Through force of habit, I gg every game, whether or not I personally or others felt it to be so.

The habit follows me through other games, having started when I used to play chess competitively (involved a handshake too).

Are people really offended by a gg at the end of a match, even if it was pretty one-sided? What is the threshold for taking offense? 5-12? 4-12? 3-12?

I don't take any offense either way. But I do not really consider anything short of 8-12 to be a good game.

Meh, I don't think it is worth fretting over.

People are going to get pissy no matter what you do and really if you really mean to simply be polite keep at it. There's always the option in this game to block folks, so people upset by the gg'ing of others need to use that feature if they find it offensive.

Completely honest, despite the fact I play competitive games now (mostly in the past) like WarCraft/StarCraft, where this kind of online etiquette is very common, it always made me cringe hard. I personally hate all these acronyms, always wondered why it became so popular in the first place... You tell it to some rando, you don't even bother write full words, maybe someone has no idea what you're trying to tell when you type something like "ggwpnore" and stuff. Pretty confusing and extremely pointless IMO.

In MWO I've seen new stuff like 07 or <0 for the first time, it feels a bit more creative, but still rubs me the wrong way. When I'm in a mood, I'm more into talking to the team over the VOIP, say hi or something. When I'm typing in chat, it's either something funny, or something I wanna know. Acronyms feel dry and distant...

On score note, it doesn't matter really, 90% of games are good for me, bad ones are only those where I've done something really stupid. Close games are rare in MWO, snowballing effect is real, it starts usually with first kill, then team follows like bowling pins. Game is designed this way, not sure why anyone should be offended.

I think o7 predates gg. I've seen it used all the way back in mw2 mercs.

Gg is bad manners. Some people only gg when they win and some people gg in your face even if you dont think it was gg. Best way to play is just keep silence i think. You wont annoy anyone and you wont be duplicitous.

I don't really go too much by end game kill results as to whether it was a good game; plenty of times I've won or lost games 12-6 plus or minus 1 where the winning team would have several smoking, almost dead mechs that were able to get back to second line before being finished off. The fresher mechs were able to block the enemy from delivering a killshot to those mechs, but the mechs were effectively out of action unless they wanted to risk getting killed for one more alpha.

Personally I usually just recognize my own team if we do a stomp by typing 'gj' or 'gj all' over the team chat, but if there was a really intense fight and/or we ended up fighting in an unusual spot rather than the normal battle locations on whatever map we're dropping I'll type gg over allchat.

For the most part I'll treat the person as being sincere if the end kill score is higher than 12-4. Below that it's difficult to think that the winning team only has a couple/few combat-effective mechs remaining.

As far as I'm concerned if you post a 'GG' to the 'all' channel after a 1/2/3-12 victory then you are a bad sportsman and deserve to be called out on it.

Gg Threshold

Lol, thought it's another rant thread about how PGI kiled some threshold, whatever that is. I was confused.

For me it's purely subjective, if I feel the game was fair and entertaining, I'll compliment the other team, for example if they fought well and it's somewhat between 11:12 and 7:12.

Or not caring about score at all, if I particularly enjoyed the match, it's still a GG. For example it can be also 3:12, but we had a nice dogfight with other light pack, that's always fun. Or I dished out a lot of damage, and killed a guy with 30% armor left, stuff like that.

The only politeness thing I do is when it was a stomp, but I still enjoyed it due to selfish reasons, I'll type GG or GJ in team chat instead.

You can't judge the quality of a match by the kill score, the snowball effect in this game is strong enough that even a very good match can snowball into a seemingly very lopsided score in the end. You just have to judge based on how the match felt.

Any act of maturity isn't a bad thing... In a game, where no one really know anyone else, a FPS no less, it's not really necessary but, it can't hurt to try to be nice.........

As evidenced by this thread alone, you can't control how someone else is going to react to something you say. Some folks will immediately assume you mean a GG as an insult and flat out refuse to even think that you might in some fashion actually mean "good game" or "thank you for the match". You can't control their thoughts and actions so just don't worry about them.
And those folks who get all bent out of shape at something the enemy team says can just as easily turn off all chat. I'm guessing a good number of them don't because they want to be salty and/or they want to taunt the other team when they win.

I only really take offense when someone says it in a way that is obviously supposed to be condescending such as "gg ez" or "ggclose" when it was 12-1 or some crap. Those people are effin' jerks.

GG by itself doesn't offend me one lick, even if my team got wiped 0-12. I treat it as a sign of handshake after a match where everyone tried their best. Stuff like GGEZ is deplorable though. IMO, if people are offended by just GG, they need to reexamine their lives.

Yeah, GG and o7 are just good etiquette. That's good sportmanship. I usually don't initiate the gesture, but I'll return it for certain.
Of course rubbing it in with extensions is poor form, however.

I usually throw ggwp into team chat and nothing into global, unless it's something hilarious like a 12-0 win in which case occasionally I'll say ggclose in global to inform the enemy of the sound thrashing they received. If we lose I wish everyone better luck next time - it's perfectly fine to belittle your opponents but making fun of your own team is a bit unfortunate.

My apologies if I find it too long to single out those who have earned my respect upon the field of battle, but feel free to consider yourselves never the intended target of anything else I say.

But yea, even on a 12-0 stomp, there are those who'll stand stalwart and hold the line, and just because their team abandons them or my own team follows my lead, it does not make their actions any less honourable or worthy of my respect.

@ Everyone else who does their utmost to take me out, who defies their opposition at all cost an by any means, who strives towards victory, even if they fail. To those willing to drop time and again against me and mine, alone or alongside companions. You know who you are. This one goes out to you.
