It seems easier to control my K/D ratio than my W/L ratio.

Well yeah if you just last hit mechs or take the kill shot of course.

Does that mean you are actively contributing to wins? Nope.

You can have a massive effect on your WLR. My WLR is on average 2.5+ each season. Granted some GroupQ comes into that of course. Approx 90% of my games are just SoloQ each season either way so not really affecting the numbers massively.

If you are being aggressive and dictating battle - riding heat, shooting literally as often as your mech allows - you will win more often. It's a simple numbers game really.

Of course delve further in and the quality of the damage matters, so not spreading it - focusing CT/Toros that area weak etc etc.

But at the lower tier, honestly, just damage is enough given most players don't even torso twist to 'roll' and 'spread' damage.

Meh I could care less about the tier honestly, oh I did back during the days of The Grand Council, and Astral Dominion Leagues, but these days I have more fun just playing casually.

The worst that happens is every blue moon you get a salty sam.

are you spreading damage all over your mech before dying, or always getting CT cored? whenever you fire, are you able to answer the question "the weakest part of this mech is ___" in your mind before firing? are you able to place the damage onto where you want it to go on the enemy mech? are you able to recognise a stick mech, and leave it alone and engage other targets? are you able to identify sword and board builds, and resist the urge to pull the trigger when they present their shield to you? do you have high kill-to-damage ratio (something in the region of 1 kill per 100-200dmg)?

So much this. A little introspection and analysis goes a LONG way towards improving your combat effectiveness.

I don't really care, either. It's a fun game. But I have been a few days on an empty tier 5 bar, doing great damage (800+ in a Huginn at times) and using consumables. The better my matches are, the more I go backwards on tier bar. I am showing negative result when matches are between 400-650 dmg. Early tier should not be this hard to break. I get later tiers... but what about a small pat on the back for new players? Make tier 3 hard.

It sounds pretty good.

"Better" is often a subjective matter.

The PSR system compares your match performance (as folded into the Match Score) with the performance of your team mates. It is possible that some of your team members were more useful for the team. (nothing personal)

After you get into the game and acquire the right set of game skills, you will find out that Tier 5 is actually quite easy. Posted Image

1. The tempo had noticeably picked up for PSR Tier 4/5 QP games, perhaps due to inactive players returning, finding that they have been "reset" to Tier 5...

They may have returned due to MWO Comp Posted Image

Once the dust settles, these players will either "graduate" (with you!) into Tier 3/2/1 and leave Tier 5 alone.
Or they return to their dormant state, leaving QP alone...

Either way, the QP Tier 5 action should slow down after a few weeks/months...

2. What you are asking about (stuck in Tier 5) is essentially how PSR Tier leveling works, how to make it a "green up arrow" at the end of a match... and there are lots of such threads around on this Forum... here are some quick pointers:

~Are you sure that you are fighting QP in Tier 5? Were you in a Group, and this Group somehow played in other Tiers other than Tier 5 (I think it depends on the Tier of the Group Leader).

~Dealing 800+ damage is very respectful in Tier 5, so perhaps you had Team Damage or even Team Kill? That really knocks your PSR level down.

~Equipping AMS, destroying missiles aimed at your teammates (and not yourself) also nets you Kill Assist upon that enemy dying.

~Doing 6+ Kill Assists really helps your PSR level, the more the better.

~Well placed UAV really helps your PSR level (triggers rewards such as scouting, ECM Counter, etc.)

~In general, your PSR level up/down depends on how well you contribute in your own 12-man Team, and how well you did in the entire 24-man fighting roster (including opponent team!).

~Just yesterday I had 500+ damage game, no kill, 3 assists, and my PSR level was "Equal Sign" meaning no up and no down for PSR. I was shocked. A number of our team members did 600-700 damage and a few kills. Which is high for Tier 5. Definitely returning MWO Comp players returning to play MWO.

Many thanks to Therax for the link as below, which is a great explanation of how PSR works:

I started out playing faction war with trial mech's before playing quick match, I think it helped me learn a lot about the game because I just devastated tier 5 with a Fle like straight up bullying squad+ vs 1 Fle. Try faction war learn from the best.

Also in lower tiers invest in some back armour if you want to play heavy/assault, the amount of team damage you are taking is much higher and it's usually from behind

You are right. I remember seeing some players firing their guns and not caring that they were hitting friendlies.
