You role play you belong to a clan tribe or innersphere house . Why can you not role play a reason for playing a few days under another banner ? " You are a jade falcon spy that infiltrated house Steiner....... "
See my post above: "And even if I would be willing to play for a different faction, I would have to leave my unit and afterwards pay 10-15 million to join it again."
And while in the role play life my rank in my own faction would increase while being a spy against another faction, I would be on probation two times (i.e. 20 matches!) in the current implementation of MWO.
I would happily be on something like detached duty, e.g. helping an allied Kurita unit fighting against Davion in the name of the FRR.

Just go Merc, and take contracts for the factions. No probations. 10-15 million is a very small price to pay for 2100 MC.

Is your merc contract with either of those factions? You can definitely complete the event as a merc.

No being a Merc works just fine. I've gotten all the rewards so far available. You just need to make sure you have a contract with the factions fighting at that time.

I see this from two perspectives:
First as a former lorehole, there are folks who simply refuse to leave their faction and when you “force” them to do so in order to participate in an event as another faction or worse, a mercenary, they resent that. It makes them simply not play and rather than see your event as some sort of opportunity to gain a reward, but as an insult to the manner in which PGI has encouraged them to play the game (i.e. as a loyalist to a single faction). This feeling of insult is exacerbated by the fact that the loyalist is fully cognizant of the fact that the majority of the playing population (i.e. filthy mercenaries or folks lacking all honor who willingly jump from faction to faction to harvest LP rewards) are able to take advantage of the event and get several times the rewards that they can get, again, all because of the choice they made at PGI’s encouragement to play as a loyalist in their faction play mode vs that of some other play style.
Tangentially related to this outlook, is that these same sort of folks want an event that “means something”. To put it another way: a player playing as a mercenary or one that merely plays with a mercenary outlook is in it for the rewards, and events like this give them plenty. A loyalist however is in it for their faction. Rewards are nice but it is the advancement of the faction that matters. These sorts of folks are looking for a pretense of immersion and some sort of “big” faction specific consequence. As historical examples: think back to the Tukayyid events. Loyalists don’t care what they got for winning. They only care that “they” won. That their faction surrounded terra. Etc. (regardless of the fact that certain merc unit(s) made that victory possible). Events such as the current one do nothing for these folks in terms of encouraging them and their loyalist perspective to engage with the game to a greater degree than they already do. It’s just another evening of play, but it doesn’t “mean” anything to them.
Second) As someone who no longer plays FP, primarily because those I play with either detest the mode for various reasons or simply don’t have the time to play it (no need to get into why I left the mode in the first place), and so don’t bother with decks, or learning the maps, or in any way making an effort to engage with the mode; I gotta tell ya that events like this are just not enough motivator to get such folks interested. Contrary to the loyalist perspective above, these kind of folks need not only rewards, but big rewards, to even consider playing the mode (the MC might do it for some but certainly not a majority that I know). No one likes to lose and the casual players of MWO know fully well that dipping their toes into FP casually is a recipie for a good beat down (the FP warning sign makes that clear). Is 50 MC a pop enough motivator to get such folks to play night after night, of near guaranteed losses, for the length of the event? I suspect not.
There are some good thoughts here. FP is what makes this game unique. its just the 12 v 12 that lore and people looking for the unique large team experience with multiple roles.
Could any loyalist or otherwise just drop and get assigned to a side? without changing? just a thought that ppl could play and just drop ..
The other thought was that ppl should be paid faction for participation not wins, - will lead to less salt
And how about we pay 1 mc for every faction game played that does over 150 match score or 1000 damage?
Thanks Matt for your thoughts

OK Matt. There are some points that hurt units atm. First. You have to change faction every day. You will not make 10 games every day. This means you will not get Loyality points.
Not everybody has time every day. That means. They leave the unit to change when the finished the first part and do the second. Unit gameplay is already affected by a lot of players stped playing MWO. Now they leave the units to farm items faster.
Then the biggest point. It is strange. OK look. in 2 WW an american aircraft carrier bombed pearl Harbour fighting for Japan. Then they attacked Japan fighting for the US. On the 3rd day they sunk US convoy ships to prevent them to reach GB. Then the next day they protected them...Do you get the point? This is something what is possibel in MWO but realy makes NO sense!
Changing faction faster than your underwear is....AHHH WTF!!! No loyality? For what do we fight? Warhorns?
Do you get it now?

The biggest argument or point made was that there was not enough 'Lore' in the game and reasons for fighting over the various planets. Classic battles between 2 sides and the choice for us as players to join one of those sides in battle because of 'Lore reason X'.
Faction Play is going to be a series of events and we will be presented with a choice to pick one side or the other.
This means that 12 times out of 13 you will be asked to pick a side with no relevance to the faction you are currently associated with.
How this actually works behind the scenes as a loyalist is not entirely clear but given all events to date and prior correspondence from PGI you will not be able to create mixed tech teams. ie. You will not be able to take IS mechs and fight as Clan or Clan mechs and fight as IS. By extension, this will also likely mean that you will not be able to retain your current faction particularly in the case of mixing Clan and IS teams. Whether you can retain your current allegiance as an IS player and fight for another IS faction is yet to be known..... or as Clan for another Clan.
So to participate, we should expect to have to change factions.
It is also unclear whether there will be any non-event conflicts that players can engage in though what has been suggested so far is that FP will be 'Event Only'.
With current population in the game overall, it is simply not practical to have more than one event at a time, so again, expect to change factions to participate as these events may range from 1 day in length to multiple weeks.
We can expect some larger events to include more than one faction per side, ie. Tukayyid, which will also most likely be the events that will rage on for multiple weeks.
Given there has been no individual faction territory to control for quite a while now, other than flying the colours of your faction in battle and earning some points, there is very little faction identity to be seen.
It looks like we are about to enter a stage of 'Classic Battletech battles from lore' with Faction Play 5.0.
Maybe not quite the direction many were expecting or hoping for, but something that can be enjoyed either way and we can spin whatever story we want for why we are going to take sides.

Come on, really? You're equating playing a role in an event in a video game to a legal team switching sides while under contract? That's just a level of obtuseness that is rarely seen outside of US politics. It's an event... just enjoy it. Or don't. Nobody is forcing you to play it. They went out of their way to make sure every faction has a couple of days they can play here.
