So I've just had a little read around and I see multiple people talking about "the multiplayer part of MW5" and MWO being "ported to Unreal Engine".

Before this becomes accepted as some sort of truth, did anybody who watched that presentation hear anything said about MW5 having any multiplayer element whatsoever? I'm pretty sure it was quite specifically and clearly stated that MW5 is a single-player-only game.

Maybe my listening ability is pants. Did anybody who listened hear that MW5 would have multiplayer or anything about a plan to port MWO to Unreal? Please chime in and either correct or confirm:

No future multiplayer mech game or port was announced at Mech Con.

Russ said specifically that MW5 mercs was going to be singleplayer only, and developed by a separate team than MWO. It also looks like Brian has been moved over to the MW5 mercs team.

Many people predicted this already. PVE would be MW5 and MWO would be PVP. I think PGI has learned that Mechwarrior / Battletech games are going to stay profitable for a long time, if they play their cards right. So now they've been working on MW5 while MWO has been out. I think it's entirely possible they will work on MWO2 when MW5 is nearing release, in order to make use of the Unreal engine, etc.

The big question for multiplay in MW5 is whether it will support Coop PVE. Imagine playing through an MW5 campaign where your lance mate isn't AI, but actually an online friend of yours. Imagine playing through an MW5 campaign with a group of 2-4 friends, from beginning to end.

It's probably not that hard to do. You don't think people would pay for that? I do.

It doesn't.

Pgi is returning to their shovelware roots, where they could just poop out a game and sell it and forget about it. They probably are excited because MW5:mercs involves significant guaranteed initial income and very little upkeep past launch. To top it all off, they can fund it using the mechpack moneyfarm.

"MWO2" however, would not represent a guaranteed income and would also represent a large undertaking. Pgi already burned by the ball and chain of MWO. NOT GONNA HAPPEN AGAIN.

In a utopian world: MWO would get the engine upgrade to Unreal 4 and be the multiplayer for Mechwarrior 5. A name change to Mechwarrior 5: Online would probably do it. Then we had Mechwarrior 5 Mercenaries and Mechwarrior 5 Online.

Though, I fear PGI isn't willing to port MWO to another engine, which I can understand. But that will make many people ask to have a multiplayer in the "better" Mechwarrior 5, which PGI might be willing to do later down the road if enough people ask. And that means MWO could be abandoned and we maybe can purchase must stuff anew.

lots of ifs and maybes, though. We'll see in 2018.

LOL.
Can you seriously think that a new game, with all that time and work invested, will not have a multiplayer part?

So, what? after doing 2-3 times the campaign and get bored by AI bots, we can uninstall it, and that's it?

Obviously nothing is guaranteed. The success of MW5:Mercs depends on a number of factors, and if they ever do MWO2, its success will depend on a number of factors, including the success of MW5:Mercs. There's nothing even remotely controversial in my post.

Heard?
None

I'm sure they will stay separate for quite some time
Using the funds from MWO means it needs to keep on running

That being said
Ask youreself

If PGI has already ported all mechs for the IS
What is left to port over to include MWO into MW5 if they wanted to

Some maps and some more mech models
It's not like we're having this deep and rich thing in MWO that would be difficult to bring over

We basically have team death match on some maps

Do you really believe PGI is going to torch their F2P game by adding multiplayer?

I mean, they could, the hell if I know. But it's not certain, because at least on the surface it makes absolutely no sense for them to do so.

That's pretty much how single player games go. Except for the really good one that get yearly re-installs, of course.

I fully expect PGI to transition MW:O into MW5:O after they finish the single player game. That UE4 just looks too good to ignore.

Didn't Russ say in a recent town hall that MWO was being prepared for the Unreal Engine? It makes no difference to me, MWO has always run very well for me in Cry Engine.

Stand alone seems to suggest that it's going to be all on your hard drive, or run from places like steam.

Did any of the other games have co-op in them that wasn't PvP ?

Will P.G.I go to the expense of a whole new set of servers just so we can play the new title in lance size groups, when they are running three sets for M.W.O ?

I don't think it's safe to assume that there will be co-op involved until P.G.I state there is. I guess it's for people that actually care enough to want to ask questions about it to find out.

Just for clarification, and please without any speculation, can someone who listened to the announcement confirm for me whether or not they mentioned an engine upgrade for MWO. I would appreciate a simple "yes" or "no" preceding the answer.
