Dare I say it, the lock angle reduction was a good change from PGI and will (maybe) encourage better aim from players. Here are some tips to help you on your transition:

-Reduce your in-game sensitivity. Default settings have the sensitivity dialed all the way up to 1.0! Bring that back to something like .20. That's average for most players including myself.

-Use a mouse with variable DPI. I have several DPI settings for the mechs I use. For ERLL mechs, I have a DPI setting of 400! And a little button to bring it down to 300! For skirmishers, I use 1500. For brawlers, I use 2000. And for lights, I switch between 1500, 2000, and 2300 depending on how I am engaging the enemy. All of these help at far to close ranges.

-Stop using controllers. Even though this game is part shooter, part chess, aim has a lot to do with success. You don't have to take immediate snapshots. Thanks to the chess aspect, you may have some time to line up some accurate shots, but there is such a thing as too long. Controllers fall into this category. You cannot take advantage of arm lock on/off properly, and your twist velocity may be affected negatively depending on your controller sensitivity. Controllers are best used for singleplayer MechWarrior games as singleplayer is more focused on fun rather than competition for multiplayer.

Did you just assume that if I play LRMs I have problems with aiming?

You forgot a piece.....

- Just use direct fire weapons now. If you can keep the reticle in that tiny lock window long enough to aquire a lock, you could have held a full Heavy Large Laser burn on that mech plus some, as lock time takes longer and the lock window is so tiny you can't miss the mech with direct fire if your in the lock window!!!

(in case it wasn't obvious, this is half sarcasm, as I think the lock window change is ridiculous, but that's neither here nor there, and would be a discussion for a different thread.)

Also,
WHAT THE **** DO YOU HAVE AGAINST CONTROLLERS MAN??? I find that **** offensive (not really ^_^, but I'm a pretend for a sec to be really angry at you for sake this post.) I been using a controller to play MWO since day one, since thank to an auto accident that required reconstructive surgery on my right hand, I can't hold my hand in the horizontal plane (such as using a mouse) for very long without it aching bad. That's Five plus years now! Originally I played using a PS3 controller and a foot board, now I play with a PS4 controller, foot board, and keypad..... And I do just fine thank you! You discriminating, hateful, bigoted, anti-controller person!!!!!

^_^

That so-called "better-aim" only applies to those who used missiles on the front line. Those using LRMs from the back were barely affected. THAT is what is causing the current outcry. Instead of encouraging front line missile use, the latest patch discouraged it in favor of back fielders.

Mice are so 20th Century. Trackballs require less mechanical energy from the user.

Psst! A G13 is much much better than a keyboard. Just imagine the possibilities if Logitech released a right-handed version as well.

Also, you're going to have to pry my Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog from my cold dead hands while my lifeless corpse is sitting on an RSEAT RS1 Assetto Corsa Special Edition. Posted Image

Excluding Players bcs a weak weapon they culd use for mediocre return gets badmouthed by Skillplay-Overlords is a bad Business decision!

PS: Of course it does not encourage better aim - it encourages even more to go bigger and backer!

I'd hardly call 13+ sustained DPS a weak weapon with a mediocre return.

Or just use weapons that are far deadlier given equal aim.

It just makes lurms more annoying to use. Its not even a nerf.

Light pilots don't have time to aim. Only time to move and be OP. Max sensitivity means you react and move at such speeds even Flash can't keep up with you. And since most lrms are assaults crawling along at 50kph they can waste the ammo hitting the map because that's less ammo hitting my meat shields err team mates.

There was no need to even nerf LRMs

This whole patch was a complete and utter travesty as far as im concerned

The real issue with LRMs is the reward structure. Indirect LRMs allow players to play in a parasitic manner that doesnt properly reward the players spotting for the indirect LRMs. That's what PGI needed to fix and they still have not fixed it. Spotters/Taggers/Narcers should get ~50% of the match score credit for indirect LRMs, because without them indirect fire wouldnt even be possible.

Instead they unnecessarily nerfed LRMs and inadvertently nerfed other weapons too like ATMs for no good reason. They made artemis totally useless. And they went the wrong direction with ECM by buffing its stealth instead of removing its stealth completely. And for what? Is the game really any better? no its not.

Its a bad patch. I cant condone or defend it. PGI should just hotfix this patch out of existence.

Pfft. amateur, back in the MW4 days I rigged my system up to use one of these as a controller;

Spoiler

Might have to whip it out again for good measure.

OP sadly, you are mistaken..

Lock-on nerfs hurt people who used artemis and LRM-ed from the front. Those that use dedicated second-line LRM boats are not much effected by that particular nerf.

We are however affected by ECM buff, which is now back to being OP..

Also, keep in mind that when you say "Lurmers will have to aim more", that firstly, PGI has on multiple occasions stated that LRMs are geared towards the less skilled part of the population and new players. Them learning to aim being harder means that less players will stay and play the game.

Also, when it comes to "aiming" LRMs.. it's now actually much harder than aiming gauss or some other weapons.. It's kinda like aiming a Heavy large laser now and keeping it on target for the full burn.. you have to keep your cursor on target for 5+ seconds to get a lock.. on a moving target, like a locust..

And on top of that, there's ECM.. and AMS... and radar derp.. and stealth armor..

So what you get is you aim with the precision of a special ops sniper.. for 5 seconds or more.. and you finally get a lock, only to lose it a second later, or have your missiles shot down, or even if you hit.. you spread damage and do very little effective damage.. so you have to do it over and over..

It's frustrating for most people..

If you want people to have to "aim lrms to get a lock" then you don't buff LRM counters.. instead you reward that "good aim" with a tight spread and more effective damage..

Anyone using LRMs from the front with have a TAG with them, if they have any idea what they are doing, so they are largely unaffected by the Artemis lock-time removal or ECM for that matter.

Those who sit behind however, not getting their own locks or unable to maintain one/contribute to gettting one. Those guys are hurt, most of those were the lower-skill players too. At least they won't be able to inflate their match scores as easy while still being 95% with 10 friendly mechs dead and buried :)
