those Space Marine wings you sometimes see on an Atlas

Just realized, i haven't seen any in game QP or GP yet. Does anyone actually use them or do small laser mechs just pop them off since hitting the tip of them might avoid hitting the Mech but blow off the part?
Would people buy them if they didn't blow off even though it screws with "implied" hit reg due to not being part of the damage geometry?

Most of them are just so small that they go unnoticed at ranges QP is usually played at. Hell, I even forget sometimes that my Griffon is running around with a Laurel on its head.

I don't know if collision damage affects them, but any weapon fire will knock them right off. It doesn't even need to deal damage- you can completely strip the bolt-ons off of a 'Mech by sweeping each item with a TAG.

Late to the party, after spending 2000+ MC to make an Awesome look more like it's name sake I've come to terms that bolt ons are indeed a poor use of REAL money. I didn't know it was as bad as sweeping a TAG laser to strip bolt ons. Oh yeah and the achievement for adding bolt ons to every available slot yields 50-60k in cbills... About as much as you get for losing a match in QP.

Anywho not gonna throw more money at the PGI bolt on vacuum and wait to buy more if and when they become permanent until the torso or arm is destroyed. This a real neat feature that needs some work to increase the value.

Decals don't stay? Any armor damage melts it right off

This has made me want to use Zeus.

Thank you.
I didn't think there were any useful boltons and instead just generic crap.

That's useful enough, as that's a big characteristic of the Zeus's cooling system (even if it has no effect on gameplay).
